(ASL), Hyderabad and Dr. Dinesh Amalnerkar, Executive Director, Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (CMET), Pune, INDIA. Dr. Prahlada, Vice Chancellor, DIAT (DU), presided over the function. Mrs. Tessy Thomas an IAT, Pune Alumni, associated with Agni Program talked about the inception and design stages and development strategies long range missile systems which are used in all Agni missiles. In her work spanning 24 years, she has contributed in various fields such as Guidance, Control, Inertial Navigation, Trajectory Simulation and Mission Design. She gave an inspirational talk regarding the upliftment of women by providing them with proper education and freedom to express their creativity. Dr. Dinesh Amlnelkar gave a educative and eye opening talk on development of science emphasizing on women empowerment and overall enhancing the quality of research programs. On 18th March the second phase of celebration took place. The whole program was materialized by DIAT and the student cultural community “KRIYA”. The theme of the program was to stage variety of events to celebrate womanhood keeping the spirit of inspiring change. There were varieties of events like antakshari, creative writing, hair-styling. In the valedictory programme Smt. Sindhutai Sapkal was the chief guest for this event. She gave an unforgettable speech about her struggle, inspirations and the way she handled all hurdles of her life to channel her miseries to form and NGO adopting homeless children and giving them a healthy future changing the course of their life. Indeed, she became the mother of thousand such lives and aptly is called “Tai” (mother).

Mrs. Indra Prahlada Felicitating to Smt. Sindhutai Sapkal Organizer with the Chief Guest

Her speech spread a highly motivational vibe across the auditorium which was concluded with a well deserved standing ovation for such an inspiring personality. Even though DIAT (DU) put up donation box for collecting funds towards noble cause, she preferred to collect donation with her own arm directly from the people in her Saari‟s aanchal. This act of humility and informal approach melted down all present there and every one came forward to donate and be a part of her life changing cause. In the „Kalakari‟ event, there were many stalls put up where different organizations demonstrated their craft and art in the form of wire bags, candles and chocolates. Every penny was for a cause. It was this unusual great moment where both the customers and the suppliers were fully satisfied as they knew their little act will help in change a life. They depicted the real meaning of conquering harsh challenges of life. The candles were brought by the organization called “SUNRISE”, which is headed by a visually challenged person Bhavesh Bhatiya and as the name says they were giving a ray of hope to everyone at DIAT. The NGO named „Prerna‟, a yet another inspirational cause- cerebral palsy where present with their colorful wirebags. There was an art exhibition named „Darshan‟, which introduced us to various artistic expressions of many with their photography, sketches and paintings. The cultural programme organized by “Kriya”, the DIAT cultural team. The entire program was coordinated by Aditi Bhatt, Goraknath Chaubey and Rajesh Gangwar. Mrs. Indra Prahlada was the mentor and Dr. Sangeeta Kale, Dr. Kavita Pal, Dr. Bharathi Nuthakki, Dr. Dipti Vidyarthi, Dr. Upasana Singh supported the programme. It was a most relevant and complete way of celebrating womanhood. All the students, teaching, non-teaching stuff came together to make this event a successful one and created memories to cherish forever.

ADVANCED TRAINING ON FEA USING ABAQUS

Department of Mechanical Engineering conducted an advanced training programme on ABAQUS for M.Tech/PhD students and faculty members of Institute during 3rd -7th February 2014. Various aspects of FEA such as contact analysis, dynamic analysis, impact analysis on composite structures etc., have been delivered. The Abaqus FEA software offers powerful and complete solutions for both routine and sophisticated real life engineering problems covering a vast spectrum of industrial and defense applications.

Engineers, Scientists and Academicians are able to consider full structural loads, dynamic vibration, multi-body systems, impact/crash, nonlinear static, thermal coupling, and acoustic-structural coupling using a common model data structure and integrated solver technology. Best-in-class companies and research groups are taking advantage of Abaqus FEA to consolidate their processes and tools, reduce costs and

inefficiencies, and gain a competitive advantage. Mr. Sunil Nimje, Assistant Professor has coordinated

the programme.

AWARD FOR PORTABLE MULTIPLE DISEASE DETECTION KIT

The team JANCH has contested in the Asia‟s biggest Business plan competition, Eureka-2013, organised by IIT Bombay. The team has won Technology and sustainable development award with a cash prize of Rs 3 lakhs in the competition.

Naresh Kumar, team member of JANCH with

the cash award

Mr. Naresh Kumar is pursuing Ph.D in the Department of Applied Physics, DIAT(DU), Pune, under the guidance of Dr. Tejashree Bhave. Assistant Professor. Dr. Prahlada, Vice Chancellor congratulated him. The team JANCH proposes a portable multiple disease detection kit. The kit developed using microfluidics technique, consists of four VBD paper strips housed in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer embedded with microchannels to transport and distribute blood sample to disease detection strips. The kit detects potential infectious diseases with 98% accuracy in 5-10 minutes only.

The Kit comes with features like bio-compatibility, compactness longer shelf life and minimal usage of body fluids (one drop only). It will be the for the first time in India that a product based on point of care diagnosis, detect the infectious disease among all sets of probable VBDs. Different variants of the product based on demographic variables in VBDs are designed to reach out whole Indian market.

The JANCH portable multiple disease detection kit

The components of the Kit, PDMS template with microchannels and

nitrocellulose based disease detection paper strips

FUNCTIONS OF THE KIT

The disease detection kit (ref Fig 1) consists of fine micro channels of the order 400-500μm, these channels direct the blood towards the main assay detection unit.

Blood and buffer solution is pumped inside these channels using a typical dropper and lancet available in the market. Though lancets are now a days replaced by syringe for pricking as a practice. But we recommend lancets in inexperienced hands.

The blood and buffer is pumped inside these channels, the blood wets the absorption pads in the nitrocellulose disease detection kit as a result of which the Antigen-Antibody reaction takes place and the line markers shows positive or negative.

Once the test is over, the kit can be opened and the strips can be replaced with new strips while retaining the template.
