In their over-emphasis on the details of religious observance, they have forgotten about the most basic element of faith: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind. Jesus reminds them that being faithful to God isn’t about following precise rules but rather it is simply about loving God. Of the many radical things said and done by Jesus, his unflinching emphasis on love was the most radical of all. Love was the greatest commandment, he said (Matthew 22:37-40). It was his new commandment, his prime directivelove for God, for self, for neighbour, for stranger, . . . and even for enemy, as he himself modelled. The new commandment of love meant neither beliefs nor words, neither taboos, systems, structures nor the labels that enshrined them mattered most. Love decentred [and] relativized everything else; love took priority over everything else. Jesus’ words call us to love our neighbour as ourselves. We are called to treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves. To be able to do this, we need to picture ourselves in their place experiencing all that they are experiencing; not imposing our own values and circumstances. To see ourselves in the place of another is the key to responding with compassion. The origin of the word ‘compassion’ means experiencing with. If we are able to truly ‘experience with’ another person perhaps then we can genuinely recognise and respond to their needs. If we are to love others as we love ourselves we must first be content and happy with who we are. It is only when we are comfortable with who we are that we are able to reach out to those around us with compassion. Loving God

Jesus’ answer to the Pharisees highlights their preoccupation with the particulars of the Law contained within scripture. It was his new commandment, his prime directive—love for God, for self, for neighbour, for stranger, . . . and even for enemy, as he himself modelled. To be able to do this, we need to picture ourselves in their place – experiencing all that they are experiencing; not imposing our own values and circumstances. To see ourselves in the place of another is the key to responding with compassion. The origin of the word ‘compassion’ means experiencing with. If we are able to truly ‘experience with’ another person perhaps then we can genuinely recognise and respond to their needs. Heart Spirituality

As Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, we

live our faith in the Father’s love revealed

in the Heart of Christ. We want to be like

Jesus who loved with a human heart; we

want to love through him and with him,

and to proclaim his love to the world. #10

Our heart has not only the need to love; it

experiences also the need to be loved.

Where shall we turn to find a true friend

into whose heart we can pour what is

overflowing in ours? To whom can we

confide our most intimate secrets? Jesus

Christ has a keen desire to be our friend,

so let us turn to him, making him our

friend. How precious his friendship is! We

can count on his fidelity; he will never fail

us, not even when we are in the midst of

trials, not even on the other side of the

tomb. Jules Chevalier, Issoudun 1891.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be everywhere loved……….forever!
