After being somewhat disappointed with Ben's last long-player,Way to Normal(although the remastered, reordered and expanded version found on the quasi-release, Stems and Seeds, proved to be a more solid version than the originalrelease), I'mhappy toreport thatLonelyAvenue isawonderful return to form forBenFolds.Lonely Avenue finds Mr. Folds with a new and somewhat unlikelylyricist/collaborator; best-sellingBritish novelistNickHornby, known tomost forhis novel, "High Fidelity" (later adapted into a fine film starring John Cusack andthen breakout-star Jack Black). "High Fidelity," is an unabashed a homage toHornby'sownloveofmusicwrappedinatraditionalromanticcomedy.InHornby,Folds has found a perfect collaborator; one who allows Folds to compositionallystretch out in terms ofmelody and structure; to approach songwriting from newangles and perspectives. Although Folds is a fine lyricist himself, his biggestweakness (if you can call it that) is a tendency to be a bit "on the nose"with hiswords;lightonmetaphorandgenerallyleavinglittleroomforinterpretation."Givememymoneyback,youbitch/Iwantmymoneybackanddon'tforgetmyblackT-shirt,"sayshisappropriatelytitled,"SongfortheDumped," from1997'sWhateverAndEverAmen.In the character-driven, Lonely Avenue (named after a song composed by thelegendary Doc Pomus, one of the many colorful characters illustrated over thecourse of the LP), Hornby succinctly and effectively communicates layers ofsubtletiesandemotion,oftenusingveryfewwords.Manyofthesongs/storieshaveanemotional"zap"attheveryend;alineortwothatsuddenlyshiftseverythingthatpreceded it more sharply into focus. Such is the case in "Claire's Ninth," about ayounggirl'sninthbirthday,ruinedwhenherseparatedparentsreunitethefamilyofthreeforpizzaandicecream.Whilethemajorityofthesongisseenfromtheeyesofthechild,horrifiedbythestagednormalcyandjustwantingthedaytopass,inthefinalsevenwords,weseethedayfromtheparents'point-of-view,andthedaytakesongreatermeaning,servingasasadmemorial toa failedmarriage, "Itused tobeourbirthdaytoo."Or"WorkingDay,"(theonlyoutwardlyautobiographicalsongonthe album), which juxtaposes the daily insecurities of a strugglingworking artistwith the exaggerated arrogance and bravura needed to combat the intenselypowerful,dailyfeelingsofcreativeimpotency.Untilthefinalstanza,italmostcomesoffasacharacterstudyofaschizophrenic,butHornbyquicklybringsitintofocus,

"Hey, hey... It's a working day." It's not surprising that most of the songs carrysimilarlyliteraryqualities.Ontheoutward,thesong"PictureWindow"servesasataleofasickchildandhermothersearchingforoptimismatthedawnofaNewYear.Uponhearingthechorus,onemustwonder,withit'srepeateduseoftheword,"Hope"—awordstillechoingsoresonantlyasaone-wordcampaignslogan—ifit'sanallegoryforthedepressionandangstfacingthenationasthecoldrealitiesofthepost-electionObamaeraset-in,"YouknowwhatHopeis?Hopeisabastard,Hopeisaliar.Acheatandatease."ThemostfamouscharacterprofiledonthealbumisthatofteenageLevi Johnston,the unwillingly (in the song, at least) recruited fiancée of Bristol Palin, in, "LeviJohnston'sBlues."Whilethechorusisintentionallyhilarious,actuallyquotingword-for-wordfromJohnston'sownFacebookpage,"I'mafuckin'Redneck,Ilivetohangoutwiththeboys,playsomehockey,dosomefishin’andkillsomemoose.Iliketoshoot the shit, do some chillin' I guess. You fuckwithme and I’ll kick your ass,"Hornbytreatshimasasympatheticvictimofcircumstance,"AndwhenItrytotellthemI'm18yearsold, theysay 'Levi its too late,you'vegot todoasyou're told.'"The song itself has no less than three melodic hooks; one consisting of thebass/pianomotiffoundintheverse,another—easilythemostmemorable—isinthemelodyofthepre-chorus/bridgeandinterestingly,theweakestofthetriumvirateisfound in the Facebook-quoting chorus itself. The unconventional structure is aperfectexampleofhowworkingoffofsomeoneelse'slyricssheetpushedFoldsintounpredictable territory. The results are always refreshing and reward repeatedlistening.Ben Folds returns tomany of the textures that he experimentedwith onWay toNormalandhisearlierall-syntheticFearofPopinstrumentalone-off,butunlikeWayto Normal which had a tendency to jar the listener with it's synthetics at times,making it seemon-the-whole, less cohesive,LonelyAvenue isunified.Muchof thiscanbeowedtothedelicateandbeautifulstringarrangementsofPaulBuckmaster,which adorn five of the album's 11 tracks. It's not surprising that these stringarrangements also recall Elton John, as it's Buckmaster's string charts that alsograceJohn's"TinyDancer"(oncecoveredbyFolds),aswellascountlessotherhitsofthepastfortyyears.Althoughothermusiciansareemployedattimesthroughoutthealbum,LonelyAvenue(againironically,giventhesharedabovethetitlecredit—something that Elton John's Bernie Taupinwas never awarded) comes off as themostone-man-band-in-the-studioaffairofallofBenFolds'albums.Atthetimeofthiswriting,therearethreebonustracksassociatedwiththereleaseof this album andwhile they are essential for the completionist, their B-side likestatus is deserved. (Two are original songs, while a third is an alternate "pop"arrangementof"PictureWindow."TwocanbefoundoniTuneswhilethestrongestofthethree,"ChristianLife,"isanAmazonexclusivedownload.)

Thosewhoare familiarwith thepreviousworkofNickHornbyknow thathe is atruemusic-junkie;amanwhoseems to regardmusiciansasdivinemessengers. Itremains to be seen whether the Folds/Hornby collaboration will continue pastLonelyAvenue,howeverforthetimebeing,Hornbycansaythatforamoment—withalittlehelpfromafriend—hestoodalongsidehisheroes.
