Haryana: culture
Haryana has been a cultural heartland of the country forover centuries. It is a place of diversified races, beliefsand faiths. The people of Haryana are tradition boundand have preserved their rich culture in the form of
dance, drama, music, arts, and celebration of variousfairs and festivals throughout the year. Haryana¶s folk culture is based on old customs of meditation, Yogaand chanting of Vedic Mantras. The seasonal andreligious festivals bring affability among the people. They
take great delight in saang (a folk dance), dramas, balladsand songs during these occasions.

Diwali
This is the festival of light which is celebrated all
over the state. This festival symbolizes the victory of
good over evil. Deepawali commemorates the return
of Lord Rama by completing his exile of 14 years. The
festival usually comes in the month of Oct-Nov.
Holi
Holi is the festival of colour. Four days before the
festival, married women play Holi with their men folk by
throwing coloured water on them. The day following
Holi, Dhulandi (Phag), men folk throw water on women who
retaliate by a mock beating with sticks or kolras (twisted cloth
strips).

Bathing at Sohna
Sohna is a small town known for its hot spring which has medicinal properties. Thousands of
people gather at this site to take bath in this
sulphur spring. The festival falls on Somwati
Amavas (new moon on Monday) which is
considered doubly auspicious
Dussera
The preparation of this festival starts a month
before the day of Dussera. During this period
the Ramlila Plays are held and it comes to anend on this day with the blazing of Ravana

festival to worship snakes. A tradition is connected with this
festival. A number of legends have clustered around Gugga Pir or
Zahir Pir (the saint
). He is also referred to as Baggar wala because
of his grave near Dadrewa near Ganga nagar, a tract over which
he is said to have ruled. He was reputed to have the power of
curing people of snake-bite. Monday is his day, the date being 9th.
The shrine is distinguished by its square shape with minarets and
domed roof. It is called 'Mari'
Surajkund Crafts Mela
Surajkund is a place of international importance because the
famous Surajkund Crafts Mela is held annually in the month
of February and continued for two weeks. The fair was
launched in 1981 by the Haryana State Tourism
Corporation to promote the talent among young artists
from all over the country.

Dressing styles
The vibrancy of the people of Haryana finds
expression in their lifestyle too. Their simplicity
and spirited enthusiasm for life is evident in
their way of dressing up. The women in the
region have a special attraction towards colours
The men generally wear 'Dhoti', the wrap around
cloth, tucked in between the legs with a white-coloured
kurta worn atop it. 'Pagri' is the traditional headgear
for men, which is now worn mainly by the old
villagers. All-white attire is a status symbol for men.

Dressing styles
W omen love to wear colourful dresses.
Their basic trousseau includes 'Damaan',
'Kurti' & 'Chunder'. 'Chunder' is the
long, coloured piece of cloth, decorated with shiny laces, meant to cover the head
and is drawn in the front like the 'pallav'
of the saree. Kurti is a shirt like blouse,
usually white in colour. The 'Daaman' is
the flairy ankle-long skirt, in striking
colours.

Dance and Arts
Dance and Music
Many traditional and contemporary dances are parts of Haryana¶sculture. Traditional dances include Dhamal, Loor, Khoria, Saang, Phag, and Ratvai. All these dances are performed in festive seasons or on special occasions.
Arts and Crafts
Haryana is famous for its rich art and crafts. Phulkari is an extraordinary handicraft full of magnificent colours and intricate embroidery. The state is quitefamous for its woven work, be it shawls, dhurries, robes or lungis. The Haryana shawlis a spectacular piece of clothing embellished with diverse figures of birds, trees,flowers on the sheet of cloth. It has great demand in international market.
Pottery is the most common feature of any village in Haryana. Painting and makingstone sculpture are other art forms which are being performed from ancient times.

Cuisines
Haryana being an agrarian state has retained its simplicity in its cuisine. The 'Land of Rotis' is an appropriate title for Haryana as people are fond of eating different kinds of rotis (chapatti) here. W heat rotis are common and so are ³baajre ki roti .́
Fresh vegetables are the main constituents of Haryanvi cuisine which is primarily vegetarian. Dals are not consumed daily and vegetables seasoned lightly are preferred.
Tinda, ghia (kind of sweet gourd) and other seasonal vegetables constitute a major part of the daily diet in Haryana. People get great pleasure in
consuming milk and milk products as these are
easily available. The various kinds of cuisines
prepared in Haryana are:

LANGUAGES
Haryanavi has traditionally been the dominant language spoken
by the martial people of Haryana. Post-1947, Punjabi is also
spoken by a lot of people in Haryana especially by
those Hindus and Sikhs who came over
from Pakistan. Punjabi is second official language of
Haryana. Sanskrit is also taught in most of the schools in
Haryana. In towns and cities, English is still to be adopted as
the household lingo, but is spoken in a hazy mixture
of Haryanvi. Other language is Ahirwati, it is an Indo-Aryanlanguage, classified as a Rajasthani language, and is spoken in
the Mahendragarh, Rewari and Gurgaon districts of Haryana.

Conclusion
Haryana has a rich cultural heritage that goes way back tothe Vedic times. The state is rich in folklore.The people here havetheir own traditions. The age old customs of meditation, Yoga andchanting of Vedic Mantras, are still observed by the masses. Famous
yoga guru S wami Ramdev is from Mahendragarh in Haryana.
Seasonal and religious festivals glorify the culture of this region.Dance is said to be the mother of all arts. Music and poetry exist intune, painting and architecture in space. Dance is not just a form of recreation but something needed to release physical and emotionalenergy.
The people of Haryana have preserved their old religious and social
traditions. They celebrate festivals with great enthusiasm andtraditional fervor. Regarding eating habits, there is an idiom thatsays, Hara-Bhara Haryana, Jahan Doodh-Dahi ka Khana (meaning a lush-green state where milk and curd are the food).
