Inauguration of the Colegio Diospi Suyana – Three Hours of creative Celebration

Three year old Areli Luz put a coin in her mouth and swallowed it. Unfortunately the coin got lodged in her upper esophagus. Eight long days passed before her parents brought her to the hospital, where it took many fruitless attempts before the doctors were finally able to dislodge the coin using a balloon catheter.

Some people may think that sounds a bit dated but for us it‘s the foundation of everything we do. It is our desire to honour God and to do his will – nothing more and nothing less. Yours, Martina and Klaus-Dieter John

Good Friday eve-ning: Leonarda Sicaya* is out for a walk with her mother. Suddenly her partner jumps out at her from be-hind a bush, bran-dishing a long kni-fe. Like someone possessed he stabs

his girlfriend over and over, the blade pier-cing her face, neck and chest. Miraculously, the woman survives and it was the begin-ning of a long night in surgery for surgeon Dr. Reinhard Kühn and his team. *name changed.

Alcohol and Animism

Together with 750 de-lighted guests Diospi Suyana celebrated the inauguration of the school on March 14 with a three hour pro-gram to include a co-lourful variety of spee-ches and song. The Minister of Education honored the infra-structure and educa-tional approach as the way forward for the fe-deral state of Apurimac. In his speech, Principal Christian Bigalke set the

school in the context of its Peruvian past, in which some sec-tions of society have been disadvantaged for centuries. Before him, Drs John had expressed their desire that the students would learn more than just chemistry, physics and math,

for faith is the only perspective that tran-scends death.

Hat trick in Sterilisation Unit

Bringing the good news to chi ldren in Puc apuc a at 11,000 feet.

When a player scores three goals in one match, experts talk of a hat trick and this is what happened - twice – in our sterilisation unit. The Lautenschläger Co. donated a sterili-sation unit to the hospital on three occasions. And on three occasions technician Reinhard Berger helped train our techniciansin Germany and Peru.

The morning service begins at the hospital. As the first line of the song “Vine a alabar a Dios“ (I came to praise God) appears on the screen, all of

the patients suddenly stand to their feet without anyone having asked them to. There is an atmos-phere of awe and solemnity. Even many atheists know the feeling of trascendancy – the sense of a higher power. Is it maybe right, what it says in our Bibles, that God has placed eternity in our hearts?

▲ In the presence of God

New Zealanders Janet and Geoff Benge have written lots of exciting youth literature. Their most recent work is ba-sed on the biography of Klaus-Dieter John and his life with his wife Martina. Over the past two years the Benges have been in close email and phone contact with the Johns

and even visited them in Peru. The result is an En-glish book, available from our German office or on Amazon in E-book format.

▲ Simon and Belén Giesbrecht with their children Araceli and Leonie

With Udo Klemenz and Johannes Bahr at the helm the most important remaining jobs will be done by the end of June. 178 students, including 19 missionary kids, have been attending the school since March 17. Amazingly, the builders and the children are not in one another´s way Mine owner Guido del Castillo donated 1,200 sacks of cement to complete the Kindergarten. Master carpenter Burkhard Jochum came for four weeks to make the furniture and the Schneider Carpentry Co. in Waldstetten donated 15 large cupboards.

Changing of the Guard

Hope in the Land of the Incas

We are pleased to wel-come the Giesbrecht family. Simon Giesb-recht is already serving as technical assistant in our operating theaters. His wife Belén advises patients in matters of nutrition. Tommy and Jessica Toews are returning to their home in Paragu-ay as planned after ex-emplary service in the workshop and nursing.
