powered by SwimAmerica™Mason Community Center is proud to feature the Mason Swim Academy, presenting learn-to-swim instruction based on a proven lesson program developed by SwimAmerica™. Students will be taught by certified coaches as they progress through ten stations of competency.

The techniques for developing good swimming skills are the same whether your goal is to increase safety around water, enjoy better fitness and health, increase opportunities for recreation, or compete by joining a swim team. The SwimAmerica format was developed by experienced Olympic coaches and is offered in cooperation with the Mason Manta Rays swim team, one of the top swim teams of its size in the country. Let the team’s experience help you or your child become a competent swimmer even if you do not expect to swim competitively.

Group swim lessons are for children 3 to 17 years old. Adults interested in swim lessons are invited to register for private or semi-private swim lessons. All lessons are held in the Leisure Pool unless otherwise noted.

6 week sessions: 11/5 – 12/22Please note that our fall/winter lessons meet 6 times. (No lessons Thanksgiving week.)

The Healthy HomeCreate a healthy home environment and protect your family from an increasingly toxic world. Dangerous toxins abound in the air we breathe, the food and water we consume, and even in the very place we are supposed to be safe from harm: our homes. The decline in children’s health coincides with a rise in the four A’s (Allergies, Asthma, ADHD, and Autism), and many new diseases such as IBS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Fibromyalgia are attributed to environmental causes. Join eco-consultant Laurie Mitroff to gain a better understanding of the toxins in your environment, and learn easy and practical steps for creating a greener nest for you and your family.

Enjoy The Journey A fitness tip from Richard Back, Personal Trainer at Mason Community Center

Goals are not the most important aspect of your fitness training. Enjoying the journey to reach those goals is.

If you enjoy the workouts with your heart pounding in your chest and your legs quivering from exertion, then you will stay the course. You will continue your journey to a healthier, more fit life when you enjoy the journey.

If, however, you set a goal of 100 pushups, 50 burpees, 25 pull-ups, or a marathon—and dread the effort and commitment it takes to achieve those goals, your likelihood of success is diminished.

The journey is the goal. Your passion for the endeavor is its own reward. No goal required!

Jerry Garcia sang, “There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night, and if you go, no one may follow; that path is for your steps alone.”

Enjoy the journey!

Fall is a Great Time for GolfA tip from Andy Horn, golf pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island

Playing golf in fall or winter conditions calls for some adjustment in technique and strategy.

Cold weather dictates that you warm up and stretch more than usual before the round. Pay particular attention to stretching your back muscles so a full turn can be made. When wearing extra layers of clothing, your swing will tend to shorten. This, coupled with playing a cold golf ball, requires that you take more club to reach the desired distance. Do not be afraid to take an extra club.

Practice your short game before you go out, also. During the off season, greens could be running a little slower, so you may need to hit your pitch or putt harder.

This is a great time to play, so take advantage of the season and dress for the conditions. Have fun!

While you are running, do your knees hurt? Feeling sharp pain in your shins? Having discomfort in your heel(s)? If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, you are not alone. These three ailments are some of the most common topics of pain amongst runners. Knowing what is causing your pain will make the process of healing and preventing further injury smoother.

SHin PAin: This is what is referred to as “shin splints.” This pain can be anywhere from dull, sharp, or excruciating. Although there can be several causes for this type of pain, the most common seems to be either being in the wrong pair of shoes—or being in the right pair that has worn down and is no longer doing its job. If you have a flat foot, this means that your arch collapses. You need to be fitted for a pair of shoes that has a good amount of arch support so that your arch does not collapse when you run. Icing your shins and taking Ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation are the most common ways to treat shin splints. Taking a week or two off from run-ning and switching to swimming, biking, or the elliptical will also help to reduce the stress of impact on your shins and give the inflammation time reduce.

knee PAin: There are many tendons and ligaments within the knee, which means many different types and causes of pain. The most common is a sharp or dull pain just below the kneecap and above the top of your shins. Typically, this ends up being tendonitis of the knee. The tricky thing about tendons is they make you think you are healed, and then the pain will strike out of nowhere! This is because as you move, the tendon will “warm up” and loosen. You may start to feel better as your workout goes on because the tendon is mov-ing. While it is moving, it’s rubbing against other parts of your body, causing friction and essentially, inflammation. The pain typically becomes greater once you have stopped moving and then try to start again. In the short time you have stopped, the tendon has already begun to tighten again and the amount of inflammation has become greater due to the friction with other parts of your body. To help heal this, you can ice and take Ibuprofen to reduce swelling and inflammation. To prevent this from getting worse and having to take extended time off to heal, you can purchase a band to go around the lower portion of your knee. The band will keep the tendon in

place while you move through the day and prevent that fric-tion that is causing inflammation!

HeeL PAin: This heel pain can be first thing in the morning when you get out of bed, while you are walking, while you are running, or all three. We most commonly find this to be planter fasciitis. This happens when the ligament known as the plantar fascia becomes strained or inflamed. Since this is the ligament that connects from your heel to your toes, the strain can come from a number of things. If you have high arches or flat fleet and you are not supported in the shoes you are wearing, a strain can occur. This can also happen from a tight Achilles tendon or a tight calve muscle. To get rid of this pain, it is most effective to take time off and give your foot a rest. You can also ice the area and take Ibuprofen to reduce the swelling. Adding in toe and calve stretches can also help. Some will say that adding a gel heel cup to your shoe will provide more of an immediate relief during the healing process, although this will not heal the injury itself. A new, properly fitting pair of shoes should be your first step!

A new and properly fitting pair of shoes, bands for your ten-dons, and gel heel cups can all be found at Buckeye Running Company. Stop by the Symbiosis store at Mason Community Center to learn more about our store.
