Missouri Compromise of 1820

• Missouri applied for admission as a slave state

• Maine applied as a free state

• Temporary solution that kept a balance of power in the Senate

• Slavery was then prohibited north (above) of the latitude 36°30’, which is the southern border of Missouri

Compromise of 1850

• California’s constitution made it a free state

• Passed the Fugitive Slave law, which required that runaway slaves be returned to owners

• Slave trade ended in Washington DC and owners could keep what they owned

• Texas could not annex NM

Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854

• “Popular sovereignty” would decide if a new state would be free or slave (i.e. Kansas and Nebraska were seeking statehood)

• Fighting occurred as each group tried to gain the popular vote (be in control)- “Bleeding Kansas”
