LISTS DIRECT RELIEF PROVIDED MORE HELP TO MORE PEOPLE THAN EVER BEFORE IN FISCAL YEAR 2010—$243 MILLION IN MEDICAL AID. Testing millions of women

for HIV. Providing medicines for uninsured people in the U.S. Helping people in emergencies here at home and around the world. Challenges. Emergencies. Partnerships to help. Here's this year's top lists for each.

1. RAPID HIV TESTING OF PREGNANT WOMEN Every 48 seconds, a child is infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. It is essential to focus resources on where this infectious disease exists to save those who have contracted it and can transmit it and those who are most likely to contract it. Deciding who to treat requires knowing who is sick. Rapid test kits are donated by Abbott—16 million tests to prevention programs throughout the developing world since 2002—and distributed by Direct Relief to 69 developing countries eligible for the program.

2. ANTIRETROVIRALS FOR HEALTHY LIFE According to a 2008 UNAIDS report, an estimated 33.2 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. Africa has been the hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, as the continent is home to 68 percent of those infected. Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), which signifi cantly delay the progression of HIV to AIDS and allow people infected with HIV to live relatively normal, healthy lives, are available on average to only 44 percent of those who require the drugs. Direct Relief partnered with the OGRA Foundation in Kenya and the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare in Zimbabwe to distribute ARVs to more than 6,000 HIV-infected people annually.

3. FIGHTING OPPORTUNISTIC INFECTION Cryptococcal meningitis and other serious fungal infections are frequent complications in patients infected with HIV. Through the Difl ucan® Partnership Program, Pfi zer's antifungal medicine is made available by Direct Relief—$74.1 million in distributed Difl ucan this year—to governments and nongovernmental organizations in developing countries free of charge for the treatment of opportunistic infections associated with HIV/AIDS.

WHAT THE BIGGEST RESPONSE IN OUR 62-YEAR HISTORY LOOKS LIKE

To support ongoing relief efforts in Pakistan after record fl ooding that killed more than 1,600 people and affected 20 million others there, Direct Relief has provided $2.6 million in emergency medical aid to several long-time partners in Pakistan. This support includes three in-country shipments from Abbott Laboratories in Pakistan to the American Refugee Committee (ARC) and Marie Stopes Society-Pakistan—quickly delivering specifi cally requested antibiotics, anti-infectives, anti-infl ammatory drugs, and nutritional products to the patients who need them. Partners in Pakistan report that several areas are still underwater after late summer drenching rains and fl ooding, and skin and chest infections are increasing. ARC is operating a total of 23 health facilities and four mobile teams throughout Pakistan. The healthcare teams are providing a range of crucial services, including maternal and child healthcare, malaria treatment, and psychological support for trauma survivors.

Direct Relief USA is the only nonprofi t licensed to distribute pharmaceuticals in all 50 states, bolstering themedical resources of 1,100 clinics nationwide so they can care for the ever-growing number of uninsured and underserved people.

Direct Relief USA plays an integral part in California’s Standardized Emergency Management System through partnership with the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA). This allows us to further represent clinics, health centers, and public health offi cials by anticipating and addressing their material resource needs during an emergency. At the request of Cal EMA—due to our expertise in medical product distribution and our relationships with the country's leading pharmaceutical and medical manufacturers—Direct Relief leads the distribution of donated medical resources to front-line providers during an emergency for the Business and Utility Operations Center (BUOC). The BUOC engages private industry during emergencies, and includes representatives from Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, the California Utilities Emergency Association, San Francisco Helicopters, the California Resiliency Alliance, and the California Grocers Association.

A EDNA ADAN ISMAIL

A CHAMPION OF WOMEN AND GIRLSIn Somaliland, as in many developing countries, pregnancy is a high-risk health condition and delivery can be life-threatening to both mother and child. To help women and their babies survive childbirth in her country, Edna Adan Ismail founded a hospital in 2002 with her own funds that serves as a center for care and training. Direct Relief has supported the Edna Adan University Hospital since 2005 with more than $1 million in medicines and supplies, and joined with the Fistula Foundation to build a surgical block at the hospital with three new operating theaters that have just opened. These facilities will vastly increase women’s access to needed surgeries and interventions when complications arise during delivery. Among her many accomplishments, Ismail was the fi rst girl in her country to read, the fi rst nurse-midwife, and the former First Lady. She also is a deeply committed advocate for abolishing the practice of female genital mutilation, which disfi gures girls at a very young age. This dynamic woman was featured in Half the Sky, by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, for her groundbreaking work in championing the rights and health of women and girls in Somaliland and throughout the Horn of Africa. Never one to think small, Ismail plans to train 1,000 new midwives which would vastly improve the chances that a woman in Somaliland would have trained support present when it came time to deliver her baby. This, ultimately, would save lives. To give women and their babies the best chance to thrive, Direct Relief supports training and equipping midwives through programs in 16 countries around the world, and stands behind extraordinary people like Edna Adan Ismail.

MIDWIVES SAVE FAMILIESDuring childbirth, many women around the world rely on midwives to help them deliver, because health facilities are too expensive or too far away. When properly trained, midwives make the difference between a safe delivery and a compromised situation. Direct Relief supports programs in 16 countries that train and equip midwives with kits to attend 100 clean deliveries.
