Living in nuclear families in this frenzied, fast-paced world, we have shifted from the peaceful life it used to be a couple of decades ago. I can still remember the wonderful time spent with our grandparents when our parents had to be out for work. Our extended family, then, had many loving ones to open up and share worries with, do the homework with, go along to play in the park and to return home with, hungrily looking forward to grandmother’s winter cakes and “potato-chops” for the tea time. Regretfully, the contemporary world cannot assure our children the harmony of life we enjoyed.

Despite our successful professional backgrounds, many of us do get caught completely off guard by our children’s changing attitude and alarming behaviour; less monitoring back at home and the ever-growing passion for smartphone only add up to the gradually deteriorating condition of our society.

Ignoring this issue has been gradually resulting in failing IQ levels, zero imagination, reluctance to do written work and of course obesity, to name a few of the adversities.

In our effort to combat the smartphone obsession in our

youngsters we have been sending parents regular reminders to monitor smartphone usage and to limit screen time agewise as recommended by the experts.

It is high time that we must remind ourselves that drivers and domestic help, with due respect to them, cannot surrogate grandparents and smartphones are only smartphones, they have no such app smart enough to fill in for our negligence of our duties to our children.

    Trip to Sweden and Denmark

Flood affected - Flooded with Love Winter Fair

Students, Teachers and Board of Directors of Sunnydale

together extended a helping hand to donate relief to the

flood victims, in October, 2017. Food, water, oral saline

as well as money were donated to the victims from flood

affected areas. The unconditional love and support from

Sunnydale community proves that this institution has

been successful in inculcating the concept of sharing

with the less fortunate ones in all Sunnydalians.

Though it was still a bit chilly out there, Middle Section I

kept up with the annual practice of holding a Winter Fair.

Teachers and students delightfully bought scrumptious

winter cakes and appealing little tidbits from the little stall

    holders all day long.

The Handball teams of U-16 and U-18 made a trip to

Sweden and Denmark to play tournaments in 2017. In

spite of only a pair of victories - one in Sweden and one

in Denmark – the boys say the trip left them a lifetime

of memories. The opening and closing ceremonies and

nerve-racking tournaments with teams from almost every

corner of the world made it an experience for them to

remember. Playing with stronger and more skilled teams,

the boys gathered a lot of confidence which will further

    enhance their performance in future.

The Merchant of Veniceby William Shakespeare

Middle Section 2 put up a brilliant show to bring life into one of Shakespeare’s most popular romantic comedies, ‘The Merchant of Venice’ on the eves of October 9 and 10, 2017 at the National Museum’s main Auditorium.

Performers from classes VI and VII enchanted the audience with their show par excellence. The spectators were taken on a trip to the lanes of Venice in Italy of the 16th century with authentic Shakespearean music, soulful dance routines, ornate costumes and vivid banners. The teamwork of the entire cast and crew drew up lots of accolades for the spectacular show.

Dr. Serajul Islam Choudhury, Professor Emeritus, University of Dhaka, graced the occasion with his eminent presence and delivered an uplifting speech addressed to our students. The Honourable Chairman, Joint Managing Director, Principal, Vice Principals and other dignitaries were also present, along with all teachers, office personnel, parents and students of Class VI and VII.

Success in Model United Nations (MUN)

A small but determined bunch of students of Classes XI and XII has made an amazing progress lately in the much hyped Model United Nations circuit. It all started off at THIMUN 2017 held in International Turkish Hope School that two of our senior students, Rakin Bin Riza and Muksetul Islam achieved the Best Delegate Award in *UNEP and *SOCHUM committees. Auhom Ahrar Al Quazi of Class XII also won the Best Delegate Award in the most competitive and elite committee, better known as the Security Council, grabbing the title of “Best Performer” in the entire conference. Soon after, Farhan Zaman amazed everyone with his performance in ECOFIN, winning his very first award.

Next came *HYDMUN Conference 2017 where Auhom Ahrar Al Quazi once again made us proud with his outstanding delegation in Security Council while Farhan Zaman showed his charisma once more by winning an award in this biggest committee in Bangladesh, consisting of over 130 delegates.

The *SMUN 2017 Conference set the milestone for all the delegates from Sunnydale accomplishing a 100 percent award rate. Muksetul Islam and Ahnaf Nihal

won Outstanding Delegate and Special Mention in *UNHCR while Farhan Zaman and Lamisa Sadaf did the marvellous job of co-delegating in the UN Women Committee and winning a Special Mention. Despite a very tough struggle, Auhom Ahrar Al Quazi also won the Special Mention in the Futuristic Security Council.

Subject Selection Day of Class VIII for Ordinary Level Course

Students of Class VIII and their parents gathered together at the Senior Section on Saturday, January 27, 2018. It was the formal Subject Selection Day for Ordinary Level Course where parents discussed with teachers about their choice of Ordinary Level Course and their children’s capacity to meet the subjects’ demands. This parent-teacher dialogue holds major importance because teachers’ feedback and reflections on their students’ aptitude provide significant notions necessary for decisions regarding the selection of the subjects for Ordinary Level course.

The Principal welcomed the parents and students on their expedition to Ordinary Level Course and enlightened parents on different

issues regarding their children’s pursuit of education.

    Teachers’ Picnic 2018 Literati

    For oft, when on my couch I lieIn vacant or in pensive mood,They flash upon that inward eyeWhich is the bliss of solitude;

In these lines William Wordsworth talked about the

daffodils but for us, the Sunnydale family, the different

memories of the day are what have started to flash upon

our inward eye. This merriment got created at the Annual

Picnic of Sunnydale at Shaira Garden, Naryanganj. Some

300 plus of the Sunnydale family took the day off to spend

some time relaxing in the company of each other.

The so warm and welcoming soup at the arrival left

us ecstatic and the feeling stayed throughout the day

and till the last item that was the barbeque. The later

arrangements of meals, snacks and other various

excitements including the hugely appreciated stage

performance made it a truly UNFORGETTABLE picnic.

The stage show after the lunch left everyone greatly

enthralled and the parodies in between with witty

punch lines sent the Sunnydale family into rapturous

laughter. The Principal announced first, second and two

consolation prizes of which the Senior Section bagged

the first prize stealing the show.

All this enjoyment was made possible due to the relentless

effort of the Junior Section I who organized this picnic

party and left an example for the rest to follow.

The English and Bangla Clubs of the Senior Section held

the Second Annual Language Fest and termed it ‘Literati’

    - bringing challenges to its members and other language

enthusiasts. Held on October 14, 2017, this became

a forum for those who feel that there should be more

beyond the text books and regular routine to celebrate

the two languages. The participants eagerly took part

in different competitions such as English and Bengali

Olympiads, Book Based Quiz and Harry Potter–Percy

Jackson Trivia. Certificates to the outstanding winners

were handed over for encouragement and recognition.

The organisers were volunteers from Class VIII and IX

headed by Orthy Aiyana and Anoosheh Abdullah (Class

IX) as Presidents of Bangla and English Clubs respectively.

This was a great teamwork of the volunteers and the

Presidents who worked day in and day out to make this

    event a brilliant success.
