Supporting Survivors. Promoting Prevention. Creating Change.

Dear Friends:

The air is getting cooler, the leaves are turning color and the winds of change are blowing.

Change is a part of everything we do at Cleveland Rape Crisis Center and this season is no different. From helping survivors thrive after sexual trauma has changed their lives to pushing for change in social and cultural norms that support sexual violence, change is something we strive for in all aspects of our work.

This fall, the Center will be welcoming the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence (OAESV) to Cleveland, creating local jobs and statewide change. OAESV is a statewide coalition of rape crisis service providers and will be co-located in CRCC’s offices in the Leader Building in downtown Cleveland. Read more about this partnership inside.

This fall, CRCC also will be expanding services into Geauga County. Beginning soon, a CRCC therapist will be accepting appointments in the offices of WomenSafe, Inc. in Chardon.

And finally, we continue our “Faces of Change” marketing campaign, designed to put a face on the issue of sexual violence by featuring survivors, volunteers, donors and friends who are all working to change the way our community responds to sexual violence.

You, too, can be a Face of Change, by donating your time, talent or treasure to the Center. Thank you to each person who has already joined.

Sincerely,

Megan O’BryanChief Executive Officer

Spotlight on The George Gund Foundation In 1974, when Cleveland Rape Crisis Center existed only as a crisis hotline answered by four volunteers, The George Gund Founda-tion made an early investment, awarding the Center one of its very first grants. That grant allowed CRCC to hire professional staff and grows its services. Today, CRCC helps more than 20,000 people per year with continued support from The George Gund Foundation.

The Center is grateful to the Board and staff of The George Gund Foundation for recognizing the need for social and policy change in our community and awarding a two-year grant to CRCC for this purpose.

Thank you to The George Gund Foundation for making this important work possible.

CampCreateCleveland Rape Crisis Center welcomed many children to Camp Create this summer for fun, food and friendship. A week-long day camp hosted at Lakewood Park, Camp Create provides a safe space for children who have witnessed or experienced violence, teaching new, healthy ways to cope with their life experiences.

The camp is led by therapists, educators and advocates from CRCC and the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center and is specifically designed for children ages 7-12. There is no cost for children to attend.

This season, we salute Ohio Rep. Nickie Antonio for re-introducing the Ohio Prevention First Act (OPFA), H.B. 281.

Among other things, this law would ensure that sexual assault victims have access to emergency contraception and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases in all hospital emergency rooms.

Cleveland Rape Crisis Center calls on Ohio’s lawmakers to vote favorably for this incredibly important legislation.

Creating a Healthier OhioCRCC Partnering with Statewide Organization to Strengthen Rape Crisis Services across Ohio

Many rape crisis programs across Ohio have recently closed. Many Ohio counties had no rape crisis services to begin with, leaving more than 100,000 sexual violence survivors in our state with nowhere to call for help.

“This is simply unacceptable,” said CRCC’s Megan O’Bryan.

For years, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center has been working with stakeholders to build a strong statewide coalition of rape crisis service providers to address this gap and strengthen the programs that have survived the economic downturn and are thriving. This summer, the Center took an even larger role in bringing this vision to reality.

CRCC signed a management services contract with the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence (OAESV). Megan O’Bryan became the CEO of both CRCC and OAESV, although both organizations will maintain separate 501c3s, Boards of Directors, brands, missions and staff. The organizations will share office space, equipment and services, such as accounting and technology.

“This arrangement allows the statewide coalition to focus on its core work of supporting rape crisis programs throughout Ohio while leveraging the existing organizational infrastructure of CRCC, “ said O’Bryan.

OAESV is re-locating to Cleveland from Columbus, although its new staff members – Statewide Director Katie Hanna and Outreach Manager Kara Porter – will spend a large percentage of time traveling around the State.

“Strengthening the statewide coalition dedicated to the intervention and prevention of sexual violence is paramount to creating a healthy future for Ohioans”, says OAESV’s Katie Hanna. “With CRCC’s leadership and support, OAESV has the opportunity to thrive. Through outreach across all corners of the state in rural, urban and suburban communities, the impact will be far reaching. “

We get by with a little help from our Friends…Thank you, CRCC Volunteers!Volunteers make all the difference and make it possible for CRCC to provide free services to sexual assault survivors, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

These dedicated individuals answer more than 3,000 calls on the 24-hour rape crisis and support line, assist more than 900 people in need of advocacy at hospitals and police departments and provide support, information and resources to survivors, their friends and family members and area professionals. Special event and administrative volunteers donate hundreds of hours of support for fundraising and front office needs.

We extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to our volunteers. Not only are you making a difference in the lives of those you help, but you also play an integral role in the movement to end sexual violence.

Later this fall, sexual assault survivors in Geauga County will have access to therapeutic services much closer to home. A CRCC therapist will be accepting appointments at WomenSafe, Inc.’s The Green House, a domestic violence shelter at 12041 Ravenna Road in Chardon.

Women, men and children who have experienced any form of sexual violence at any point in their life are eligible for services. Just like CRCC services in Cuyahoga County, there is no cost or insurance required.

This expansion is possible because of a new partnership with WomenSafe, Inc. and funding provided by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office through the Victims of Crime Act.

For more information or to make an appointment, call 216-619-6194 x 141.

The Children are Our Future: Teach them Well and Let them Lead the Way!

An independent evaluation confirms that Youth 360 members increase their knowledge about sexual violence and positively impact attitudes about vio-lence prevention. Alex Leslie, preven-tion specialist at CRCC and creator of the program, has been included in state and national discussions about innova-tive practices in primary prevention of sexual violence.

Look for more great stories about how these young people are creating change in our community!

Youth 360 participants work in small groups to analyze the portrayal of women in advertisements.
