The Ramazzini Inst itute was founded in 1987
by Professor Cesare Maltoni, as a non-profit
social cooperative. It has over 25,000 mem-
bers and for over 25 years has been batt l ing
cancer and environmental diseases. The mis-
sion of the Ramazzini Inst itute is primary
and secondary prevention in l ine with the
main teaching to come down from the Carpi
doctor, Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714),
father of occupational medicine: “it is better
to prevent than to cure”. The Inst itute works to
hone strategies for monitoring tumors via sci-
entif ic research, promotion of early diagnosis
and circulation of information. Since 2009 the
Ramazzini Inst itute has taken direct responsi-
bi l i ty for running the Cesare Maltoni Cancer
Research Center (CMCRC) which has its head-
quarters in Bentivogl io cast le. The Ramazzini

tro d’eccellenza, indipendente, riconosciuto a
l ivello internazionale, noto per i suoi fonda-
Queste ricerche
to i l principale obiettivo dell’ Istituto Ramazzini

studi e biblioteca in questi ampi spazi costitu-
ricerca scientifica.
Giovanni II Bentivoglio, a member of Bologna’s
ruling elite, commissioned building of the castle
in around 1480 to be used as the family’s do-
mus jucunditatis. The spacious elegant quadran-
gular complex encircles a courtyard lined with
porticoes. The three original wings contain cel-
ebrated frescoes such as the “History of Bread”
sequence from the Ferrara school. Restoration of
the castle to its present state was commissioned
in the late 1800s by the then owner marquis Car-
lo Alberto Pizzardi and carried out by architect
Alfonso Rubbiani. Pizzardi later bequeathed the
castle to the hospitals of Bologna. Since 1970,
it has been home to the Ramazzini Institute’s
Center for Cancer Research. The collocation of
high-tech laboratories, archives, offices and li-
brary contained in the spacious castle represent
a superb union of Renaissance and modern sci-
ence. Some of the noble rooms are made avail-
able to public administrations and companies for
corporate events, and the proceeds are donated
entirely to scientific research.

In July 1971, Cesare Maltoni began a major
experimental bioassay on the carcinogeni-
city of vinyl chloride (VCM), a compound used
principal ly in the production of plast ic poly-
mers (PVC). In August 1972, the f irst cases
of l iver angiosarcoma were observed in labo-
ratory condit ions and the results were pub-
l ished in Apri l 1973. A few months later, the
f irst case of l iver angiosarcoma was reported
in a worker at a PVC factory in the United
States. The results of these studies proved for
the f irst t ime that long-term carcinogenicity
bioassays can predict oncogenic hazards for
humans. Over the course of the decade the
carcinogenicity of other industr ial mega-com-
pounds used in the production of plast ics was
also experimental ly demonstrated. The results
provided a scientif ic basis for revis ion of in-
ternational regulations governing the pre-
sence of these agents in the environment.
Questi r isultat i
studi precedenti.
In 1975 a comprehensive experimental re-
search program on benzene and other aro-
matic constituents present in fuels began.
These studies demonstrated for the f irst t ime
that benzene is a carcinogenic agent induc-
ing mult iple types of malignant tumors in
rodents. These results contr ibuted to reduc-
ing the concentration of benzene used in
fuels and lowering the permissible exposure
levels at work and in the general environ-
ment. In 1986 an addit ional l ine of research
was launched with the aim of studying can-
cer chemoprevention, part icular ly with regard
to breast cancer. The results of experimental
studies on the antiestrogen tamoxifen showed
its eff icacy in chemoprevention of breast can-
cer. These results provide a scientif ic basis for
cl inical tr ials in Italy, in which lower dosages
of the drug should be used than suggested by
previous studies.

I l progetto com-
prende oltre 40 saggi.
Si dimostra per la prima volta che:
> tutt i i carburanti correntemente usati indu-
cono tumori maligni;
> l ’etere meti l-ter-buti l ico (MTBE), un sostitu-
to del piombo nel le benzine, è cancerogeno;
zioni ionizzanti .
During the 1990s, the largest project ever
was designed to evaluate the carcinogenicity
of different types of fuels, gasol ine addit ives
and combustion products. Over 40 long-term
bioassays were completed during the project.
I t was demonstrated for the f irst t ime that:
> al l fuels currently in use induce malignant
tumors;
> methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE), a lead sub-
st itute in gasol ine, is carcinogenic;
> formaldehyde, which is also a combustion
product of “green gasol ine,” is a mult ipotent
carcinogen.
Fol lowing the Chernobyl disaster, a mega-
experiment was init iated to study the carci-
nogenic effects of exposure to low doses of
ionizing radiation.
Cesare Maltoni scompare prematuramente nel
gennaio 2001.
Negl i stessi anni vengono studiati i r ischi can-
tame, un dolcif icante art if ic iale ampiamente
uti l izzato da oltre 30 anni. In seguito vengono
Cesare Maltoni died unexpectedly in January
2001. Dr. Morando Soffr itt i took over as Sci-
entif ic Director and from 2009 Dr. Fiorel la Bel-
poggi is the Director of the Research Center.
In 2001 the perception that electromagnetic
f ields generated by electr ic current and mo-
bi le telephone technologies may represent
a carcinogenic r isk prompted the planning
of a series of experimental studies to evalu-
ate the possible effects of exposure. During
the same period, carcinogenic r isks related
to constituents, addit ives and contaminants
in foods were also evaluated, including soft
drinks, sweeteners and dietary supplements.
In 2005, the f irst results on the carcinogenici-
ty of aspartame, an art if ic ial sweetener widely
used for over thirty years, were presented to
governmental agencies in Europe and the USA
and published in the European Journal of On-
cology. Two studies later publ ished confirmed
the carcinogenicity of aspartame.

2020. Sempre nel 2011, grazie alla testimonianza
dell’Istituto Ramazzini sui rischi cancerogeni corre-
lati all’esposizione all’MTBE, il tribunale di Baltimora
sui campi magnetici a bassa frequenza (50Hz) gene-
rati dalla corrente elettrica e vengono elaborati i dati
sulle radiofrequenze della telefonia mobile. Questi
progetti rappresentano i maggiori e i più integrati
mega-esperimenti mai svolti nel mondo su questi
temi. Nuove linee di ricerca sono programmate per
il futuro. Esse riguardano sostanze presenti nella
dieta dei paesi industrializzati correlate a patologie
neurodegenerative come il Parkinson e l’Alzheimer
ed agenti che interferiscono con gli ormoni.
On the basis of the CMCRC’s results, in 2011 the
European Commission asked the European Food
Safety Authority (EFSA) for an urgent re-evalua-
tion of the safety of artificial sweeteners, includ-
ing aspartame, to be completed by 2012 instead
of 2020 as scheduled. In the same year thanks to
the Ramazzini Institute’s deposition on carcino-
genic risks related to exposure to MTBE, Exxon
Mobil is ordered by the court to pay compensation
in the order of billions of dollars to Jacksonville’s
citizens in Baltimore County, Maryland (USA). In
2010 and 2011 the first results of experimental
projects on low frequency (50Hz) magnetic fields
generated by electric current are published and
data on RFEMF are elaborated. These projects
currently represent the largest and most compre-
hensive mega-experiments on this subject in the
world. New research programs are planned for
the future. They concern products used in the diet
of industrialized countries related to neurodegen-

diagnosi. Per far fronte a questo importante
problema, l’ Istituto Ramazzini mette a dispo-
For our country, l ike any industr ia l ized na-
t ion, work-re lated tumors are a grave publ ic
health issue. They are hard to detect for var i -
ous reasons: a long latency between the start
of the exposure and onset of the disease (on
average about 20 years latency but i t may
take even 50 years and more, as in the case
of asbestos) , the mult i - factor ia l nature of
some tumor aet io logies ( for example, smok-
ing and exposure to certa in carc inogens) , the
frequent lack of any detai led profess ional
anamnesis by the doctor at the moment of
diagnosis . To tackle this s izable problem, the
Ramazzini Inst i tute has provided workers and
fami l ies with a consultancy serv ice to assess
the l ike l ihood of corre lat ion between pathol-

sperimentale sulle onde elettromagnetiche a bassissima
Tali composti vengono
indicati come endocrine disruptive chemicals (EDCs).
nanotecnologie applicate all’alimentazione, gli OGM,
delle Twin-Towers a New York.
2010 > Publication of preliminary results of the experi-
mental study on very low frequency (50Hz) electromag-
netic fields combined with gamma radiation, which
point to an increase in malignant mammary tumors.

alternative sweetener to aspartame, sucralose, which
show an increase in leukemia among the male mice
treated. This same year results are being made public
from a mega-experiment on low-dose ionizing radia-
tion, where an increase of tumors of different sites is
observed also at low doses. Ten years on from Cesare
Maltoni untimely death, the Ramazzini Institute re-
members his teaching as a pillar of modern oncology.
2012 > a new field of interest is represented by low
doses of chemicals spreading in the environment and

particular, artificial sweeteners and natural alterna-
tive ones, nanofood, GMOs, mixtures of low doses of
multiple contaminants to which humans are daily ex-
posed. Mechanistic study of the process which leads
to various environmental diseases is performed us-
ing the extraordinary archive of tissues accumulated
over years of research at the Center. The Twin-Towers
dusts from the September 11th 2001 terroristic di-
saster are being studied and results as to their carci-
nogenicity are due to be published.
2014 > Final results of mega-experiments which
have employed sizable resources from the Ramazzini
Institute (RI) for many years are now published: low
doses ionizing radiation and extremely low frequency
electromagnetic fields. Final results of the sucralose
study have been published, as far as concerns the
