eLoran CRADA Executive Summary

Without differential corrections or augmentations, eLoran results have easily demonstrated the ability to meet the (+/-) one microsecond timing synchronization requirement proposed in the 2014 Federal Radionavigation Plan (FRP)

Without differential corrections or augmentations, eLoran results within a 500 mile range of the test transmitter location have demonstrated (+/-) 500 nanoseconds synchronization to UTC

Without differential corrections or augmentations, 95% of all data collected was within 156 Nanoseconds of UTC

eLoran CRADA Executive Summary

With differential corrections applied at certain locations in the vicinity of a Differential eLoran Reference Station, eLoran demonstrated time synchronization to UTC well within 100 nanoseconds

eLoran was proven in field trials to be a successful backup to GPS timing in a Wide

Area Multilateration (WAM) aviation application, providing equivalent performance to GPS

Additional aviation testing is ongoing, with plans underway to demonstrate precise

time synchronization, Loran Data Channel (LDC) communication, and compass (heading) applications in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and General Aviation aircraft in January 2017

eLoran in Smart Grid application Proofs-of-Concept are planned for Feb/March 2017

Evaluate eLoran as a WAM Timing Source

Leaders in what’s now. Innovators of what’s next.

During normal operations, WAM radio stations use GPS for timing

In the event of a GPS failure: Some WAM radio stations are equipped with high precision external timing

sources (e.g., rubidium clocks, cesium clocks) Other WAM radio stations have no external timing source, but timing errors can

be compensated for by the MLAT Server using an operational “reftran” mode In reftran mode, the MLAT Server uses reference transmissions from

neighboring radio stations and reference timestamps from radio stations with external timing sources to calculate and compensate for timing drift

While use of external timing sources is very effective, high precision atomic clocks

are very expensive

eLoran timing service has been identified as an alternative to using expensive atomic clocks

eLoran receivers are an order of magnitude less costly than cesium clocks

Harris currently provides WAM service for Air Traffic Control (ATC) in a subset of ADS-B service volumes using networks of WAM radio stations

Aircraft transmissions are received by a network of radio sites An independent determination of the aircraft position can be achieved through

WAM, given the locations of the radio sites, but relative timing among all radios must be precise (± 30 ns @ 95%) to meet position accuracy requirements
