A teacher is a compass that activates the magnets of curiosity, knowledge, and wisdom in the pupils.

Franklin Park School is gearing up for the holiday season by decking our halls with authentic student work. These displays clearly indicate our students’ high levels of engagement in daily work as well as their growth as learners. It is hard to believe that we are already two and half weeks into our second marking period. The mild weather has been playing tricks on us.
Please be certain to carefully review your child’s marking period one report card which traveled home with them on Monday, December 5th. Should you have any questions regarding how achievement was reported, please contact your child’s teacher directly.
I would like to extend the warmest of wishes to you and your family for a joyous holiday season. Enjoy one another and all the special celebrations that accompany the season.
Bundle up and I look forward to seeing you in 2012!

Stop & Shop A+ Bonus Bucks Program! The Stop and Shop A+ Program is underway!
With A+ Bonus Bucks, points accrue with each purchase when your Stop & Shop Card is used. It even works with purchases made online with Peapod by Stop & Shop. At the end of each
month, these points determine our school's cash total which is automatically credited to an account designated for our school.
Totals are updated each month. To participate, FPS families must register their cards every year.

Take your child to the library and explain how to use library services. Help her find books on topics she’s especially interested in.
Bookmark educational websites for your kids to explore. Find a few sites with educational games your children can play.
Take your children to local historical sites, art museums, and cultural festivals. Try to connect what you see to what they are learning in school.
Show your own curiosity. Let your child see you trying out a new hobby or reading a book on a topic you’re interested in.

From the Desk of Mr. Fico As winter approaches, students are reminded to dress properly for outdoor recess. We will continue to have outdoor recess as long as the temperature is above 35 degrees. The wind chill is considered during blustery days.
Students should come to school prepared. Gloves, scarves, hats and coats should be worn.
Keep in mind that the flu and the common cold are caused by viruses. When it is cold outside, people tend to stay inside and are more likely to spread germs. In fact, children get sick more often in the winter because of it.
Therefore, we encourage students to enjoy the 20 minute outdoor recess session. It’s the healthier option!

Thank you to all of the FPS students for sending postcards our way! It is great to read all of the notes where students use grade level words of the week correctly in context. We look forward to reading many more Principal Postcards! Keep up the good work FPS!

The students at FPS are finding out that the Student Response Systems, or Clickers, are a fun way to learn. The Clicker is a new web‐based technological resource that is available for teachers to get their students engaged in learning. I have had the oppor‐tunity to visit the following classes in the months of October and November to observe Clickers in use: Ms.Harkness, Ms. Laub, Mr. Walczyk, Ms. Walczyk, and Ms. Sempervive. During each of the lessons, there was almost 100% participation by the students. The teacher simply displays a question on the board; the students input their answers through a hand‐held device. The teacher can immediately get the results of how the children answered the questions, including information regarding how many students answered correctly, how many got the wrong answers, or how long it took the class to answer each question. The teacher can then use this data to determine how he/she would plan the next lesson or how many students need more assistance. In today’s classroom, if a teacher can get all stu‐dents to participate and engage in lessons, we are taking one step closer to helping children learn.

Raise a Reader 1 Read in front of your children. 2 Let kids choose their own books
to read for fun. 3 Keep books at home that are
interesting to your kids. 4 Limit the time your children can
use electronics or watch TV. 5 Look for books based on TV
shows or movies your child likes.
FPS School Climate Survey As we begin planning for Franklin Park’s Positive Behavior Support Initiative, we are asking for your input regarding the school climate at FPS. YOUR OPINION COUNTS!
Please take a few minutes to fill out a brief online survey under FPS SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY on the school website.
