Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Nathan Lawler Window of Certainty During semester 1, our staff team have been discussing, planning and refining our school direction. As part of this process we are moving towards creating what is called a Window of Certainty(WOC). The WOC has four frames, which are the vision, values, beliefs and outcomes. These four frames will define the boundaries and directions with which the school community can work together. It is envisaged that when finalised the WOC will be displayed in all our classrooms and offices. On Monday, I met with the Student representative Council who throughout the week have been providing further input around what they value in our learning community. We look forward to collecting further input from the larger student body. We hope to publish our WOC later this term. Just this week, I created a class WOCwith my Year 8 History group. This class I have just picked up for the remainder of the year, so it was our first lesson. As a group we now have a shared understanding of where we are going, what we value in the classroom and what each individual will need to do in order for us to reach our vision. Each student has set individual goals and their focus and drive so far has been very impressive. Global Youth Leadership Conference During the holidays, two of our Year 11 students, Alexander L and Eliana S, attended the Global Youth Leadership Conference in the USA for two weeks. The program started in Washington, with a series of workshops about leadership, diplomacy, and geopolitics inter- spersed with visits to the National Mall, Capitol Hill, the Washington Monument, the White House, and the Holocaust Museum. The second part of the program was in New York at St John's University in Queens. Here they partook in the Global Summit; Eliana was the leader of the South African delegation while Alexander was part of the Organising Committee of the Summit. Both went above and beyond what was expected of those attending the program and should be commended. Along- side education, both made close friends with other students from around the world, hailing from countries such as Nige- ria, Barbados, the United Kingdom, or Argentina. Year 7 Survey Each year we send out a joint school and P&C survey to Year 7 parents. In past years, the survey data has been useful in bringing about changes that have assisted families. In response to previous surveys, we now provide more infor- mation about each student through the Parent Portal, we give all Year 7 parents an opportunity to meet and hear from their childs teachers at the Year 7 Welcome Night and we have tweaked our transition program to ensure all students feel supported in their new setting. We are in the final stages of drafting this year s survey and it will be made available to parents later this month. Year 12 Trial Examination On Monday, our Year 12 students will embark on a two-week examination period. The trial examinations are held each year and are a good opportunity for students to show what they have learnt up to this point. Teachers have been work- ing hard with students, which was evident by the large number of holiday lessons that were held over the recent break. To all our Year 12 students, please remind yourselves that we ALL feel nervous when sitting examinations and there is always more that we could have done when preparing for exams. Just do your best. We are proud of your efforts up to this point. Sydney North Athletics Carnival On Monday we sent out a school team to the Annual Sydney North Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to all the students who competed and special mention goes to: Sean C (Year 7) who placed 1 st in the 12 yrs. boys discuss. Ryan F (Year 8) who placed 2 nd in the 12-14yrs 1500m. Kirsty F (Year 10) who placed 2 nd in the 16yrs 800 and 1500m, Seth S, Sebastian D, Zander J, Adam K who placed 2 nd in the 15yrs boys 4 x 100m relay. Term 3 Week 2 2 August 2019

We hope that the preparation these students have put into their training will place them in a strong position at the NSW CHS Carnival, which is held between 4-6 September. It is particularly pleasing to see Ryan F and Kirsty F (regular SIHS Run Club participants) perform strongly. Just shows that hard work can lead to excellent results. Run Club is held each Tuesday morning between 7:00-7:45am. NSW CHS Cross Country Last Friday we had a group of students travel to Eastern Creek for the NSW Combined High Schools Cross Country. From all reports it was a great day and the weather was very kind to the runners. Many of the results were strong and special mention goes to Kirsty F who placed 19th out of 97 participants. As this event includes students from govern-ment, independent and catholic schools it would be fair to say that Kirsty is the 19

th fastest cross country runner for her

age group in NSW. Congratulations to our athletes - they did SIHS proud!

Congratulations to Gavin H (year 7) who last term competed at two NSW State championship for Speed skating. He placed 3rd overall in his division in both competitions. Due to his hard work and dedication to training he was invited to train in South Korea during the recent school holidays. Part of this opportunity was to train with former and current World Speed skating Champions at an elite level. Training entailed early 5am starts daily and he trained hard for ap-proximately 8 hours per day both on and off the ice. We wish Gavin all the best with his training for the National Championships.

Year 9 Ski Camp On Wednesday next week Year 9 students will attend Ski camp, while they are away they will also visit the War Memori-al in Canberra and Parliament House, before arriving at their accommodation in Berridale, we wish these students well for a safe and enriching experience on the ski slopes. There will be an alternate program for those students staying back at school. Our school-based program involves a number of rich learning experiences including a trip to the NSW Art Gal-lery to view the Archibald prize. Best wishes Nathan Lawler Deputy Principal
