Foreword
Catalogue 2013-14: Crafts in a Contemporary WorldThe Craftmark program, instituted in 2004, is today the largest certification mark for genuine, Indian hand-crafted products. Over the years, we have been able to build “integrity”, “quality” and “cutting edge design” as some of the core values we are synonymous with, evidenced by endorsements from large format global chains like West Elm and Ten Thousand Villages who regularly source our products. Today, we have an artisan network of over 20,000 artisans spanning 20 states of India.
This year’s catalogue showcases some of the recent organizations to join the program and brings together a diverse array of traditional crafts—with a contemporary twist in application. So, phetia-printed fabrics traditionally used for bridal attire have been converted to naturally dyed indigo table and bed linen, the dried gourd vegeta-ble of Meghalaya takes the form of interesting loufa bath products, ceremonial Longpi (black) pottery of Manipur is transformed to a stunning collection of modern tableware, tie-dye techniques used for turbans in Rajasthan become a vibrant collection of quilts, rustic sabai grass baskets from West Bengal morph into elegant storage containers and the kalamkari technique of depicting mythological events in southern India forms interesting decorative items.
While the focus has been on creating products that appeal to contemporary aesthetics and functionality, the core remains the artisan’s skill and technique, linking us to a more textured past, in which creativity and the touch of a human hand enriched the daily experience of life.
We hope you enjoy sourcing from this catalogue. Please write into us with your queries at contact [email protected].
We look forward to hearing from you.
