Editor’s note

Specialty publications editor

With Christmas less than amonth away, conventional wisdomtells us we should already have ajump on our holiday shopping. Butmix in work, family and otherobligations that don’t go awaysimply because it’s the holidayseason, andwisdom fliesout the window.

But with alittle preplan-ning and care-ful thought, youcan get theperfect gifts foreveryone onyour list.

Formulate abattle plan

First, givesome seriousthought to ev-eryone on yourlist. Some, likeyour kids, are easy – they’re notshy about telling you all the thingsthey want for Christmas. But oth-ers are more challenging. What doyou get for the man who has ev-erything, who says “Oh, I don’tneed anything” when you ask himwhat he’d like?

These are the ones who take alittle more work. For example, dothey have any hobbies? Are theysports fans? Do they have pets?Often, the answers to these ques-tions can help generate gift ideas.

Next, make a list. That ensuresyou won’t forget anyone and thosegreat ideas for gifts. Reminder:list everyone’s sizes and favorite

colors. Finally, map out your route. You

can find many one-of-a-kind giftsat local shopping districts, andyour dollars stay close to home.

Gift ideasHere are some gift ideas for

everyone onyour list:

» Electronicsare always indemand. Keyitems includenew interactivevideo game sys-tems such as Wiiand Kinect andtheir accesso-ries; MP3 play-ers; and e-read-ers and tabletPCs. Internet-ready mobilephones are alsomuch in demand.

» Personal gifts are also verypopular. These include books, craft items, puzzles, desk calen-dars, and food and wine selections.

» Heirloom gifts can be a goodchoice. A good watch or piece ofjewelry can become a treasureditem that’s passed down from gen-eration to generation for years ofenjoyment.

Charge…it!Now you can hit the stores with

confidence. But in a twist, manyexperts are recommending youmake your gift purchases on cred-it.

Days are never boringat Plants by Wolfangel, says the garden center’sowner, Barb Henry. Thatsaid, never in our wildestimagination did we thinkthat we would look outthe back of our green-house to see what wehave been looking at forthe last 7-plus months – asinkhole the size of afootball field and 35 feetdeep. The sinkhole start-ed upstream and grewlarge enough with thespring’s unprecedentedrainfall that the pipe 35feet underground con-

tinued to collapse, follow-ing a path that ran thewidth of our property, essentially cutting it inhalf.

The resulting limitedspace and loss of ournormal ability to exitthrough the rear of the lotnecessitated a nearlycomplete revamping ofhow we do business.

Fast forward past thedays of lawyers, bulldoz-ers and dump trucks thatseemed to go on and onand on, and I’m sure youcan imagine how excitedwe were to see the big

equipment putting downthe final coat of asphaltthe Monday beforeThanksgiving. The eventmarked the end of whatcan only be described asa very unusual period inthe life and times ofPlants by Wolfangel.

We celebrated theoccasion when the firstsemi trailer-truck pulledinto our lot for the firsttime in months the verynext morning. It was theannual arrival of ourFraser fir Christmastrees from North Caroli-na, and it felt great to beable to again unload in therear of our property and, hopefully, get back tobusiness as usual.

Starting with the Fri-day after Thanksgiving, every year we have fam-ilies who traditionallycome to buy that perfecttree together as a family. It is such fun to watch thelittle kids excitedly runfrom tree to tree lookingfor that perfect one astheir parents try to keepup.

I remember one yearwe had a mom come inand pick out and pay for“the tree” with the planthat we pull the sold tagwhen we saw them alldrive in together thatevening, so her childrencould think that they hadpicked it out.

I think that it’s thelittle things we are able todo as a small family-owned and -operatedbusiness that makes shop-ping at our garden centerspecial. We take pride inhow we do things andwork hard to establish thereputation as the place togo when you want peopleto help you who enjoydoing so and who knowmore than a little aboutwhat they are selling.

I recognize how luckyI am to be able to go do

Even with its ability tothrow something like afootball-sized sinkhole inour path, I have to saythat owning and oper-ating this garden centerfeels most days like it iswhat I was meant to do. Iwill also admit that it

would be OK with me ifthings could settle downnow and we could have aDecember with normalsnowfall and a springseason in 2012 that is thefirst in three that hasnormal temperatures, rainfall, economy and gasprices. After a year like2011 and the negativeeffects the sinkhole hadon the year’s sales thatwould be very OK with allof us! We very much needto make up for some lostground – no pun intended.

“In my quest to prac-tice medicine accordingto the best the scienceand art have to offer, unencumbered by thosein the insurance industryand government wholack expertise and yetwould dictate to physi-cians and their patients, Iam re-opening my pri-vate practice, on a cash-,check- or credit card-only basis, with the ex-ception that I will con-tinue to accept Medi-care,” said Michael D.Strickland, M.D., owner

Comprehensive Health-care of Cincinnati. Pa-tients can still submitbills to their insurancefor reimbursement, andComprehensive Health-care will have informa-tion and referrals to bill-ing services available.

“Insurance cannot bethe answer to fundingroutine and commonmedical care,” Dr. Strick-land said. “As an analogy,it makes sense to insureyour car for an uncom-mon but high-cost event(a major accident), but if

you cannot afford oil andtire changes, you cannotsolve that problem bygiving what money youhave available for thispurpose to a third party.”

Dr. Strickland cited arecent CBS newscast thatreported the averagehealth insurance premi-um paid per year by U.S.families has topped$15,000. “This is neitheraffordable nor neces-sary,” says Dr. Strick-land. “Higher deductiblecoverage for more se-vere events, a healthier

lifestyle, and below-de-ductible amounts paidthrough Health SavingsAccounts (tax-free andpossibly employer-matched), or other meth-od may be a path for-ward. You can save up to50 percent on your pre-miums.” Dr. Stricklandurges readers to talkwith their employer orinsurance agent.

Medical practicestypically spend one-thirdor more of their grossmoney and time expendi-tures on dealing withinsurance and govern-ment third-party payers,Dr. Strickland explained.“We will use these re-sources instead to deliv-er higher quality care ata lower price.” The costis $50 per 15-minute timeslot (half visits availablefor simple follow-upproblems, e.g., sorethroat), with office testsbilled separately. Youwill know the costs andoptions ahead of time, hesaid.

ComprehensiveHealthcare of Cincinnatidraws routine labs (cash-discounted) onsite, and

offers immediate onsiteultrasound imaging. Pay-ments are due at time ofservice. In addition, $4/month generic drugs canbe prescribed in the ma-jority of cases.

If needed, Compre-hensive Healthcare canrefer you to laboratoryand radiology servicesthat give one-third dis-counts to those who paytheir own bills. Yourmedical documentation(including an explanationin lay terms of diagnosisand plan) will be provid-ed to you at the time ofservice. Insurance willnot pay for services pro-vided by telephone oremail, services whichresult in untold losses inwages and time for tripsto the office. You need insulation inyour home to provideresistance to heat flow. The more resistanceyour insulation provides, the lower the heating andcooling costs. Many peo-ple think that “heatrises.” But according toOwens Corning certifiedinspector Justin Shoe-maker from Rooftime,“Heat chases cold, so yes,in the winter heat risesfrom your warm homeinto your cold attic, butin summer the super-heated attic air is tryingto flow down into yourair conditioning.”

According to the De-partment of Energy, heatflows from a warmer to acooler space. In the win-ter, heat flow moves di-rectly from heatedspaces to unheated attics. To maintain comfort, heat lost in the wintermust be replaced by yourheating system and theheat gained in the sum-mer must be removed byyour cooling system.Properly insulating andventilating your attic willdecrease the flow byproviding an effectiveresistance to the heat, making your home morecomfortable, loweringyour monthly bill, andreducing wear and tearon your HVAC unit.

Insulation’s resistanceto heat flow is measuredor rated in terms of itsthermal resistance, orR-value. In our region,R-38, or 12 inches of in-sulation in the attic, isthe minimum acceptablelevel, and R-49, or 17inches, is what the DOErecommends to achievetrue comfort and savings.Only homes built after2005 are required to haveR-49 levels. If your housewas built before 2005,

you probably need moreinsulation in your attic. There are two basictypes of insulation thatare effective in an attic:Fiberglas and cellulose. While it is true that ei-ther can be effectivewhen installed properlyto correct levels, thetrick is to find a companyto do this.

Jim Schue of UnionKy., recently found outhow hard it is to find agood company. He says,“I called five companiesthat I found from homeshows, the BBB and An-gie’s List. Wow! What ahuge difference I got.”According to Schue, twoof the companies showedup with no ladder to ac-cess his attic, and offeredtheir bid by guessingwhat he needed based onhis home’s age andsquare footage.

Schue had met thethird bidder at a homeshow and the visit actu-ally started off well. “Theman had a ladder andpoked his head into myattic, so I was feelingrelief,” Schue said. “Butthen he came right backout, sat down and gaveme a bid that said if myhouse needed things likeextra vents and baffles, they would do them foradditional costs. Itseemed very unprofes-sional and might end upcosting me lots morethan they quoted.”

Schue finally hired thefourth company that hecontacted. He found ANew Rooftime on Angie’sList and requested aquote. He says, “Justinarrived on time, wearinga uniform and put boo-tees over his boots whenhe came into my home.”He added, “Rooftime hada thermal camera that

showed where we werelosing heat, got into myattic, and came down andshowed us video of whathe found up there.”

A New Rooftime iscertified by Owens Cor-ning ( inventors of Fi-berglas insulation) as aTop of the House® in-staller. Installers attendannual training seminarsand understand how in-sulation, ventilation andradiation all work togeth-er to save homeownersmoney. A free attic in-spection from Rooftimeincludes a thorough up-in-the-attic investigationchecking for cloggedsoffit vents, air gaps onside walls, bathroom fans

that are not vented to anoutside duct and currentR-values. They actuallyuse an iPad to video theinspection so that theycan show you exactlywhat is needed. They alsouse the iPad to plug yourhome’s information into aprogram that instantlycalculates your cost, allthe tax breaks available(there are three), andwhat you can expect inenergy savings over one, three and five years.

“We got Rooftime’sfree bid, hired them andscheduled them for aSaturday-morning installlast month. The two-manteam arrived on time in aneat truck with a written

work order of what need-ed done. They put tarpsover every place theywere working andjumped right to it,”Schue said. “That after-noon when they werethrough they let me seewhat they had done andonly then did I have topay anything.” Schuesaid his home was leftclean by Rooftime’s crew,is more comfortable nowthan before, and his lastutility bill “went downthirty-eight bucks!”

With the holiday sea-son come parties and fiveto 10 extra pounds. We alltell ourselves that oncethe holidays are over wehave got to start exercis-ing and lose weight. But,let’s be real. One of thereasons we fail to deliveron these promises to our-selves is because we can-not find the time to exer-cise.

I use to be a slave toexercise, says Dr. DavidJ. Marcon of MarconChiropractic & Wellness.Whenever someone asksme how often I exercise Ican see their disbelief

when I tell them 30 min-utes a week. I know itsounds too good to betrue. I wasn’t always anadvocate. It is hard tobelieve that almost fouryears ago I worked outpractically every day forat least an hour. I learnedto exercise from coachesand by watching otherguys in the gym. Mymindset was that onlylong and hard workoutscould produce results. AsI got older, my time be-came more valuable andthe combination of fre-quency and intensity ofmy workouts wore me out

physically and mentally.Joint pain and difficultysleeping were the pri-mary side effects, but adiminished return on myhard work was my great-est frustration. Yearsearlier, I had been in-troduced to super-slowtraining by a few friendsin the fitness industry. Atthe time I wasn’t open tothe notion that less wasbetter, but five yearslater I was finally readyfor the change.

How do you exerciseonly 30 minutes a week? After studying the princi-ples of super-slow train-

ing, I started my trainingwith three 30-minute,whole-body workouts aweek. Even after readingand studying I couldn’tjust work out for only 30minutes. In a very shortperiod, I realized that Iwasn’t able to recoverfast enough to performmy next workout. I sep-arated my workouts byfour days, then five days, six days and finally, theunspeakable, one weekapart. I have maintainedthis structure for threeyears and during thattime my body fat hasdropped in half, my sleep

and joint pain have im-proved dramatically and Ihave more time to spendon other interests in-cluding my wife and twoteenagers.

Can anyone benefitfrom 30 minutes of exer-cise? Over the last twoyears I have trained aselect number of clientsin my studio. They havebeen results-orientedprofessional men andwomen, seniors with hipand knee issues and stay-at-home moms on tightschedules. Some wantedweight loss; others, in-creased strength andperformance; and othersjust wanted to feel better. The unique training prin-ciples make it safe andeasy to train all types ofpeople. Also, one-on-oneinstruction allows every-one to feel comfortable.

How can 30 minutesof exercise help with somany conditions? Thesecret to the success ofsuper-slow training is theproper dosage of exerciseand rest in order to opti-mize the body’s potentialto produce muscle tissue.Muscles are the primemovers of joints. There-fore, the stronger ourmuscles are the easier itis to move arthritic joints.Because we use con-trolled movements, themajority of the stress isplaced on the muscle, notthe joint. More lean mus-cle has been shown toincrease metabolism, elevate energy levels, stabilize moods and im-prove sleep. All of thesebenefits positively affectweight loss and bodyimage.

Will 30 minutes ofexercise work for you?Call or stop in and sched-ule a free session. We’reat 8136 Beechmont Ave.in Anderson Township.Call 513-474-1111 or visitwww.drdavidmarcon-.com.
