    Thermal & fire properties

    Thermal resistance

Insulated Kingspan sandwich panels with cores

made of rigid polyurethane foam show excellent and

almost constant thermal insulation properties over their

    full service life.

Structural and thermal specification of the panel

    joints:

when correctly installed, the system guarantees

complete gas and vapour tight seal (thus enabling

the system to be used in rooms with controlled

    atmospheres)

ensures the absence of air gaps in the panel

    structure

reduces thermal loss (gain), thus cutting down the

operational costs of the cooling process.

The thermal insulation and structural properties

and the wide range of panel thicknesses enables the

panels to be used for all types of applications (chill,

deep-freeze and food processing) which require

a controlled temperature environment (box in box

    assembly).

On buildings with external roof and wall envelope,

the exterior face of the panels are exposed to direct

sunlight especially during the summer season.

Therefore the temperature of the panel surface rises

and it can reach between 55 C to 80 C dependent

on the colour of the panel. This causes a large heat

gradient between the exterior and interior face of the

panel, which must be taken into account in the thermal

design of the building. Such a large heat gradient also

implies significant stress within the sandwich panel,

which must be taken into account when designing the

load-bearing structure of the panel. It is recommended

that the designer seeks professional advice from

Kingspan when designing such a building.

The processes of cooling or thawing large amounts

of food stored in air-tight rooms causes considerable

changes in pressure due to the expansion/contraction

of the inner atmosphere. Such changes can cause

damage or, with self-contained boxes, even the

collapse of the insulated box system.

Therefore, especially with buildings run at negative

    temperatures, compensatory pressure valves have

to be installed into the wall or ceiling of the jacket.

The dimensions and number of the valves shall be

    determined by a specialist designer.

    Fire resistance

Evaluation of thermal insulating panels from

the point of view of their flammability

Buildings fitted with Kingspan panels with

polyurethane foam cores (C3 class of flammability)

have been evaluated from the point of view of fire

and are classified as structures of the D3 type

(EN 13501-1). D3 type structures are those which

affect fire intensity during the specified fire-resistance

    time.

    Evaluation of fire resistance

The fire resistance values of Kingspan insulating

panels were acquired by testing performed in

accordance with the relevant EN and national

standards. According to the fire resistance standardsthe limiting states of fire resistance for individual

    structures are defined as follows:

    Fire resistance limiting states

    R Bearing capacity

    E Structural integrity

    IInsulating abilities limiting temperatures on

    non-heated surface

WInsulating abilities limiting the radiation of heat

    from non-heated side

    M Resistance to mechanical defects

These fire resistance limiting states are

applicable to all structures featuring separated fire

    zones.

    1. Non-supporting enclosure walls are evaluated as

    follows:

Inside walls surfaces using the E+W criteria

    (integrity and heat radiation)

Outside walls surfaces using the E+I criteria

    (integrity and insulation)

    2. Internal non-supporting fire-resistant walls are

evaluated using the E+I criteria (integrity and

    insulation)

    3. Roof paneling and ceilings are normally assessed

on their inside surfaces using the R+E+I criteria

(bearing, integrity, insulation). If the roof covering is

not designed as a structural member, it is assessed

    using the E+I criteria only.

    Further evaluation criteria

The panels were further evaluated from the followingpoints of view:

fire spreading through the roof no fire spreads

    through the panels

flame spreading on the surface of building

materials no flame spread on the panel surface

panels KS1000 TC, DC, DF, RW in accordance with

the requirements of flame propagation tests

dripping and falling of burning and non-burning

substances from the panels substances are

neither dripping nor falling from the panels

Evaluation by insurance companiesProperty insurance companies class Kingspan

panels to be fire safe. The fire resistance of non-

supporting enclosure walls is tested in accordance

with standard EN 1364-1. The purpose of this test is

to define the ability of the sample to resist fire spread

from one side to the other.

The fire resistance of non-supporting enclosure

walls is defined in conditions of external and internal

fire loading, in accordance with standards EN 1363-1,

EN 1363-2, EN 1364-3 and EN 1364-4: Suspension

walls and entire assemblies and parts of assemblies.

The roof sheathing is evaluated from the upper(external) side in accordance with other tests in order

to define fire spread through the roof. The purpose of

these tests is to determine whether roof sheathing of

a specified slope, external thermal load and air flow

    spreads fire or not:

    a) in a fire-hazardous area test A

    b) out of the fire-hazardous area test B

Fire resistance of the lower (internal) side of roof

sheathing is tested in accordance with EN 1365-2:

Fire resistance of supporting structures, Part 2:

    Ceilings and Roofs.

The designated fire resistance of a building is based

    on tests or calculations.

Testing of insulating panels for flame

spread on the surface of buildingmaterials

The images on the right show the effect of a high

intensity propane torch on exposed PIR after the

metal facings have been removed. The propane torch

generates a temperature of over 1000 C. The images

show the effect after 30 minutes exposure and are

a good demonstration of how the PIR forms a strong

carbonaceous char that protects the core foam from

ignition. When the burner is removed after 30 minutes

    the core self extinguishes.

The section cut through the thickness of the panel

after 30 minutes exposure shows that the char occurs

only in the area of direct flame impingement and

    there is no fire propagation.

Testing of thermal insulating panels fordripping and falling

Horizontal sandwich panels with a polyurethane

foam core, which are to be laid on roofs, were tested

in accordance with the latest fire safety regulations.

Evaluation of dripping of material from the panels

was made. The result was that no dripping or falling,

burning or non-burning material was observed.

Statutory fire safety legislation is primarily

concerned with the protection of people from

    death or injury in fire.

However, a fire that causes no physical injuries

can still have potentially devastating effects on the

viability of a business in terms of:

    loss of stock

    direct damage to building

    lost customers

    loss of records

    lost production

    damage to public image

Therefore, where a fire has potential to have

a substantial impact on the viability of a business or

cause large financial losses, consideration should

be given to additional fire protection measures over

and above those necessary to satisfy the minimum

    statutory requirements. Insurance premium discounts

may be available where a high standard of fire

    protection is provided.

In some cases insurance cover may not be readily

available unless fire protection measures exceed theminimum requirements of building regulations.

The propane torch test demonstrates that PIR does

not ignite and the exposed core does not present a

    fire hazard

Char occurs only in the area of direct flame

impingement and there is no fire propagation.

Minimal fire load contribution from the core material.

No spread of flame inside the panel between the

    surface skins.

    Material Specification

    Steel Substrate Options

The steel used for the skin of the panels conformsto EN 10147 and has a guaranteed minimum yield

    strength of 320 MPa.

Hot-dip zinc coated with a total of 275 g/m2of zinc.

This can be finished with a number of coatings

polyester, PVDF, Plastisol and Plastisol Foodsafe.

Galvalloy (hot-dip coated with eutectic alloy of

approx. 95% Zn, 5% Al and other elements) for

    coated steel HPS200 only.

Galvatite (hot-dipped) for coated steel Celestia only.

    Substrate thickness

    External skin: 0.50 0.70 mm

    Internal skin: 0.40 0.60 mm

Other thicknesses can be supplied subject to

    discussion with Kingspan.

    External Coating Options

    Plastisol 150 m Foodsafe

Plastisol 150 m Foodsafe is chemically inert

and safe for continuous contact with unpacked

    foodstuff.

Standard Polyester (PES) The standard surface used for manufacturing

sandwich panels is a 25 micrometre (nominal

thickness) polyester coating system with medium

    term life for worldwide use.

    PVDF

PVDF has a smooth, 25 micrometre (nominal

thickness) coating system which offers excellent

colour stability. The standard colour range includes

metallic silver. Whilst PVDF offers good corrosion

resistance in most environments worldwide, its

durability is generally less than that of HPS 200.

    HPS200 (by Corus)

HPS200 is a premier painted architectural

product, tested in the laboratory and on site in

severe climates, for use worldwide. Its tought,

200 micrometre (nominal thickness) coating system

has the unigue Scintilla finish and is available in

bright or subtle hues, providing architects with an

    wide palette of colours.

    Plastisol 200 m

200 micron Plastisol is a 200 micrometre thick highperformance plastisol coating system with leather

    grain finish.

    Celestia (by Corus)

Celestia is a metallic-finish cladding steel

with 120 micrometre (nominal thickness) high

    performance plastisol coating. The standard

product has a high-performance polyester coating

on the reverse side. The metallic finish captures light

and movement, giving depth and life to cladding

    surface.

Internal Coating Options Steel for the internal surface is coated with

a polyester PES 15 micrometre (nominal thickness)

coating system for standard use. This is a medium

life term system which, being for internal use

only, is independant of the site location external

    environment.

    Plastisol 150 m Foodsafe

Plastisol 150 m Foodsafe is chemically inert

and safe for continuous contact with unpacked

    foodstuff.

Insulation CoreThe standard panel core is made from closed cell

rigid polyurethane foam (PUR) which is CFC and HCFC

    free and meets non-deleterous specifications.

Panel Joint SealingThe panel joints provide excellent thermal

insulation air tightness and comply with the strict

requirements of chill and coldstore plants. The joints

can accommodate upto four types of seals for fire

resistance, air and steam tightness, hygiene saferegulations and for thermal conductivity.

For external cladding application the external panel

joint incorporate an anti-condensation weather strip

which is applied during production or site installation.

KS1000 TC Ceiling Panel Technical Specification

    Notes:

    - The table contains only panel dead load, other dead loads must be considered sepa-

    rately.

    - The allowed sag considered in table values is L/200 for short-time and L/100 for

    long-time effects.

    - Tables also include the condition in which the temperature difference is zero, if this

condition is less favourable than the condition at the temperature gradient specified

    in the header.

    - The figures in these tables were calculated using methods described in European

Recommendations for Sandwich Panels 2000. If other conditions apply, contact

    Kingspan.

    - Temperature is considered a long-term load (i.e. including effects of postforming, if

    these are unfavourable).
