Suf EmbroiderySuf embroidery is a form of embroidery based on a triangle motif, called a ‘Suf ’. Suf is counted on the warp and weft of the cloth in a surface satin stitch worked from the back. Motifs are never drawn. Each artisan imagines her design, then counts it out—in reverse! This requires an understanding of geometry and keen eyesight. A Suf artisan displays virtuosity in detailing, filling symmetrical patterns with tiny triangles, and accent stitches.

Jat Embroidery Jat embroidery is unique to the Garasia Jat community, pastoralists who originated outside of Kutch in Gujarat. Garasia women stitch an array of geometric patterns in counted work based on cross stitch studded with minute mirrors to completely fill the yokes of their churi, a long gown. This style, displaying comprehension of the structure of fabric, is unique to Kutch and Sindh.

Mutava Embroidery The Mutavas are a small culturally uniquegroup of Muslim herders who inhabit Banni, the desert grassland of northern Kutch. Theexclusive Mutava style comprises of minuterenditions of different local styles: Paako,Khaarek, Haramji and Jat work. Thoughthe technique has many variations, theMutava style is uniformly fine and geometric.

Paako EmbroideryPaako embroidery is a tight square-chain and double-buttonhole stitch embroidery, often with black, slanted satin-stitch outlining. The motifs of Paako, sketched in mud with needles, are primarily floral and generally arranged in symmetrical patterns.

Lambani EmbroideryLambani embroidery is an amalgam of pattern darning, mirror work, cross stitch, and overlaid and quilting stitches with borders of ‘Kangura’ patchwork appliqué done on a base fabric. A distinctive design element is its use of local mud-resist handloom fabric, and mirrors, shells and white ornamental trims.

Rabari Embroidery Rabari embroidery is unique to the nomadic Rabari community of Gujarat. Essential to Rabari embroidery is the use of mirrors in a variety of shapes. Rabaris outline patterns in chain stitch, then decorate them with a regular sequence of mirrors and accent stitches, in different colors.

Bodo WeavesUsing the extra warp method, Bodo women of northeast India weave magical ‘aagor’ or designs named after nature. Designers have worked with the weavers to add new and contemporary design elements to their weaves. The results are beautiful, contemporary handcrafted fabrics that retain the essence of traditional Bodo motifs and weaving techniques.

Hand WeavingProducts are woven on a simple 4 by 6 shaft handloom. The yarn is purchased in dyed form according to the color palette selected for production. The skilled weaver creates distinctive fabrics by controlling the order in which the warp threads are lifted, and varying the tension of the yarn as it is being woven.

Turned Wood ToysLocal craftspeople from Chennapatna in Karnataka make these eco-friendly products with locally available raw materials. The toys are usually made of a soft wood called ‘dudhi’ (milk-wood). The softness and pliability of this particular wood, as well as its light color, make it ideal for turning and lacquering. The artisan shapes and designs the toy by using a lathe. Dry lac is pressed against the item to be lacquered while it is on the lathe. The heat generated by the friction melts the lac onto the toy. Using different colors and yet managing to get a uniform shine on the product requires great skill.

PatchworkPatchwork is a technique of forming a single pattern with different pieces of cloth. Pieces of fabric are applied on top of another base fabric for decorative or functional purposes. Sometimes the background fabric is prepared by joining various shaped fabric swatches (squares, rectangles, various geometric shapes etc) and then on top of this base the appliqué work is done. Festive patchwork textiles created for special occasions are found all across India, with each region using distinct styles, shapes and color palettes to create decorative designs.

Coconut ProductsThese products are made from “old and unyielding” coconut trees. The characteristic feature of the coconut wood is its unique texture of dots and grains which comes from the mineral deposits on the capillary walls of the tree. The craft products are made using the bark and pulp of the tree and are individually handcrafted using a chisel, depending on the design, the size and shape of the article. Every article consists of a dark side and a light side. This is because the dark side is towards the bark and the light side is towards the pulp. The articles made are all eco-friendly, natural and non-toxic, and the wood is also termite proof.

KottansThis type of basket weaving is unique to Chettinad in southern Tamil Nadu. To braid the baskets, palm tree leaves are harvested. Each meter-wide leaf spreads out like a fan and is dried for five to six days before being cut with a knife into evenly thin strips. The strips are hand-dyed in batches and hung out to dry, then woven. Kottans are woven in two ways: entirely by hand, or by using the feet as well. For a finer, more impeccable finish, both hands and feet are used, gripping the base of the basket with the feet and weaving it from the base up.

Tibetan Wool WeavesThese products are made from organic Tibetan sheep wool. The wool is hand spun, hand woven and naturally dyed. This product promotes and preserves livelihoods of shepherds, spinners, dyers and weavers and therefore supports the continuation of traditional skills in the Kumaun hills. The uniqueness of this wool is in its texture; it becomes softer as you wear it and is long-lasting. This product generates wages in the villages at all stages of its processing.

Banana FiberThe dry bark of the banana plant called ‘shorba’ is used as the raw material for the banana fiber products. ‘Shorba’, is removed from the plant and then segregated into different categories - into white, brown and darker shades of brown. Segregated ‘shorba’ is soaked in water for five minutes to make it soft and easy to work with. It is then sliced to make a rope. The rope is again segregated according to its thickness and dyed in different colors. The artisans choose the requisite quality of rope and begin crafting the product.

Panja Durrie WeavingThe craft gets its name from a metallic claw-like tool called ‘panja’ in the local dialect, used to beat and set the threads in the warp. The weavers keep the design in front of them (either a graph or a sample) while weaving the first few articles of that design. After a while, when they have memorized the pattern, the work becomes faster. They pull a fixed number of warp threads, depending on the design, towards themselves and take the small bundle of weft across the warp threads to fill the gap longitudinally. Once one row of weft is completed, the weavers beat it to settle it tightly into the warp by using the panja. This locks the weft between the two layers of warp, providing more strength and durability to the durrie.

Kantha EmbroideryThis is a distinctive style of embroidery where meticulous running-stitches transform the fabric into extraordinarily beautiful creations. The intricate geometry of the design and the near absence of folk motifs continue to be a notable feature of Muslim Kantha-making traditions of Murshidabad in Bengal.
