Students graduate from the new Community Paramedic Program The new Community Paramedic training program, which began at HTC in May 2011, has already been a success, graduating over 100 students.

The course, which combines 64 hours of classroom instruction, 48 hours of online training and 196 hours of a clinical rotation, can be accessed by students from all over the country via Interactive TV (ITV) technologies. Currently, students who have enrolled in the program have attended HTC from North Dakota, Washington, Missouri, New Jersey, Maine, Idaho and even Canada.

After they graduate, students will have a key role in local communities as they create new strategies to provide critical health care to rural and under served populations. Locally, ten graduates from the program are working for North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. page 27

IPC Soldering certificationRegister now for the IPC Soldering Fall 2013 class. This 64-hour program consists of schematic reading and hands-on soldering skill development. At the end of the program, you will have the opportunity to earn the IPC J-Std Certification.

Someone possessing the IPC J-Std Certification can work as an electronic, mechanical and medical assembler for employers in the following industries: telecommunication, electronics, energy, manufacturing (medical device, defense, aerospace), and HVAC to name a few. page 39

Retooled M-Powered Program!The M-Powered program is completing a 3-year grant, in September 2013, funded by the US-DOL. The program enrolled 389 students. M-Powered has 9 years of success and will continue in the fall 2013 semester.

There are two CNC options: Full-Time and Part-Time. In the full-time option, students will have the opportunity to earn 18 credits and industry credentials, during the fall semester. In the part-time option, students will also earn 18 credits and industry credentials but over 3 semesters. This option is 2 nights per week, making balancing life more achievable and is perfect for those students who are employed.

Besides the technical education and training, M-Powered includes wrap-around services. These services include soft skills such as resume writing, interviewing, leadership and job retention skills. These critical skills are becoming more important to employers. Each student will have an employment counselor, someone to help overcome employment and educational barriers through counseling and identifying available community resources. Pilot/Escort Certification updateHennepin Technical College has offered the new pilot/escort driver certification training since spring 2012.

Currently, this is a Minnesota-specific course, although anyone escorting an oversize load into Minnesota from another state or Canada will have to be certified. To date, 71 students have taken the course successfully.

Pilot/escort drivers that want to continue to do business in Minnesota must become trained and certified by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety by January 2, 2014.

Peace officers performing pilot/escort duties will now also be required to have pilot/escort training. page 46

“I have come to teaching after six years working as a journalist for Minnesota Public Radio, rst writing and producing for a show called The Writer’s Almanac, and then for a show called Speaking of Faith. I also reported a series of stories for a show called Weekend America, which also ran on Public radio.”

”As an English instructor, I focus on writing as both a means of communication and critical thinking. I believe that learning to write clearly, coherently, and compellingly is hard work, but I try to balance that hard work by making the writing assignments fun.”

Would you like to improve your understanding and interaction with culturally diverse people? This two-part, six-hour, workshop fi rst gives you a reliable assessment of your own cultural competence and then presents a framework for you to improve your social interaction with those from different cultures.

The Midwest Cultural Exchange:Intercultural Communication andAmerican Values Midwest Cultural Exchange (MCE), is a unique cultural education program designed for guests to the United States to enhance their cultural understanding of the U.S. and broaden their knowledge of intercultural communication. In the workshops, the participants will learn about the challenges of living in a new culture and communicating across cultures, discuss real-life scenarios and share their own experiences. Participants will discuss cultural values, especially American values, and have an opportunity to share information.

TESOL – Seminar for Teaching English as a Second LanguageIn this course on teaching English, you will focus on a different topic related to the Teaching of English as a Second Language on each Saturday. These include: Materials, Methods, Teaching Grammar and Teaching Pronunciation and Practicum. This course is designed for international guests who will become English teachers in their home countries, for those who would like a sampler of the fi eld, or for tutors who would like to improve their knowledge and skill. The seminar includes 4-hours of preparation for a practicum experience. In addition to non-credit hour based (CEUs) courses, HTC offers credit based ESOL courses. The ESOL program is designed to lead students to the college level in reading skills and the diploma level in writing skills through participation in semester long courses. $288 Billion

Based on the Twin Cities metro economy of $190.7 billion, this means that for every $1,000 produced in the Twin Cities metro area, $15 are directly or indirectly related to Hennepin Tech. The direct impact of the college in 2011 was $169 million, while the indirect impact in other industries was $119 million.

Similarly, during 2011 the college and its students generated an estimated 2816 jobs in the Twin Cities. These jobs included an estimated 1,984 direct jobs and 832 additional indirect jobs created by vendors, contractors, and businesses supplying inputs to the college and its students.

The study was conducted by Wilder Research, a nationally recognized source of data used by state and local planners, policy makers, and service providers.

The Wilder analysis, which was prepared for the Minnesota State Colleges and University system, explains that HTC impacts the local economy in three ways:• Direct spending by the college

itself, including funds spent for construction projects, wages and salaries, contracted services, and supplies and repairs.

• Spending by students, many of whom are residents of the area.

• Labor markets impact, including the employment of local residents, job creation as a result of college, student spending, students working part-time while going to school, and students staying in the local area after completing their studies.

Jose Diaz, research scientist for Wilder, said, “This economic impact research provides a statistically valid measurement of the signifi cance of an organization’s activities on the regional economy. Policy makers and community leaders can use the data to inform their decisions. Hennepin Technical College clearly has a signifi cant impact on the regional economy.”

The study also concluded that Hennepin Technical College generates approximately $17 million in tax revenue for state and local government.

The study further estimated the value of the increase in productivity that 663 associate degrees were awarded by Hennepin Technical College in 2011 will yield throughout the careers of the graduates.

Assuming a 40-year work life, the education received by these graduates will yield additional state income of $62.1 million. “Hennepin Technical College makes a long-term contribution to the regional economy with every graduating class because the productivity improvement from higher education lasts for the worker’s entire career” said Diaz.

On a statewide level, the Wilder study shows the seven state universities and 24 community and technical colleges that are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System:• Generate an annual economic

impact of $8.3 billion (direct impact of $5 billion and indirect impact in other industries of $3.3 billion).

• Represent a return of $13.53 for each $1 of state appropriation.

• Generate an estimated 80,856 jobs in the state (56,876 direct jobs and 23,979 additional indirect jobs created by vendors, contractors and businesses supplying inputs to our colleges and universities and their students).

• Generate approximately $490 million in tax revenues for Minnesota state and local governments.

In addition to the impact outlined above, the enhanced productivity of MnSCU graduates across the state is equivalent to $4.7 billion of future value created each year.

Study released estimates the economic impact that Hennepin Technical College has on the regional economy to be $288 million per year.

Phlebotomy TechnicianThis 148-hour class is intended for those who have no experience and want to become employed as a Phlebotomy Technician in a clinical laboratory, medical clinic or public health department setting. The course includes 48 hours of classroom training and a 100-hour arranged clinical externship to provide you with a complete learning experience.

Topics covered are phlebotomy equipment and procedures, blood collection by venipuncture and capillary punctures, basic anatomy as it relates to blood collection, safety procedures and professional ethics and liability. 14.8 CEU

Please read: You must take the Phlebotomy pre-test to register for the class. Call the testing center at 952-995-1547 to schedule the pre-test. You must have proof of immunization and a current mantoux test is required. Proof of Hepatitis B immunization is required to begin the course. Community Paramedic

New career path for paramedicsHennepin Technical College (HTC) is the only college to offer Community Paramedic training as an academic Certifi cate program®. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton signed into law the Community Paramedics Bill creating a new certifi cation for emergency medical technicians – Emergency Medical Technicians-Community Paramedic (EMT-CP). The fi rst program began in May 2011 at HTC’s Eden Prairie campus, and will expand access to health care in under served communities.

Community paramedics will provide health services where access to physicians, clinics, or hospitals is diffi cult. Rural Minnesota, with its large population of elderly citizens and a critical shortage of health care professionals, will be one place where community paramedics can help the most.

Community paramedics are also trained to monitor and provide certain treatment to patients with chronic diseases and perform minor medical procedures in the patients’ home. For example, when responding to emergencies involving autistic patients, treating minor injuries in the patient’s home eliminates the added stress of transporting them to the emergency room.

Experienced paramedics who enroll in the program will complete 64 hours of classroom and 48 hours of online training at HTC’s Eden Prairie campus, as well as 196 hours of clinical training at various Twin Cities hospitals, earning 12 college credits.

Who Should Attend?This course is designed to teach the student about the joint Wellness-Fitness Initiative established by the International Association of Firefi ghters and the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the CPAT test. This initiative lead to the development of an evaluation tool called the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Upon successful completion of the eight-event program, the student will receive a one year certifi cate of CPAT completion.

RequirementsThe requirements of the Candidate Physical Ability Test pre-test program include the following:

1. All candidates have the opportunity to attend at least two orientation sessions within eight weeks of taking the CPAT test.

2. Each candidate is provided with an opportunity to perform two timed practice runs within 30 days prior to the CPAT test.

Food brings people together. And when those people are instructors from the Hennepin Technical College culinary arts program and food scientists who are product developers at General Mills, it leads to an energizing exchange of knowledge about food.

This blending of food science and culinary arts began in 2011, when General Mills sought an opportunity for its food scientists to gain hands-on cooking experience that would enhance the development process. Now the scientists spend time in the Hennepin Technical College kitchens as they chop, sauté, stir, bake, and taste their way through a variety of recipes with HTC instructor Dave Eisenreich, who has taught at HTC since 1998.

General Mills Food Scientists get a Taste of Culinary Arts at Hennepin Technical College

“Building the scientists’ culinary skills improves the quality of our products,” says Jonathan Griebel, senior scientist at General Mills. He notes that the classes have helped product developers refi ne their defi nitions of the tastes they want to produce. “Instead of telling their supplier they want onion fl avor, they now might specify sautéed onions,” explains Griebel.

As for class content, Eisenreich worked with Griebel and HTC’s Suzanne Ciebiera, training and development director of Customized Training Services, to develop a program that would fi t the needs of the food scientists. Currently, there are four courses: 101 focuses on fundamentals such as knife skills and basic cooking technique; 201 builds on those skills and advances to work on building meals and fl avors; 301 explores the culinary fundamentals of Mexican and Italian cuisines; and 401 is devoted to the fundamentals of baking, highlighted by artisan breads, cakes, cookies, and pies. With classes of just 12 to 15 individuals, there’s plenty of time to discuss what the students are learning.

Dave Eisenreich has 33 years hospitality experience as cook, sous chef, and chef. He continues his industry involvement as an on-call chef for two caterers and as personal chef. During his 10 years at HTC, Dave has taught many courses, among which are baking, decorative works, global cuisine, fundamentals of wine, cooking with ale and lager, bar and beverage, and human relations management.

Representing Hennepin Technical College, Dave was nominated for Award of Excellence in 2006 and Chef of the Year 2008 by the American Culinary Federation, Minneapolis Chapter. Personal interests include international travel, bicycling and catering.

“Our relationship is particularly rewarding for me because those attending the sessions bring a wealth of knowledge about the food industry,” says Eisenreich.

“Aside from that, they are just great people.”

“I love working with chefs,” says Griebel, describing what he enjoys about the classes at HTC. Prior to completing his training in food science and joining the research and development team at General Mills, Griebel was a chef. For him, blending food science with culinary arts makes for a great combination, especially with classes that provide product developers with fresh ideas about meeting consumers’ expectations.

“As people watch cooking shows and travel shows, they’re becoming interested in a wider variety of fl avors,” observes Griebel. To meet the challenge, General Mills provides food scientists with continuing education that keeps them inspired.

With classes that bring together people from General Mills’ research and development team and HTC’s culinary arts program, one thing is clear: It’s all about good food.

It’s not everyday a father and son attend a college course together, and both get certifi ed in the same fi eld. But that’s just what happened to Jeff Leuthardt and his son, Shenray Leuthardt, when they both attended the fi ve-week IPC J-STD soldering certifi cation course at Hennepin Technical College, through Customized Training Services.

“I found out about the program at a Job Fair, and told my son about it because he was planning to attend HTC for Automation Robotics” recalls Jeff, who had no previous experience with soldering. With a background in prepress printing, graphic and web design, Jeff was between jobs and looking to add a new skill to his resume.

Jeff’s son, Shenray Leuthardt, was attending Waconia High School at the time, and enjoyed participating in the schools Robotics’ Club. Last spring, at the advice and encouragement of his

Dad, they both began the fi ve-week program together, as Shenray was fi nishing up his fi nal weeks before graduating from high school.

Asked whether there were any special advantages to attending the course at the same time, both father and son confi rmed that assisting each other with homework, specifi cally the math, was benefi cial.

Shenray used his soldering skills immediately, while he was still in the Robotics’ Club at Waconia High School, re-assembling older parts into new confi gurations for competitions. “They have a lot of old parts, and no one else could do it.” He also knows that soldering will be a benefi t when he enters the HTC Automation Robotics program this fall.

Jeff pointed out that although he’ll continue to look for a full time print and design position, he feels that with this new skill on his resume, it opens up the types of businesses he can work with.

“Employers want you to understand their business, even if the position you apply for is different, they still want you to understand the industry.” He also noted that employers like to see that you have been engaged in learning, even between jobs.

Damodar Ramanuj, the IPC soldering instructor, has seen other families participate in this course together. Last year there was another father/son pair, and this spring, there was even a sister/brother enrolled at the same time.

“It works to their advantage” says Ramanuj of the families, “they feed off each other’s knowledge and training because they are learning the same things. This is a family school” he grins, “just like Olive Garden – when you’re here, you’re family.”

In the classroom, each student has access to a soldering station, a soldering iron, solder, magnifying lens and wire stripper. Students get hands-on experience identifying components, learning and practicing industry standards and understanding schematics. At the end of the 5 weeks, they can take a test to become certifi ed.

“I was talking to Joe (Fredkove), about the IPC Soldering course for my son, and I thought I should probably go myself.”

“There was a point where we were both going over the math and I walked him (Jeff ) through it and showed him a shortcut,” recalls Shenray with a smile. “My dad also reminded me about homework that needed to be done.”

When asked what a student needs to be successful in this course, Ramanuj explains, “ You have to be hungry for knowledge. Be curious and ask a lot of questions. You go to bed smart, and you wake up dumb - that’s how fast electronics is changing”.

For Jeff and his son Shenray, they would both recommend the course.

“It’s another skill to learn “ says Jeff, “and now you understand another business workfl ow.”

Shenray added, “It’s something I enjoy, it’s useful, and it helps a lot including home use.”

Job seekers possessing the IPC J-Std Certifi cation can work as electronic, mechanical and medical assemblers for employers in the following industries: telecommunication, electronics, energy, manufacturing (medical device, defense, aerospace), and HVAC to name a few.

According to the US-DOL , MN has one of the highest levels of employment and average salary, for soldering, in the US. According to the MN DEED, this occupation is one of the fastest growing, in MN. The estimated percent growth from 2009-2019 is 24.2%. Solderers can expect to start between $11-$14 per hour.

“This course is beyond the regular electronics program,” notes Ramanuj” J-STD is the basic soldering certifi cation – employers know they wouldn’t have to be trained in standards. Their entry level skills are better.”

As far as advice for other families enrolled together, they both said it was a positive experience. Jeff notes, “Be prepared to learn each other’s study habits”, and “try to arrange your time to ride in the same car to save gas.”

This is the only time that Shenray disagrees, “don’t carpool” he grins, “unless you want to listen to MPR.”

HTC Customized Training Set to Launch Manufacturing Project By Matt Leaf, Director of MAAC Program

Manufacturing Assessment and Advancement Centers (MAAC) is a United States Department of Labor funded program being launched by Hennepin Technical College (HTC). This project, totaling nearly $3-million, will span four years.

Over 300 students will have the opportunity to complete the program by earning a diploma (30 credits).

HOW IS THE MAAC ASSESSMENT AND ADVANCEMENT LEARNING PROCESS DIFFERENT? • Experience an “inverted class-

room” by learning online instead of attending lectures in person.

• Practice your new skills on simulators at the nearest MAAC site before going on campus.

• Train on campus during convenient “open lab time” to work on conventional equipment.

• Designed from the ground up with input from premiere employers

• Aimed at compressing the learning cycle for all students interested technical education

MAAC locations will be set up throughout the Twin Cities for convenient access. Sites currently under consideration include Brooklyn Park and Eden Prairie campus, North Minneapolis, and the Wright Technical Center in Buffalo, Minnesota.

Simulators will include virtual reality welders, desktop machining centers, and automated electronics that are used in nearly all manufacturing facilities.

WHAT INDUSTRIES WILL BE INCLUDED?Machining, welding, fl uid power, and automated controls are all hot industries who are desperately searching for employees. We are developing curriculum to meet those demands.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?Veterans are a large focus of this project. They’re returning from active duty and have responsibilities to meet (Mortgages, families to support, cars to pay for, etc.), and often need specialized training to land a high paying job. We want to accommodate them by awarding college credit for the applicable training they’ve received so they don’t start at square one.

Those who have been grant TAA (Trade Adjustment Assistance) status or Dislocated Workers status are also a main focus of this project. We’ve developed this model to be fl exible so that no matter when attending college works best for each individual, we have a solution that matches.

New Rules for 2014 – Are You Ready?This class will cover the most recent rule changes and new requirements. Topics include: commercial vehicle registration, changes in medical card and CDL requirements, texting and cell phone use, and more.

Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA)The purpose of this course is to review how CSA works and how it affects not only industry, but drivers of vehicles weighing 10,000 pounds or more. It includes detailed explanation of quali cation les and in depth training about log books.

Driving with a PlanThis two-hour class is recommended for the CDL and small eet driver. The class is fast-paced and uses video footage from police, commercial vehicle, and traf c cameras to reinforce how to drive with a plan. Pilot/Escort Driver Certification

In 2012, the State of Minnesota passed new laws which mandate operators of vehicles escorting overdimensional loads to hold a current Minnesota Department of Public Safety certifi cation.

All operators will be required to carry this certi cation BY January 2, 2014.

The Department of Public Safety and the State Patrol have tasked Hennepin Technical College and Advanced Minnesota (formerly Mesabi College) to work with other MnSCU institutions to offer the initial eight-hour certifi cation course at various locations around the state.

Classes are available now in both open enrollment and contract options. The cost of the certifi cation is $180 per person.

All students are required to bring a recent driving record – no more than 30 days old.

Motorcycle Safety Basic Rider Course (BRC)Rider Course is designed with the beginner in mind, but is a challenge even to experienced riders. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation(MSF) supplies our curriculum and materials and our instructors are MSF-certifi ed. The course includes both classroom and on-cycle instruction, with high-quality, personalized coaching and several hours of practice riding. We also provide the motorcycle, free of charge! Riders 18 and older can earn their motorcycle license by successfully completing the course. You must bring the required protective gear for on the range skills including: Eye protection, long-sleeved shirt/jacket,

full-fi ngered gloves, long pants with no tears or holes, sturdy footwear that covers the ankles, a D.O.T. approved helmet, parent/guardian signature is required for participants under 18 years of age.

Taxi Cab

Courtesy Cab TrainingA training class for individuals who wish to obtain a license to operate a taxi at the Minneapolis/St Paul Airport, (licensed issued by the Metropolitan Airports Commission - MAC) the City of Minneapolis (license issued by city) and the City of St Paul (license issued by city). Course provides information on taxicab operation and ordinances

from MAC, Minneapolis, and St. Paul. Students will learn safe driving techniques, geography, map reading, and professional behavior. Some homework is required between class sessions and attendance is mandatory at all sessions for successful completion of the course. 2.1 CEU $150, 6 sessions

Motorcycle Safety Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2)PROMOTION FOR THE PREVIOUS STUDENTS OF THE BRC:If you have taken, or will be taking, the Basic Rider Class (BRC) in 2013, you have the opportunity to take the BRC 2 for a promotional price of $25. Please keep in mind, you need 1,000 miles of ride time to take this course.

Whether they’ve been riding for one year or twenty, riders need to keep learning. That’s where the Basic Rider 2 (Experienced Rider Course) comes in. Riders hone their mental strategies to a razor-sharp edge in the classroom, and practice advanced motorcycle handling skills on their own bikes. Certifi ed instructors draw from student knowledge and experience to coach riders to success. Students should have 1,000 miles of riding time on their motorcycles before enrolling in this class. 0.5 CEU$25, 1 session

Civilian Police Motorcycle Course (CPMC)The Civilian Police Motorcycle Course (CPMC) is an advanced, 8-hour course for experienced riders. The course uses the same techniques designed to train and keep police motor offi cers safe, day after day, in any weather and traffi c situation. The course will develop coordinated fi ne-muscle control, balance, skill, and confi dence, particularly in the areas of low-speed clutch, throttle and brake control with proper head, eye, and body position. Students learn to master tight and locked turns in confi ned spaces, as well as slow and 30 mph offset weaves, the intersection (iron cross), 40 mph brake-and-escape, J-turn, and formation riding. Riders must have at least 3 years or 12,000 miles of riding experience to take this course. 0.8 CEU $75, 1 session

A new policy banning the use of tobacco on the Eden Prairie and Brooklyn Park campuses of Hennepin Technical College went into effect July 1.

Under the new policy, smoking, tobacco use and tobacco sales (including the use or sale of smokeless tobacco products and electronic cigarettes) will be prohibited on property the college owns, operates or leases. The policy applies to all students,

faculty, staff, administrators, outside contractors and the general public. Tobacco use will be allowed inside enclosed private vehicles that are parked in the college’s parking lots.

“After careful consideration, it was decided that a tobacco-free campus policy would contribute to the health and safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors,” said Cecilia Cervantes, Hennepin Technical College president.

The college will become one of nearly 50 campus locations across the state that have gone smoke and tobacco free.
