A 33 year-old man who disappeared after the brutal killing of his two year-old daughter handed himself over to the police on Monday.

It is alleged the suspect from Shotong village went to his 23 year-old girlfriends house at the neighbouring Madibeng village in Bolobedu on Sunday night at about 20:40.

According to the police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, an argument allegedly ensued between the suspect and his girlfriends 42 year-old father.

The suspects then produced a knife and stabbed his girlfriend and her father several times. The two victims fl ed the scene with stab wounds, leaving the toddler in the house, said Brig. Mulaudzi.

Had the suspect not given up I would have used all the resources available at my disposal and exhaust all avenues in endeavours to bring the suspect to book, he said.

LANDOWNERS have until the end of July to burn fi re breaks. As of August 1 no fi res are allowed.

The Letaba Fire Protection Associations aerial resources arrive on June 1. These include a Spotter aeroplane fl own by pilot Siem Venter and a Bell Huey Helicopter fl own by pilot Paul Bester. According to Trevor Phillips, chairperson of the Letaba FPA, all predictions are that we are in for a busy fi re season because of a good rain season and a heavy fuel build-up over the last couple of years. Paid-up members of the Letaba FPA may use the Tzaneen Working On Fire team for free to help with fi re breaks on their farm. This is a very popular service and the team is fully booked each year to assist landowners. They also visit schools for fi re awareness

programs and assist on members of the Associations farm when there are run-away fi res. This is a fi rst come fi rst serve service.

There are approximately 24 Working on Fire teams in Limpopo and it includes the Mamabolo team up in Haenertsburg and two Sekororo teams. Important information regarding the Working on Fire team which each landowner should know: the crew leader is in charge of the team. You can identify the crew leader by the red band around their arm. The truck driver has a blue band around its arm. The crews uniform is yellow, but new recruits wear blue overalls.

THE Southern African Macadamia Growers Association (SAMAC) will host its annual Macadamia Research Symposium this year again at Fairview River Lodge in Tzaneen on June 4.

The event always draws considerable local and international interest.

This Symposium serves as a forum for the sharing of research carried out in orchard practices, pest and disease management and maintenance of nut quality after harvest.

Researchers, growers, and processors will get great value in the information shared, but will also establish valuable networks.

The following SAMAC funded research projects will be presented at the Symposium:

Selection and evaluation of new cultivars in macadamiasThe Macadamia Stinkbug Control Program-integrated

management of stinkbugsDetermination of appropriate storage protocols for

macadamia kernel and development of guidelines for setting sell-by dates

Development of a strategy to reduce the incidence of onion ring in macadamias

Semi-commercial evaluation of phosphonate applications through the irrigation system to reduce Phytophtora root rot and stem cankers

Calibrating irrigation norms for optimal irrigation in macadamias

Development of synthetic pheromones for the control of

the two-spotted stinkbugNew approaches to demonstrating and quantifying

biological control of stinkbugs by bats in macadamia orchards

A web-based stinkbug monitoring systemSAMAC is also fortunate this year to have an

international researcher presenting at the symposium.Dr Rob Morisson from the USDA-ARS was invited by

the stinkbug committee to come and assist us in fi nding a pheromone for the control of the two-spotted stinkbug.

The title of his presentation is: Field and landscape distribution of insects in agriculture.

Prospects for their management through the use of semiochemicals. Rob will also take part in the stinkbug workshop on 5 June, the day after the symposium.

This will be a research symposium, thus the focus will be on technical research

The research projects are selected annually with the idea of addressing the needs of growers on the production of macadamias, but also to be in line with current and future market needs of the Southern African Macadamia Industry.

It is therefore essential to look beyond our borders and collaborate with other macadamia producing countries to fi nd solutions to problems which currently hamper our industry (Muller, 2009).

The annual research symposium provides a platform to do this for the future benefi t of our industry.

Thanks for excellent serviceDaphne Bender of Tzaneen writes:

I would like to publicly congratulate The Coach House for the fantastic wedding that they hosted for the Bender and Blatherwick families on 3May 3.

Congratulations to Dean, Sam and their team for pulling out all the stops! Everything was ready and available, as promised, days before, giving the decorators time to put up drapes etc without getting into a panic.

The service on the day, starting with the cheese and wine at the pool, was excellent and Dean kept a keen eye until the end (late, very late!). The food was delicious, well presented and well planned as far as quantities went.

We were given a special rate for our visitors so most stayed for 2 nights, ending with a big family breakfast on the Sunday. The feedback from my family was all positive. My mom particularly loved the fi re in her room! (fi replace)

Thank you Dean and Coach House for a job well done.

WEDDING BELLS: Charlie Bender, son of Daphne and Charlie Bender married Tracy Blatherwick, daughter of Grace and Patrick on May 3 Catholic Church Tzaneen.

CLEAN HANDS: Learn to wash hands fi ve mes a day

LOOK AT ME: The aim was to promote hands hygiene

CLINIX Phalaborwa Private Hospital in partnership with Lifebuoy held the school handwashing campaigns in Phalaborwa last week.

The aim of the campaign was to promote hand hygiene as a way of preventing illnesses such as colds and fl u which increase learner absenteeism during the winter season.

The two schools selected were Ninakhulu and Lulekani Primary Schools. Representatives of Lifebuoy encouraged the learners to wash their hands fi ve times a day, especially at key occasions such as before handling food, after a visit to the bathroom and when in the shower or bath.

By adopting daily handwash routines one can cut the incidence of these everyday and often preventable illnesses. Lifebuoy not only educated the learners but also the teachers, to run with the 21 day programme where each learner is expected to keep a diary of their handwashing routine.

The campaign is big for our community and we hope to build on this relationship with Lifebuoy and extend it to other schools in our community and surrounding areas said Virnicia Mathebula, the marketing manager of the hospital.

The schools were left with bath soaps, comic books and posters to motivate the learners

Funksie suksesvolDIALOGUE: Melita Pilusa, a CHoiCe Trust dialogue facilitator, engages with a group of farm on gender equality on farms.

CHoiCe Trust brought together 90 farm workers from 30 farm sites for a human rights awareness event at Hlanganani in Letsitele on last Friday.

Held under the theme Equal Rights for All, CHoiCe Trust facilitators engaged farm workers on how to address gender concerns as a key human rights issue.

Through a series of dialogues and discussions, farm workers shared that there were various forms of gender inequality on farms which included stereotypical gender roles and power dynamics that worked to suppress female farm workers. Why do we not see more female tractor drivers or supervisors? asked farm workers

As a way forward it was agreed that CHoiCe would work with the Change Agents present to raise gender awareness further on farms and surrounding villages.

Change Agents are farm workers who have been identifi ed by their peers to become peer educators on their farm sites and have been trained by CHoiCe Trust to ensure that they are able to carry out basic health promotions. These Change Agents are key actors in bringing about behavioural change on farms to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce vulnerability, particularly towards HIV and AIDS. The director of CHoiCe Trust, Nicola Stuart-Thompson said the day included some very positive learnings for both the farm workers and CHoiCe Trust.

As CHoiCe Trust we appreciate what we hear from the farm workers about gender because it informs our approach that we will agree to together, said Stuart-Thompson.

Addressing the participantst, Rebecca Maluleke, the CHoiCe Trust project coordinator of the farms project,

reminded the participants about the importance of their role in enhancing the capacity of all farm workers on health and wellness issues. Maluleke also reminded everyone that the CHoiCe Trust HIV Counselling and Testing tent was there for people to get tested and to know their HIV status. CHoiCe Trust and the farms were joined on the day by various stakeholders including representatives of the Department of Health, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Westfalia and the Catholic Church.

Funding for the event was facilitated by the Foundation for Human Rights, which is funded by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and the European Union under the Sector Budget Support Programme Access to Justice and the Promotion of Constitutional Rights.

PLANES and boats and trains and much, much more...............

On the 15th April a group of students and four teachers left Johannesburg for an extraordinary experience in trendy travel in the country of Thailand. Our guide, Mr. Chalermkiat Kittrakulrat [you can call me Dang] met us at the Suvarnabhumi airport. It was immediately apparent that we were in good hands and were taken to our Eco hotel and met later for our fi rst Thai meal the food was fantastic!

On the 17th we explored, by dragon boat, the Floating Market in hot, humid conditions where we had lunch at a restaurant situated partially on the water. After lunch we left for the Sampran Hotel to attend our Thai cooking class. At this calm, serene oasis we were judged good enough to be awarded certifi cates! The teachers and the Grade 11 boys competed for fi rst place and we had to concede honours to Sammy and his group.

From there we went to MBK, Bangkoks largest shopping mall, and shopped till we dropped. We discovered the night market and lost Lucas and Keith in the backstreets of Bangkok; they eventually found their way back after walking in circles for hours.

Next day found us in the amazing fl ower market with its wonderful sights and scents. We then experienced our next form of transport and the exciting tuk tuk ride, where we were accompanied by a traffi c offi cer, which made us feel like royalty! It must have been a sight; twenty tuk tuks in convoy is rare even in Bangkok. We saw the Emerald Buddha in Wat Pra Kaew, regarded as the holiest place in Thailand with its beautiful, ornate buildings. Our students were stared at as Thai people rarely see visitors from Africa and had to fend off continuous requests for photographs.

Our next form of transport was the night train to Chiang Mai, the largest city in the north and in the mountains. Arriving there, we visited the 309 step temple which turned out to be a breeze for Stanfordians as we are used to steps!! We discovered coconut ice cream and it is delicious. At the Imm Thapae Hotel, we were situated above

a Big Mac, causing a rush for hamburgers. All the accommodation we stayed in was eco-friendly. The Thais are determined to protect what is left but so much is lost and gone already, it only survives in enclaves that are protected.

That evening we attended a Kantoke Dinner in the tribal enclave, sitting on the fl oor and watching the Thai dancers, acrobats and the young hill tribe dancers. They took great pride and joy in their ability to nimbly hop between the moving bamboo poles. Keith proved his mettle as a shopper at the night market; he bought more than anyone else in the group. On Sunday we left for our elephant safari and believe me, the motion of an elephant is unique. Its rather like sitting on the shoulder of a giant. Ox carts were the next mode of transport and we returned to our starting point via bamboo rafts on the river. The North has many hand crafts; visiting the centres showed us that the manufacture of silk is but one of many. The lacquer ware is beautiful, the silver work remarkable and the traditional clothing is unique.

On Monday we ventured onto the Mae Ngad Dam, kayaking to a house boat in record time one hour and fi fteen minutes as opposed to the best time of two hours (thats adventure-outdoor-savvy Stanfordians for you!), where we had lunch and enjoyed swimming in the dam.

The following day, after an eight kilometre hike up to Chiang Dao cave, we decided to have an early night. We fl ew back to Bangkok and from there we travelled by bus to Hua Hin where the Thai king has his residence. Our hotel was very comfortable and boasted its own pool and, with the temperature in the forties again, we really appreciated the unspoilt beach. The next day was spent in exploring the town; attending the ubiquitous night market and eating fi sh dinners. The last day we all decamped via the bakkie buses to the nearby Santorini water park where we spent the whole day riding the Cobra.

On the 26th it was time to go home and we all felt, as wonderful as the cuisine of Thailand was, we needed to have a braai! After an uneventful fl ight home, we were happy to be back in our home country on the 27th.

Planes and boats and much more...Planes and boats and much more...

STANFORD athletes Gavin S rling (represen ng Namibia Invita onal); Marc S rling, Reese Bain and Graeme Harty (represen ng Limpopo) par cipated with a total of 309 players in the 2014 SA Schools Country Districts Squash Championships held in Bloemfontein from May 1 to 4.
