What is Logotherapy?
Logotherapy is Dr Viktor Frankl’s school of thought. Dr Frankl is the famous author of Man’s Search for Meaning , a book on his triumphant survival of the Nazi concentration and death camps. Logotherapy is both a philosophy of life and a method employed in psychotherapy and counselling.
Logos is Greek for “meaning”. Logotherapy literally means “to heal through meaning”. Meaning in life is found on a spiritual level of being. Frankl contended that, as human beings, we are essentially spiritual creatures. We seek for meaning in life. Only if we live with a sense of meaning, purpose, and destiny in life, do we feel complete.
Searching for Life’s Purpose
We need to live on a higher plane of being than that of mere existence and the mindless struggle with the complex problems of human existence. If we miss the experience of this higher dimension in life we can become overwhelmed by physical and psychological afflictions.
Difficult or unhappy circumstances then become too much to bear. We can sink into a state of meaninglessness and despair. We need to feel called in life. We need to feel that our lives are meant to be, and that we have a life’s vocation, something unique and special to give to the world. We want to feel that our lives make a difference, that we add something of value to the lives of others, and that we are needed.
This is what gives us a deep sense of self-worth – a conviction that we are loved for who we are. With such a conviction, everything changes and takes on new meaning. We have a task (or mission) in life! It is here that logotherapy has the most powerful effect on our lives, since it challenges us with responsibility – a state of active and committed involvement in life.
The Essence of Human Existence
Frankl maintained that responsibleness is the essence of human existence. We have something or someone to live for, a cause to serve, a mission to fulfil. We can rise to any challenge for the sake of something more than ourselves. We can overcome any difficulty, face up to any problem, and bear every distress, hardship and pain.
It is in this regard that logotherapy is the most positive of all therapies, because it addresses the negative and tragic issues of life – not as lamentable afflictions we are all doomed to suffer, but as tasks we are challenged to embrace and overcome in a spiritually mature and victorious way for the sake of some higher purpose in life.
This is how we find ourselves, and become what we have been created to be. It is how we grow in human stature and how we fulfil our unique and
commissioned destinies in life. It is how we fulfil our life’s vocation. In becoming what we are meant to be, we enjoy, in ever greater measure, a sense of harmony and inner peace. We are no longer the victims of the self-inflictions of insecurity and helplessness, nor are we overwhelmed by feelings of inferiority and a lack of self-worth. Instead, we live in an inspired and goal-directed way.
Our happiness is no longer fleeting. The joys of life are ours, without anything or anybody capable of spoiling or taking it away from us! By living in this way, we experience life in its fullness. This is what Frankl meant by the unconditional meaningfulness of life. Each and every life can be meaningful if the call to take responsible control of it is answered.

A Complement to Psychotherapy and Counselling
Mental health and emotional well-being, in this more optimal sense of the word, makes logotherapy a most necessary complement to other schools or methods of psychotherapy and counselling. Logotherapy completes the picture! Clinical psychologists, professional counsellors, social workers, trauma and lay counsellors have all reported that clients they have worked with, sometimes for years, underwent a dramatic and profound change after a logotherapeutic approach was employed in therapy and counselling.
The Will-to-Meaning
Viktor Frankl, the father of logotherapy, contended that The Will-to-Meaning is the deepest and most fundamental motivation of every person. This has proven to be true. There is no greater healing possible than healing through meaning!
Logotherapy, as a philosophy of life or as a life orientation, and as the very art of meaningful living, has far greater ramifications than therapy and counselling. Logotherapy speaks to everyone, in every situation, and at any time. Our world is in need of healing. We need to find meaning and purpose in life, and to be freed from of a state of victimisation. We need to be lifted out of the afflictions and bondages of a savage or sub-human existence, which has become the most urgent need of our times.
Abraham Maslow, the well-known humanistic psychologist, summed it up:
“Without the Transpersonal and the Transcendent, we become apathetic, nihilistic, sick and violent. We need something bigger than we are to be awed by and commit ourselves to.”
There is indisputable value in training any person, layman or mental health professional, first in finding greater meaning in their own lives, and by way of example, assisting others to do the same. Our courses in logotherapy offer such training!
Logotherapy Courses
Training in logotherapy is offered by the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy South Africa (VFISA) in conjunction with the Unisa Centre for Applied Psychology (UCAP).
There are four courses on offer:
1. Introductory Course in Logotherapy 2. Intermediate Course in Logotherapy 3. Advanced Course in Logotherapy 4. Train-the-Trainer/Diplomate Course in Logotherapy

1. Introductory Course in Logotherapy
The Introductory Course is a single-semester distance learning course. The course is open to any person, regardless of background or training, with the accent being on personal enrichment and spiritual growth through the study of the basic principles of logotherapy.
An in-depth grasp of these principles as they operate in our lives, and in the lives of others, is fundamental to the practice of logotherapy in a professional sense. This is where the training in logotherapy starts and this is where it ends: with you! Logotherapy deals with the fundamentals of optimal living, with being human in the most optimal sense of the word. The more you understand what life is all about, and the more you respond to the unique tasks, opportunities and responsibilities your life presents to you, the greater your growth as a person, and the greater your skill and impact as a logotherapist.
The Introductory Course will give you:
● Knowledge of the basic principles of logotherapy. ● An in-depth grasp of these principles as they operate in your life and in the lives of others. ● Sharper awareness of life's opportunities and responsibilities.
Student requirements:
● Completion of an assignment and the compilation of a portfolio of tasks based on the prescribed books for this course.
● Attendance of a four-day workshop at the end of the course. ● A written examination on the last day of the workshop. ● A pass rate of 50% average for the assignment, portfolio and examination. We will, however, pass
those students who have proven to have tried their best.
These prescribed books are sent to you after you register for the course:
Frankl, Viktor: Man’s Search for Meaning . This is the riveting story of the founder of logotherapy, Viktor Frankl, and his story of suffering and triumph.
Shantall, Teria: The Quest for Destiny . This book explores the principles of logotherapy in real life, in counselling, and in psychotherapy.
The course fee is R5,500. Successful candidates can then enrol in the Intermediate Course in Logotherapy to continue their training.
Please note that fees may be subject to change. Visit our website at www.vfisa.co.za/courses for the latest information.

2. Intermediate Course in Logotherapy
The Intermediate Course is a single-semester distance learning course. The course is designed for those in the helping professions, and/or for anyone wishing to enhance their interpersonal skills in dealing with and assisting others.
The course is aimed at developing the basic skills needed to use logotherapeutic methods and techniques, and to enhance the skills of course participants coming from various fields and backgrounds.
The main aim is to assist participants in developing a more holistic view of the people they work and interact with. This aim includes not only physical, psychological and social issues, but also the spiritual quest for meaning and purpose in life. People, seeking the assistance of professionals in the helping professions, often complain of being treated like objects or as helpless victims of their problems and circumstances.
Neglect of their spiritual quest for meaning and purpose in their lives often serves to exacerbate instead of alleviate their suffering, problems, and difficulties. Viktor Frankl, the founder of logotherapy, diagnosed a new type of neurosis, called noögenic neurosis, that is marked by existential emptiness and a sense of futility, purposelessness and meaninglessness. These are the direct results of overlooking, and thereby failing to foster, human spirituality, values and meaning. Equipping participants with a greater meaning orientation greatly contributes to the mental well-being of the clients they work with, or others they seek to serve.
Student requirements:
● Completion of an assignment and the compilation of a portfolio of self-tasks based on the prescribed books for this course.
● Conducting and transcribing a logotherapy session with a client or a friend that is to be brought to the workshop for supervision and discussion.
● Attendance of a five-day workshop at the end of the course. ● A written examination on the last day of the workshop. ● A pass rate of 50% average for the assignment, portfolio and examination. We will, however, pass
those students who have proven to have tried their best.
These prescribed books are sent to you after you register for the course:
Frankl, Viktor: The Will to Meaning
Shantall, Teria: The Quest for Destiny (second half)

3. Advanced Course in Logotherapy
The Advanced Course is a one-year course with a full day meeting once a month over a period of ten months. A distance teaching option is available. Attendance of workshops at the end of February and June, plus being present for examination sessions at the end of the course, are compulsory.
The Advanced Course is offered to students on two tracks:
Clinical track. This is for students who have some training and experience in counselling and who desire to become competent as counsellors in the field of logotherapy. An available client base is another requirement for students on this track.
Research and educational track. This is for students who have no counselling background and do not have a client base to draw from, and whose primary responsibilities will not include the clinical application of logotherapy. These students may seek to be researchers, teachers of logotherapy and/or workshop presenters in logotherapy in the corporate world, the educational or health field, or other contexts.
The educational team's commitment includes:
● Supervision of transcribed and presented sessions conducted by students on the clinical track. ● Supervision of research or workshop projects of students on the research and educational track. ● Plenary sessions on logotherapeutic issues, particularly relating to the application of logotherapy in
clinical practice, research and workshops. In the case of distance teaching students, teaching material will be made available over the Internet.
● Marking and feedback of logotasks based on the prescribed books. ● Conducting an oral examination for the clinical track and evaluation of the examination project
(workshop) for the research and educational track.
Student requirements:
● The successful completion of both the Introductory and Intermediate Courses. ● 90% attendance of the 10 monthly meetings. In the case of distance learning students, interaction
with supervisors will take place via the Internet. ● Completion of logotasks based on the prescribed books that, together with the transcribed and
supervised logotherapy sessions or research or workshop project, are to be bound together as a portfolio of work for this course.
● Each participant will present the required sessions, conducted with clients, in a transcribed form for supervision and discussion (clinical track), or report on the progress of their research or workshop projects (research and educational track).
These prescribed books are sent to you after you register for the course:
Frankl, Viktor: Man’s Search for Ultimate Meaning
Frankl, Viktor: The Doctor and the Soul
Shantall, Teria: Life’s Meaning in the Face of Suffering
The course fee is R13,590. Successful candidates can apply to be accepted for the Train-the-Trainer or Diplomate Course which will then necessitate a further year of training.

Conclusion
Participants in our courses can exit at any level, depending on their needs and circumstances. The Introductory Course is for personal enrichment and spiritual growth, and may suit the needs of those participants wanting nothing more than this from a study of logotherapy.
The Intermediate Course aims to enhance the interaction with clients of those in the health professions, or those involved in welfare work of any kind. Participants seeking only such enhancement of the quality of their work may want to advance no further than the intermediate level.
The successful completion of the Advanced Course enables students to use logotherapy, its methods and techniques, within the framework of their own particular professions, or as logotherapy counsellors (if the clinical track is followed), or to become researchers or present workshops in logotherapy (if the research and educational track is followed). Most participants exit at this level.
Those who want to become even more professional and expert in the field of logotherapy complete the last and final stretch of our training, namely the Train-the-Trainer/Diplomate Course. The clinical track of this course is limited to registered professionals who aim to set up practice as professional logotherapists and/or to become clinical trainers in logotherapy. The research and educational track of this course is also open to non-professionals wanting to use the expertise they have gained in logotherapy for further research or as presenters of workshops in the corporate world, the community, or to the public in general, or as trainers in research in logotherapy.
The aim of the Viktor Frankl Institute of South Africa is to serve whatever needs prospective participants may have. We are here to enhance the quality of life for everyone in every sector of our South African society!
