PAST EXPLORERSFor years explorers have pushed the boundaries of science and determination, makingtheir way through the most difficultlandscapes, in the harshest weather conditions.

Their discoveries are the record of humanity's

crusade for knowledge : nature in it's rawest,

untainted beauty. Imagine a world without the

engulfing green of the Amazon jungle; without the

relaxing Asian landscapes or the infinite white of the

Arctic. Just few of nature¶s wonders we admire, thanks toour fellow explorers.

MODERN EXPLORERSNowadays, we offer people the chance to re-discover these

mysterious beauties once more and find out what needs to be done to

maintain them. The greatest journeys, total freedom and adventures beyond - all in the

safest conditions. Our experts strive to offer the best services throughout accurate

meteorological and geographic knowledge. Join us for the ultimate thrill ± no props, no

tricks, no actors. Just you and nature. Explore, discover, experience« Can you live up to

her expectations? Let¶s find out!

MODERN WORLD

As human society progresses, one step after the other, we often tend to forget that weare not alone« We are sharing our home worldwith billions of other creatures, just as spectacular

and amazing as any of us« However, we alone

threaten all their existences, bringing suffering and

extinction to countless life forms. Global warming

has proven more than speculation long ago; it is a

fact, therefore everyone should take responsibility for

their actions.

OUR MISSIONEXCOVER offers every individual the unique opportunity of a direct,

personal contact with nature. Acknowledging that there is something

else besides humanity, a biological treasure of infinite value, is the key to protecting the

environment. EXCOVER¶s aim is not only bringing satisfaction to its clients, but also

allowing them to gain awareness of the problems that threaten our world. That may only

happen in the heart of nature, the only place where one may truly feel alive.

After the initial documentation process on topics such as meteorology, tourism and

exploration, we understood:

the concept of meteorology

the risks of exploration

Following this step, we asked for the help of three

specialists:

Mr. Ioan Gelu Stefan Gatejescu, director at the Regional

Meteorological Center Oltenia

Ms. Ramona Bratoloveanu, chief meteorologist at the

Drobeta Turnu-Severin meteorological station

Thanks to their cooperation, during our meetings we acquired additional information

concerning these topics:

- normalizing- adding extra entities to the ERD

- solving many-to-many relationships withthe help of intersection entities

- eliminating the errors

Page 9: ColegiulNationalTraian

Subsequently, we managed to identify the business needs of our system:

The CLIENT represents the sole purpose of our activity, therefore:

- his/her safety must be ensured at any time

during the involvement in one of the projects

- his/her opinion and preferences must be taken

into consideration in developing our new services

The database must offer a reliable source of information. It must track:

- clients- various meteorological information- centers and their personnel

- the air fleet

- projects and their teams

- any access of the above information

- all meteorological stations within a 20 radius of a center

Accessing the database must be strictly restricted, in order to secure the integrity

of the database. There must be three access levels:

Any person who uses our services becomes a CLIENT and is introduced into our

database. Apart from the mandatory information, which are used to contact our clients,we may also collect information about their faith.

Apart from a starting and an end date, each

PROJECT automatically receives code.

HISTORY is an intersection entity between CLIENT and

PROJECT. The µclient feedback¶ attribute may only receive

values after the project is finished.

PROJECT TEAM is the group of employees that accompaniesthe clients for as long as a project lasts.

BACKUP TEAM is aimed to offer support to those project teams that may encounter

technical problems during their mission. Between the starting date and end date, the

members must be able to intervene at any moment.

The entity HELICOPTER contains details that allow a proper selection of the

chopper for each project.

The µtype¶ attribute of the CENTER entity may only have two values: µcc¶ (city

center), for those centers situated in cities where clients may be contacted, and µpc¶(project center) representing a center that is closer to nature which is the starting pointfor projects.

Since many projects take place in exotic places, the

clients could contract a DISEASE. In order to prevent

such a situation, the µpreventive solution¶ attribute indicates

the most effective medicine which is administered to all

clients before a project begins.

HEALTH THREAT is an intersection entity between CENTERand DISEASE. Depending on the gravity, its µthreat level¶ ranges from thelowest degree - 1 to the highest - 10.

The µrisk level¶ attribute of the MONTHLY CLIMATE entity evaluates a center¶s

monthly climate on a scale from 1 to 10, the most dangerous being 10. The µwind

frequence¶ attribute indicates the number of windy days as a ratio, for example, the value

for a 30 day month with 5 windy days will be 5/30.

HIGH SPOT defines a tourist attraction in wilderness. The µrelative position¶ attribute

indicates the distance from the center, as well as a direction which may be: north, south, east, west, north-east, north-west, south-east or south-west. Whether the the high spot isa human community, the value for µcontact person¶ is

a name, otherwise it remains null.

SCHEDULE is an intersection entity between

PROJECT and DAY. The values used for the µtime¶

attribute may be morning, afternoon or evening.

The EMPLOYEE supertype is divided into two subtypes, that

is PASSIVE and ACTIVE. Passive employees are responsible for preparing and organizing the projects, while the active employees do thefield work.

For the PILOT LICENSE entity, µprivilege level¶ indicates the type of helicopter a pilot

is allowed to use and the possessor¶s skill level.

Each USER ACCOUNT has an µaccess level¶ which restricts the employees¶ rights in

the database.

Joining the database, by signing in through an user account, is considered a

DATABASE ACTIVITY.

Any usage of meteorological information is an

INTERACTION and is be kept in the database.

Although different centers may be situated in the

same climatic region, regional particularities determine

unique climatic patterns, therefore each MONTHLY CLIMATE

is representative for only one CENTER.

If the CENTER¶s µtype¶ attribute is µcc¶, it does not lead to anyHIGH SPOT. The centers are distributed in such a manner so that noHIGH SPOT may be reached from two different locations.

The CENTER-HEALTH THREAT relationship connects the center with the with the

disease that is frequently encountered in the region.

The DAY-DATABASE ACTIVITY relationships

indicates the date when the database is accessed. This

may be different from the date when the database was

updated.

Because there are more than one members of the

personnel involved in accompanying the clients into thewilderness, they are reunited under the PROJECT TEAM entity,

whose UID is that of the PROJECT.

Although two BACKUP TEAMs may be grounded in the same period, each one has

different PROJECT TEAMs that may receive their assistance.

The arcs involving the BACKUP TEAM and PROJECT TEAM are mutually exclusive.

However, the extra relationship BACKUP TEAM-PROJECT TEAM is due to the fact that

they have different purposes: one is supposed to carry out the project while the other has to offer assistance in case of emergency.

TIME constraints:

For the PROJECT and BACKUP TEAM entities, the start date must be before the enddate.

For the DATABASE ACTIVITY entity, end hour must

be after start hour .

For the EMPLOYEE entity, birth date must be before

hiring date.

For the HELICOPTER entity, date since in use must be

between date bought and last repair .

SPACE constraints:

Longitude must be comprised within the maximum values:180E to 180W degrees whilst the limits for latitude are 90N to 90N degrees.

Other constraints:

An USER ACCOUNT only has three possible values for access level: 1, 2 or 3.

A PROJECT TEAM/BACKUP TEAM is composed of one PILOT and one GUIDE.

A PILOT must own a PILOT LICENSE whose privilege level is ranked as

µcommercial¶.The rain probability for WEATHER FORECAST is expresses in percentages.

For METEOROLOGICAL RECORDING, rain may have 2 values: µyes¶ or µno¶.

In creating the database we have made the following assumptions:

Only one GPS position is recorded for a CENTER or METEOROLOGICAL STATION.The HOLIDAY entity only keeps track of the most important celebrations of the

following religions: Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Hindu and

Buddhist.

For the DATABASE ACTIVITY, start hour and end

hour record hour, minute as well as second.

Measurements are made in the metric system:

- WEATHER FORECAST temperature,

METEOROLOGICAL RECORDING temperature and MONTHLYCLIMATE average temperature: degrees centigrade

- WEATHER FORECAST wind speed, METEOROLOGICALRECORDING wind speed and MONTHLY CLIMATE average windspeed: kilometers/hour

- METEOROLOGICAL STATION altitude: meters

- HIGH SPOT relative position: kilometers

- MONTHLY CLIMATE precipitation: millimeters

- HELICOPTER fuel consumption: liters/hour

We have created a flexible and reliable system which allows easy access to the

meteorological information corresponding to a specific center.

The system can identify the clients¶ preferences by

checking their history, allowing the business to become

more costumer centered.

The database may be used to generate global scale

reports and statistics as well as create long term

meteorological predictions.

We have created a well designed ERD to meet the demands of all parts involved, having as a final aim the satisfaction of the clients.

The system encourages performances and competence as it keeps track of the

employees¶ activities and their involvement in different projects.
