    Why Higher Degree by Research? Through Higher Degree by Research study,you can improve your workplace practices,your career, as well as your future prospectsand those of the community in which youlive and work.

    Many countries require university professorsto have a PhD that reects their depth ofknowledge in their eld of interest.

    Build on your experience or pursueyour passions As a Higher Degree by Research candidate,you are about to commence a course ofstudy leading to the highest qualicationtypically offered by a university. HDR studyis normally undertaken after an Honoursdegree has been successfully completed.This may be immediately on conclusionof the Honours degree, or after a period inthe workforce. Sometimes practical workexperience is a requirement of entry.

    Studying at these levels provides studentswith the opportunity to build their knowledgein a specic area through a program ofstudy involving coursework and/or research,resulting in the completion of a dissertationor thesis for Master or Doctoral awards.

    Professional research and HDR studies atCSU include PhD (Doctor of Philosophy),Doctorates and Master (Honours) programsin a range of elds.     Responsibilities of the supervisory teamYour supervisory team will provide valuablesupport during your research project.Regular meetings with your supervisoryteam throughout your project will help youstay focused on your project, talk about anyissues you are having, and discuss ideasabout your research methods and ndings.The team will provide feedback on yourresearch and drafts, as well as providinggeneral support to keep you on track.

    Each member of your supervisory team mayonly have responsibilities relating to certainaspects of your research that correspondwith their areas of expertise, but together,

    they can be a valuable source of support,encouragement and advice throughout yourresearch project.

    The supervisory team can provideguidance on:

    the nature of research the standard expected for particular

    degrees your choice of research topic planning your research program ethical issues relating to your research methodological issues data analysis issues They can also help you with:

    exploring solutions to unexpectedproblems that arise during yourresearch

    providing feedback on drafts andprompt responses to any enquiries

    The Research Ofce is the centralpoint of contact for researchers,research students, supervisors,managers and research agenciesand will provide information andsupport for the administration andmanagement of research and HigherDegrees by Research at CSU.

    Support through theResearch OfceDuring your candidature, you will havesupport every step of the way. A principalsupervisor and supervisory team will provide

    all the support you need to develop yourproject, conduct your research, and offeradvice as you progress with your research.

    Your supervisory team may come fromvaried backgrounds, providing a rangeof perspectives and expertise in differentaspects of your selected topic.

    Research expertise

    Charles Sturt University engages instrategic, applied research that focuseson signicant problems or issues.     Key areas of research concentration andexpertise can be identied through CSU'sResearch Centres and Institutes. Signicantresearch also occurs outside of designatedresearch centres, including in partnershipwith other universities, industry, businessand not-for-prot organisations.

    Responsibilities of the principal supervisorYour principal supervisor is a key point ofcontact. As you complete your researchproject, you will have regular consultationswith your principal supervisor so theycan monitor your progress and provideassistance with any difculties you mayexperience. Your principal supervisor willreport back to the Faculty Sub-Dean,Research, about your research progress.

    The principal supervisor has nalresponsibility for decisions the supervisoryteam may make in relation to your project.

    The principal supervisor can help you with:

    negotiating the role of eachco-supervisor

    encouraging other members of thesupervisory team to be activelyinvolved in your research endeavours

    ensuring your progress and quality ofwork meets the standards expectedby the University and, where possible,assisting you to meet the requiredstandards

    ensuring you gain relevant approvalfrom University and/or other ethicscommittees before collecting researchdata from human or animal subjects.

    They will also advise the Research AdvisoryCommittee of the names and credentials ofsuitable examiners to assess your research.

    You will need to have a general idea ofwhat you would like to explore in yourresearch project before you commence yourcandidature. This idea can be rened onceyou get started, to focus on a specic areaof interest.

    Good starting points include thinkingabout aspects of your undergraduate orpostgraduate degrees that particularlyintrigued or interested you and that youwould like to explore further. You shouldtalk to your lecturers about their areas ofexpertise or discuss research topics withpast or current students.

    Research in an area that interests you asyou will spend a lot of time working on yourresearch project so it should be somethingyou are passionate about. The Universitycan provide you with potential researchtopics to help point you in the right direction.

    Your research should not be so broad youcannot cover it enough detail, or so narrowyou will struggle to nd enough materialfor your nal work. You need to choose aproject you can complete in the permittedtime.

    Prospective Higher Degree by Researchstudents are strongly encouraged to makecontact with the appropriate FacultySub-Dean before submitting an application.

    Choose the way you studyHaving decided that the time is right totake on Higher Degree by Research study,thought now needs to be given to theappropriate study method to best realiseyour academic ambitions. Regardless of theoption selected, you will be supported alongthe way by CSU staff who are committed toensuring your success.

    While there may be a courseworkcomponent within an HDR, when yourestudying a Master degree or Doctorate/PhDyou can spend at least two-thirds of yourtime on a thesis based on your own originalresearch.

    Many HDR students need to t their studyaround current commitments, so CSU offersexibility and the support you need to makeyour study work for you.

    Whether you decide to pursue full-time orpart-time study, on campus or by distanceeducation, there really is a study mode thatwill suit your individual needs and lifestyle.

    Choose where you studyResearch can be conducted from anywherein the world as our online facilities allow youto access our libraries, submit assignmentsand progress reports, access materials, anduse forums and chat rooms to connect withsupervisors and other researchers wheneverand wherever it suits you.     CSU Interact

    CSU Interact is an integrated online,collaborative learning environment thatsupports learning and teaching at CSU.This allows staff and students to access anumber of CSU-developed applications,as well as a collection of new teaching andlearning tools.

    Through CSU Interact, you also have accessto a range of tools including wikis, blogs,eportfolios, news, screen-sharing and chatfeatures.

    As a Higher Degree by Researchstudent, you may be required to payfees for your course, however, youmay also be able to access otherfunds, such as grants from industryand professional bodies, scholarshipsand other funding to help you withthe costs associated with carrying outyour research.

    FeesHigher Degree by Research candidates fallinto one of two groups, fee paying andnon-fee paying. If you are enrolled in a fee

    paying course, fees are payable twice ayear (for each six months of study) and varydepending upon the course undertaken andenrolment status (full-time or part-time).Details on the level of fees payable can befound at:www.csu.edu.au/courses/fees-and-costs

    If you are an Australian citizen or permanentresident or a citizen of New Zealand andhave a scholarship to support your livingexpenses (a stipend) then in most cases youare eligible for, and allocated, a researchtraining scheme (RTS) place, which pays foryour tuition fees. Effectively, your fees arepaid by the Australian Government.

    Additionally, some HDR candidates mayhave tuition fees paid through a variety ofother schemes such as Faculty fundedplaces and the CSU Academic Staff HigherDegree Training Scheme. Details of theseschemes can be found in the 'scholarships'section of the CSU Research web-page:www.csu.edu.au/research/support/ research-students

    You should contact the Sub-Dean or Associate Dean of your Faculty if you wishto discuss Faculty fee-waiver places.

    Funding for HDR candidatesScholarships and grantsCSU makes signicant, strategicinvestments annually to support researchand research education. These investmentsinclude Faculty Compact Funding,CSU Research Centres funding, HDRscholarships and fee support, infrastructureinvestments and a range of internal researchsupport schemes.

    The Joint Academic Scholarship OnlineNetwork (JASON) is a useful, one-stopresource for scholarship information.Importantly, many of these scholarshipscan be applied for at any stage of the HDRcandidature, to support the HDR candidate

    in future years. Check the guidelines foreach scheme to see whether this opportunityapplies to that particular scheme.

    Centre (NWGIC)The NWGIC exists to use knowledgegenerated by scientic research to drivevalue-adding innovation through extension,education or training channels.

    The Centre integrates the viticultureand wine science expertise of staff fromCSU and NSW Department of PrimaryIndustries, co-located at the Ron PotterCentre in Wagga Wagga, NSW and isfunded by the University, the Departmentand the NSW Wine Industry Association.     Public and Contextual Theology

    (PaCT)Public theology is concerned with analysisof the public expression of the Christianfaith, and the public implications of theChristian faith for the whole of society andthe environment.

    Contextual theology refers to analysis ofthe way theology has been conceived inparticular contexts. It is concerned with theinteraction between universal themes intheology and issues relating to the particularcontext in which theology is developed. In

    Australia it is particularly concerned withthe effects of dispossession of the land ofthe Indigenous peoples and the ongoingprocess of reconciliation.

    This research centre breaks new groundin the theological scene in Australia.Traditionally theology has been undertakenwithin a narrow ecclesial environmentignoring the wider contexts. The twinfocus of the research group, both publicand contextual, point to an overridingconcern for questions and issues relevantin contemporary society in the Australiansetting.

    Systems (CRiCS)The CSU's Centre for Research in ComplexSystems (CRiCS) has achieved over$2 million in National Competitive Grants,principally from the Australian ResearchCouncil (ARC).

    Since its early years, the Centre for Researchin Complex Systems has grown to includeaspects of business modelling and the socialsystems theory. The group comprises about20 academic staff members with PhDs anda number of research students with a focuson the fundamental principles of intelligent,

    adaptive systems.The Centre is a primary node of the ARCnetwork in complex and open systems(COSNet) and a member of the ARC networkin human and computer speech (HCSNet). Itwas also instrumental in the successful bidfor the CRC in Spatial Information and hasan ongoing project funded by this CRC.

    The Doctor of Veterinary Studies is a distinctiveprogram with the objectives to advance clinicalresearch and professional practice in veterinary
