Rosh Hashanah is always the First of Tishrei; Passover is always the Fifteenth of Nissan; Hanukkah is always the Twenty-fifth of Kislev. It’s not Hanukkah that’s late, December is early! A few years ago Americans rejoiced as we celebrated Thanksgivukkah – when Thanks- giving and Hanukkah coincided; this year we will have the opportunity to celebrate HanNew Years- ukkah (not quite as catchy, I know) because New Year’s 2017 is during the week of Hanukkah. And, believe it or not, there is actually a ready- made link between the two. First, like any winter celebration in the Northern Hemisphere, New Year’s (like Christmas and Hanukkah itself) is a celebration of light in a time of darkness. But there is an even deeper New Year’s connection to Hanukkah. Of course we celebrate our New Year at Rosh Hashanah, and we say the gates of forgiveness close at the end of Yom Kippur, this is why the final service is called Ne’ilah – closing. But, according to our Sages of Blessed Memory, the gates actually stay open until Hoshanah Rabbah – the final day of Sukkot. We extend our New Year’s season just a little bit longer… And then the hasidic rebbes come around, look at the matter and say, No the gates don’t close at Hoshanah Rabbah, the gates close at… Hanukkah! Why? Because Hanukkah is the time of the rededication of the Temple and a rededication of ourselves to God and Torah. And that’s what we do at the secular New Year – make resolutions of how we can do better in our lives and in the world. A monthly tour through the Siddur:

the meaning, significance, customs, laws,

history and choreography of prayer

Ye’hi khavod hashem l’olam – an anthology of psalms – This is an example of what is very likely one of the earliest additions

to the set liturgical tradition. Rather than crafted poetic original writing, what we have here is a collection of various psalms,

individual verses from a total of around a dozen sources. As a unit, the collection serves as a meditation on God’s compassion,

control of Creation and the eternal promise of redemption. It also serves as a separation between the middle section of Pesukei

D’Zimra and its final section which, according to some rabbinic opinions, may have comprised – at least in part – the original

Pesukei D’Zimra for what the Talmud refers to as the early pious ones.

Ongoing CBI Events

Meet the Midrash

Out of the texts of the Torah, the Rabbis created teachings bringing deeper meanings to the wisdom of the Jewish

people known as Midrash. Each week we will explore some of these teachings based on the weekly Torah portion.

We will gain not only an understanding of what the Rabbis were teaching, but how and why they were able to offer

these teachings. While there are many compilations of Midrash from different periods in Jewish history, we will

focus our studies on Midrash Rabbah. Wednesdays 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm

Hazak

Hazak is a group of empty nesters who meet monthly for good food and conversation at local restaurants. The group

usually meets the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 pm, barring holiday conflicts. Anyone who is interested can

be added to the email list. Contact Sue Lerner.

Hasidishe Kiddushled by Rabbi Goldstein

Fill your heart and soul with Torah (and schnapps...) and join together to learn Hasidic thought and wisdom on parashat

ha'shavu’a. Last Shabbat of each month at 12:30 pm.

Living Torah with Rabbi Justin Goldstein

Timeless teachings for walking in the world. Start your day off with inspired learning and meaningful conversations.

Relevant and insightful lessons from the wellspring of Jewish wisdom. All are welcome, no experience necessary.

Capital Campaign Update

As of November 1, 2016, CBI has secured pledges of nearly $750,000 primarily from within our membership. During

the High Holidays Rabbi Justin was approached by an anonymous donor from CBI who has offered to match up to

$100,000 of new pledges and donations from CBI members who have already made a pledge or a gift to the campaign.

The idea of this matching gift is to encourage members to dig a bit deeper for this campaign. The deadline for these

new pledges is December 31st, 2016. If our membership is able to seize on this incredible matching opportunity, we

could raise an additional $200,000 in campaign funds bringing us very close to our $1 million goal. This will certainly

enable our synagogue to get started on the work at hand and break ground this coming Spring 2017. We know that not

everybody will be able to dig any deeper as many have already pledged quite generously, but every little bit will help

reach the maximum match. Please contact the synagogue office or Mike Weizman if you are able to participate in this

match effort before year end.

Boray Perie HagafenBy: Ira Naiman

Call the FBI! Call the Secret Service and CIA! It seems Value

Man’s email server was hacked. Obviously the work of

Edward Schmoe-Den, now residing in Russia, who sent it to

VinoLeaks. Evidently he was outraged that Value Man

recommended some wines (published in the CBI HaShofar)

to the Democratic Party candidates a few months ago. A

dastardly deed done to Value Man, but Value Man will

persevere by strengthening the firewalls, stiffening the virus

blockers and encoding data in Yiddish (I don’t know what all

that means, but it sounds official).

Ingles is my primary wine destination, but now that my

internet and server is secure, we can explore a wine site I use

called Wines Till Sold Out (wtso.com). This site features one

wine at a time, until it’s sold out. They then feature another.

WTSO receives wine from manufacturers, of all price ranges,

who want to sell their stock quickly at a discount. By using a

discerning eye, you can get wine for half price or less. Keep

in mind these wines are originally priced above (often way

above) Value Man’s range (preferably $10 or less), but

sometimes come down close. Also these are wines you will

not find in grocery stores and often not in Asheville wine

stores either. They can be special, unusual, low volume

products. It can be addicting to keep watching your computer

or smart phone screen to see what’s being offered (disclaimer:

I do not have any financial interest in or familial involvement

with this company).

Let’s look at two of Value Man’s recent acquisitions from

wtso.com. First up is Casa Cadaval Padre Pedro Reserva

2012. It comes from Portugal, which is famous for Port wine.

Portugal also makes some wonderful reds. The grapes used

in the Casa Cadaval are Touriga Nacional (the major red

grape of Portugal), Trincadira, Alicante Bouschet and Merlot.

You taste various black fruit, but it’s not strongly fruity, it has

a floral aroma of violets and spice. I feel it has an earthy

element as well. It definitely is different, no doubt due to the

unusual local grapes. My wife and I really like it. Internet

prices are around $30; I got it for $14.99. Definitely a swirl

and sipper.

Next up is Terre da Vino Barolo 2012. This wine is made

from the Nebbiolo grape, which is often considered the King

of the Italian grapes. The Barolo vineyards are in the

northwest section of Italy, the Piedmont, and east of the

French border. There are very strict standards that must be

followed in order to be called Barolo, and there is a hierarchy

of areas. Even in the lesser areas or vineyards, Barolos can

easily start in the $40 range and shoot upwards. When I saw

it for $18.99, I bought several. It has a cherry, rose, leather,

earthly flavor. One thing you will notice is a dry, astringent

feeling in your mouth due to the tannins. In the higher rated

vineyards, these tannins (substances found in the grape skin,

seeds and stems) give the wine the ability to age (and

sometimes have to age to make it drinkable) for 10 years and

more. It’s a very enjoyable wine.

So now we explored another facet of the wine world. Did you

learn something, Vladimir?

Until next time.

Have You Tried Our Dip Jar?As you know, most of our programs are FREE and open to all. The Dip Jar resides on the piano in

the Social Hall alongside a donation jug. It is an easy way to make a $5 contribution to Beth Israel

by inserting your credit or debit card. Or feel free to leave a check or cash in the donation jug.

If you have enjoyed a program at CBI, please make a donation the next time you are in the building

(except on Shabbat).

Have you Tried out our

Web Check Payment System?CBI’s Web Check Payment system is being used by quite a few congregants. Try it out, if you haven’t already. It’s an

easy-to-use, NO FEE way to make any of your payments to CBI – Dues, Bet Sefer, Food Cards (Ingles and Scrips),

or Donations. This is a direct debit from your checking account. You just need your routing number and account number.

There is also a place for a memo entry so that you can indicate the purpose of your donation (in memory of, a particular

fund, etc.). Please make sure to fill in the memo box so that we can allocate your payment correctly.

We have contracted with a third party web check provider for this service. They have all of the necessary security issues

in place to handle sensitive account information data. Beth Israel Web Check Payments Online

Chesed: CBI’s Support NetworkThe Chesed Group is a caring team of congregants who are here for you. Coordi-

nating the energy and abilities of the entire CBI family, we help those in need. We

are not professional caregivers but we are here to help however we can. Here are

some of the activities we can help with:

• Visiting those who are sick • Assembling a minyan for shiva

• Helping set up for a bar mitzvah party • Preparing meals when needed

• Providing transportation • Shopping for the homebound

• Helping those in need find the • And many more services

right resources

But we can’t help unless we know who needs and wants support. So we need you

to tell us. If we can help you with something or if you are aware of someone who

could use some help, please don’t hesitate to call Lee in the CBI office. She will

contact the appropriate member of the Chesed Group. All requests for confiden-

tiality will be completely honored.

Making a donation to the work of the Chesed committee is always welcome. It

will help us help you.
