Hello, church. What a summer!
There have been so many wonderful things happen these past two months.
It is hard to believe it’s only been eight weeks. Two weeks at Annual Training for
the Ohio Army National Guard, a week of vacation at Lake Cumberland (KY), four
days at West Ohio Annual Conference in Lakeside OH, three days of training for
Franklin Covey’s Speed of Trust curriculum, and the ongoing day-to-day work of
church and home life.
I’ve been truly blessed and have seen God use me in some really interesting
ways. However, I have also become painfully aware of several things over these
two months. I thought I would share a few with you. As I strive to improve, I need
to be reminded of these things as much as anyone. It’s possible you’ll find a nugget
of truth here for yourself.
First, I need to listen more. The best moments have been unrushed,
focused attention on other people. My wife, my children, church members, my Sol-
diers, my friends. When I’m listening, I see value not only in what is being said,
but in who is saying it. My questions are most helpful when I seek
clarification of intent or meaning, rather than seeing the conversation as a problem
to be solved. This includes listening more to the Lord and finding value in that re-
lationship.
Second, I need to slow down. I’m the type of person who likes a schedule.
I’m not a fan of doing nothing. When I go on vacation, I need something to do—or
I find something to do. That’s not all bad. Doing things can be restful. However,
being busy is not the same as being productive. Just because I’m running around
doing stuff, doesn’t mean that’s the most productive stuff to be doing. Slowing
down and being deliberate in action is far better than simply being busy.
Third, I need to admit I need help. Whether it’s getting through a difficult
situation, tearing down a building, coaching a family through marital strife, or lead-
ing the church—I need to realize that I’m not the expert. While I’ve got skills to
bring to the table, I need to rely on others to help carry out the work if it’s going to
get done. I’m so appreciative of many people who have partnered with me to do
the work of the Kingdom - many of those you will read about in these pages.
Finally, for today at least, I need to talk to people I don’t know. I’m not
afraid to speak my mind or get up in front of a crowd. But, sometimes my focus on
doing leads me to walk right past people— I don’t see them! When I engage the
people around me, I see them. And, in the course of the conversation, I get a
chance to see them as a person—regardless of their walk of life, preferences,
political affiliation, religious views, or ethnic background. They become real—not
a character in a story. Inevitably, I connect with them in some way—a common
like, dislike, experience, or whatever. And, I become real to them. The door is
now open to share all kinds of things—to make a new friend, to learn from their
experience, and to share faith.
So, my friends, where are you on this journey of life? What has God been
showing you lately? It doesn’t mean much if your not doing anything with it.
Humbly yours -
Pastor Rich

Lakeside 2019 was a blast! We saw great things happening with our Jr. and Sr. High Youth. If you missed the Lakeside recap at the 10:30 Service on July 21st, feel free to ask me about it! I was with our Sr. High Youth for the week and was able to spend some time visiting our students during Jr. High Week. The theme this year was “Burn for You” and the students learned that they we are not just people…..we are a plan. Both Jr and Sr High students experienced awesome wor-ship experiences with Pastor Todd as well as with the Lakeside House Band. The Sr. High were blessed to have 321 Improv show up during the evening program. The students received powerful messages from Heather Thompson-Day all week. She painted a picture of what church can be like for the students and gave mes-sages of hope and healing! She was very inspiring.
There are several points that really stuck with me from Heather’s messages and I know they meant a lot to many of the students as well. Heather described what it means to have the heart of the Lion of Judah. (aka Jesus) Having the heart of the Lion of Judah is critical for our church to succeed. To have it means as a church we have each other’s backs. We are a family and to quote Heather “If
Satan wants to get to you……He will have to go thru me first” We are being called to be in an attitude and lifestyle of prayer for one another. We are being called to have each other’s backs when other needs arise as well. It is what families should do—and our church is a family! The second point I took from the week is that we should turn our mess into a message. There are others struggling with the same messes we find ourselves in and if we can share with them how we struggle, they know they are not alone. When we share that we made it thru the struggle, we give
hope. When we share what God has done for us during our struggles, we give them something even greater!
So, What’s Your Story about His Glory? What mess have you been thru that God wants to turn into a message?
Thank you for all of your support! Wayne
- 1 Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an
example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

August Mission Feature
Hello from Long Beach, CA! It’s SUMMER! I am on my AIA Summer assignment (helping run the AIA Ultimate Training Camp) as I write this.
I stepped in as the Interim National Campus Director to help out Steve & AIA Campus ministry.. I love this ministry that led me to Christ when I was a freshman athlete at UD. It was both an honor & exhausting. In April, Steve stepped back into his role.
We held 10 AIA Winter Retreats for athletes. The Indy retreat had 300 athletes from OH, IL, MI, & IN attend. 49 prayed to receive Christ! 127 re-committed their lives to Christ. They even had an impromptu baptism where 20 were baptized in the hotel pool!
AIA Summer Mission trips begin! This is an exciting time when 900 athletes take huge steps of faith to go on trips around the world to use their sport as a platform to share Christ!
AIA Chicago Spring Break trip to Puerto Rico! "Will you tell me about Jesus?" One afternoon during AIA Chicago's spring break trip to Puerto Rico, two of the students were sitting on a bench praying at Inter-American University in the city of Ponce. They were praying for an opportunity to talk to someone about Jesus. And literally as they were praying, they were interrupted by a student walking by asking, "What are you doing here at our university?"
During the week, our 26 students initiated over 200 spiritual conversations, shared the Gospel with over 150 people, and saw nearly 70 people pray to receive Christ with them!
All-in-all it was an incredible week of ministry and growth, both for our AIA staff in Puerto Rico and for the Chicago students who traveled. Thanks for your prayers! -Denise Hammons Athletes in Action (Campus Crusade)

S.C.U.B.A . (Super Cool Undersea Bible Adventure)
The SCUBA (Super Cool Underwater Bible Adventure) Program was a Friday after School program that ran from September to the middle of May. The program consisted of Snacks, Prayers, Music, Activities, Bible Lessons and a closing. 30 different children participated in the program with average weekly attendance in the low to mid 20’s. Our SCUBA leaders for 2018-2019 were: serving snacks—Kay Best / Nedra Macwhinney designing our flyers, art work and helping with activities—Laura Hayford walking with kids, preparing snacks, and helping with activities—Pam Vincent attendance, games, and serving as Liaison with Elementary staff—Teresa Gilden) Bible Lessons, performing skits, leading music—Betsy Raabe / Kelly North chaperones, prayer, and closing—Rick Lamb/Ron Lumm /Perry Wiltsie/Rich Rakay Not only did many of the volunteers donate their time, they also donated the drinks, snacks, supplies and equipment used for the program. These are the people responsible for making the program a success. Please thank them when you have a chance. A special thanks goes out to Bob Hohlbein - Franklin Elementary Principal for allowing our volunteers to meet the kids in the school gym and walk them to Trinity on Fridays after School. Many teachers and parents saw the positive impact that this program had on the lives of the students. There were many special events that occurred during the program. Kids praying for other kids and adults praying out loud for the kids for the first time! There are other stories that can be shared. Ask a volunteer how the program impacted them. We will be doing the Friday after School program for K – 4
th grade again this Fall
starting in Mid-September. If you have a heart for pouring into children and would like to help with the program this year, please contact the office or Perry Wiltsie. God Bless!

Greetings!
We hope everyone is enjoying the summer as much as we are here at Tender Times. The staff has worked very hard providing wonderful learning experiences for the children attending our Summer Session. We have had swimming and water play activities, pet week, and even a visit from a real live cowboy and his horse, just to name a few!
The month of August will be busy here as we prepare for our 2019-2020 Academic year. We are pleased to report we are again full to capacity. This credit goes to the excellent teachers and staff and their dedication to their craft.
We are breaking ground on the new playground addition the second week of August, too. The Tender Times families did an incredible job selling for the fundraiser! This money has been designated distinctly for this playground enhancement. We can’t wait for the new outdoor equipment to arrive!
We are, as always, so thankful to you, the church community, for your continued praise and support of the center.
Have a great rest of the summer! Sincerely, Tender Times Teachers and Staff

New Born Congratulations to….
Dustin and Holly (Urbanick) Looser on the birth of a son, Avery Charles Looser, born April 10, 2019, at St. Rita’s Medical Ctr., Lima, Ohio. Avery weighed 8 lbs. 12 oz. and measured 21 inches long. He joins his big sister Maryn at home. Grandparents: John & Laurie Urbanick, Kirk & Lisa Looser Great Grandparents: Jim & Jeannette Stockwell and Ken & Jeanne Looser.
Loosing those that have been a part of us is never easy. Providing a dinner to the grieving family is something that Trinity can do for our members. Thank you to all who took time out to help with the funeral dinner for Betty Cochensparger.
Besides serving the food we have behind the scenes people who prepare the food, set up the dinning room, and stay for the clean up. Thank you to all who step up and help by sharing those tasks. It takes a team to provide these diners for our church families. -Thanks again, UMW Funeral Coordinators
Putting our best foot forward should be easy for most of us. As we minister to the families here in our own church, we are lucky to have people with such giving hearts among us. Thank you to all who took that step and opened their hearts as we prepared the funeral dinner for Carla Harter. We thank all of those who set up, prepared food, served food, cleaned up and tore down. These things do not get done without your help. Thanks again., UMW Funeral Coordinators
Thank you to everyone who showered us with cards and good wishes for our 50th Anniversary! It was indeed a blessed and memorable occasion. Our church family is an important part of our lives.

Vacation Bible School Up-Date
As we have time to reflect on the success of Vacation Bible School this year, we can’t help but be grateful for all the donations made from the congregation and all the time and help we received from our many volunteers. Vacation Bible School was out of this world from the moment the children walked into our doors.
Terry Nelson and her team of decorators were able to transform our church into it’s very own out of this world space place. Teresa Gilden and her registration team made the transition for parents and group leaders easy and we can’t thank them enough for their extra time in allergy awareness and money counting skills.
The children made daily donations that would go towards the “Summer Breakfast Program” which is hosted by St. Peter Lutheran Church. The children, along with an anonymous donor, were able to raise $760.90 that will go directly towards the Breakfast Program. We were able to worship and learn about God with about 71 children through Vacation Bible School and it was amazing to listen to the children discuss how they can go beyond with hope and kindness and watch as they learn
about God and His word through our amazing crafts and science experiments.
The students had a strong connection of the Word through each activity they participated in through VBS; for example, one of our lessons was about Daniel and the Lions. They learned about this story with Dave Stemen and his brave team of volunteers in the Bible Story time. This message of the pressure Daniel was facing and how he turned to God to help him through continued when the children went to the
Science Experiment activity where Carrie Calvelage and her busy team of volunteers were able to show the children what happens to a bottle when it is put under pressure; the children loved watching the bottle shoot into the air.
Cassie Martin and her wonderful volunteers made sure to discuss this message of faith with the children in crafts as they created bookmarks that they will be able to keep for a lifetime as a constant reminder of their time at VBS and their love of God. It was very obvious that the children’s fa-vorite snack day was also the lion lesson because Pam Vin-cent and her creative volunteers provided the kids with yummy snacks that were actually in the shape of a lion, the kids enjoyed every last bite.
August 2019 Delphos Trinity Newsletter Page 11
Now we can’t forget recreation! Elizabeth Elwer and her active helpers were busy running around and creating the most engaging and cool activities the children loved to participate in, who wouldn’t love to carry a sponge full of water from one side of the yard to the other on a hot day? It was truly a fun way to watch the children connect their message of hope to hoping they would win their relay race.
We cannot forget the crazy, organized chaos of learning our VBS music together. Kathy Stewart and her team did an amazing job of getting the children on their feet and learning our VBS songs and dances. This was an amazing way to see their true passion for the words they were singing and the love of their faith. Vacation Bible School music truly stays with these children for weeks after; I’ve had parents who’ve sent me videos of their children singing and dancing to our VBS music in the back seat of their cars. A huge, huge thank you to all of our Crew Leaders! Thanks to your patience, guidance and support, these children were able to feel comfortable in our Church and truly listen and enjoy worship; you are amazing and patient volunteers and without you VBS would have been chaos; thank you Crew Leaders!! Again, it is obvious, all of this success would not have been possible without our many volunteers.
The family pool party was also brought back this year at the end of VBS week and it was a huge success; everywhere we looked we saw God’s joy. We were able to walk around and connect with the children who worshiped with us and their families. The families enjoyed pizza donated by the Pimpas’ cookies donated by the Klint family, glow sticks donated by the Spears family and so much more, it was so much fun and we can’t wait to do it again next year. We’ve heard parents talk about all the positive things their child/children came home talking about from Vacation Bible School and how they’ve seen the growth and love of God because of their time here with us.
Nicole and I know Vacation Bible School would not have been as successful if it were not for the many volunteers who gave their time and all the donations from congrega-tion. We want to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for everything you did and can’t wait to see what beautiful things we can do next year!
-God Bless, Nicole Tobe & Alicia Koester

Betty Jean Cochensparger, 92, of Delphos, passed away on May 29, 2019, at The Meadows of Delphos.
She was born Oct. 20, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, to Wendell and Irene (Williams) Holmes. She was united in marriage to Jack Cochensparger on Aug. 17, 1945; he preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 2004.
Betty is survived by a son, Jeffrey (Crystal) Cochensparger of Delphos; a daughter, Mary Jo (Richard) Behrns of Delphos; a granddaughter, Emily (Brad) White; and two great-grandchildren, Caden and Alaina White.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah Liggett.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Delphos Jefferson. She was a homemaker and also had worked at the Buckeye Pipe Line in Lima and West Ohio Gas in Delphos. She was a member of The Eastern Star Chapter 26, earning a 50-year pin. She was also very active in the Trinity United Methodist Altar Guild, the Delphos Public Library and volunteered at the Delphos Thrift Shop.
Betty was a wonderful cook; she had a zest for life, was very ornery and always had a joke to tell. She loved cheering people up and making them laugh but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Altar Guild or The Delphos Public Library.

June Jubilee Recap
June Jubilee, what a success! Everyone, pat yourselves on the back. The mission committee can not do it without your help. We thank everyone who helped with this mission fundraiser. There was a bit of doubt as we approached the date but as al-ways the wonderful people at Trinity pulled together to make the night a success.
The community fellowship the night of June Jubilee was such a blessing. We hope that all who helped by preparing food at home and at church, setting up, cutting pies, serving, bussing the dinning room, clean up and tear down feel that it was a worth while project. We know the people receiving the proceeds of the June Jubilee Mis-sion project will be very thankful.
Most of all, the Mission Committee thanks absolutely everyone that helped in any way and we appreciate all prayers that went out for the June Jubilee and its volun-teers. Special Thanks to Jim and Anita Dunlap who chaired the clean up team and Mike and Angie Johnson who oversaw the dinning room.
Look for “hands on” mission projects in the future. Remember, we all have hearts for missions! The final numbers for the 2019 June Jubilee:
Income $3652.00 Costs $1147.88
Profit $2505.12
Thank you again for all of your support and help, -Trinity Mission Committee Sue Barclay, Becky Binkley, Becky Jones, Jan Miller, Robin Stewart, Sue Wilkin
