STATEMENT from Educators 4 Excellence-NY on

New York State Assembly Proposal to Delay

    Common Core Implementation

Bill Would Complicate Necessary Reforms, Hurt Students and Teachers

(New York, NY) The Assembly bill introduced late last night would unnecessarily

delay the complete implementation of the Common Core, undermining the teachingstandards supported by the vast majority of teachers. Teachers also support a multi-measure evaluation system, but this bill would effectively eliminate the multi-measure component of such a system. Educators would be subject to evaluation andtermination almost entirely on the basis of their principals evaluation. Thats a stepback, not forward.

Students, teachers, and principals have enough on their plates this year. They dont

need Albany changing the rules midyear, throwing our educational system intodisarray by asking them to adjust to yet another new, hastily enacted change.

When E4E convened a group of teachers to discuss this issue, they were steadfastand united in their support of the Common Core, as well as effective multi-measureteacher evaluation. They also recognized that adjustments are necessary to improveimplementation, but that a moratorium would not simply adjust course it would turn

us in the wrong direction. This Teacher Action Team will release a set ofrecommendations shortly that will detail how to support the implementation of theCommon Core without gutting it.

We are hopeful that the legislature and the Governor will continue to move forwardon these needed changes, by building on the progress already made in schoolsinstead of tossing it out. This moratorium is not in the best interests of students or

teachers and merely kicks the can down the road for a few years.

For far too long, education policy has been created without a critical voice at the table the

    voice of classroom teachers.

Educators 4 Excellence (E4E), a teacher-led organization, is changing this dynamic by

placing the voices of teachers at the forefront of the conversations that shape our classrooms

and careers. With a quickly growing national network of more than 12,000 educators united

by the E4E Declaration of Teachers Principles and Beliefs, E4E teachers can learn abouteducation policy and research, network at E4Es event series with like-minded colleagues

and important education policymakers, and take action by advocating for teacher-created

policy recommendations that lift student achievement and the teaching profession. For
