CONVENTION RAFFLE:

Our raffle was a wonderful success!! We made $873.00!! Thank you, thank you to all who donated items. A special thank you goes to Cindy Hyde for her beautiful quilted wall hanging (won by Jaydee Ager of Georgia) and to Dick Kolson for the gorgeous painting (won by our own Betty Kealiher). Ask her about the dirty trick she played on Dick! A lovely counted cross-stitched pillow donated by Naomi Liggett and finished by Bessie Haddad was sent home with Leslie Ramsay, a double remembrance for her. Several items were donated by Margaret Vance, including sweat shirts Maria England (Donna's daughter) hand painted. She also painted some flower pots Mary Lou Gripshover donated. Several bulb collections were donated by Handy Hatfield, Naomi Liggett and Phyllis Hess. Bessie gave us a lovely antique bone dish, Bea Wilson donated several hand painted garden items , Don Barnes one of his books which he autographed (and Nancy Kolson won) and Tag Bourne a garden apron with daffodils. Even though it became an embarrassment because so many CODS members won, it was only because we all purchased so many tickets trying to win our favorite item! (Ask Handy about that!) Betty, Barrie Kridler and Barry Nichols did a fantastic job selling tickets on the last night. They sold around $400.00 worth in just a short time! It was totally due to the time and effort you all exerted that the raffle made so much money! Once again, Our Thanks To All!!

Aliens Report U.K

Take-off 11:50 a.m. Heathrow (London) Airport, Columbus here we come!, 500 Years on. First stop Washington leaving our Jumbo for the local crop sprayer with two propellers. Being midnight by British Summer Time, bed was beckoning but daffodils has to be looked after before us, then it was our turn we went to the restaurant and whilst eating dinner we were treated to the most stupendous thunderstorm.

Wednesday morning, out and about to see the sites, down to the river, we viewed the Santa Maria. Are you sure Christopher Columbus braved the Atlantic Ocean in that little ship? Back to the Hotel to see if any CODS members had arrived, they had, Michael then disappeared into the basement of the Hotel to find our precious flowers, great activity over the next few hours, sorting and arranging the blooms. Brian Duncan arrived early Wednesday evening and set to with his daffodils, as the evening wore on more members arrived to arrange their competitive entries or just to chat and reminisce. Time to adjourn to the bar for a well earned rest and drink and to swop stories of past achievements, and so to bed.

Thursday Morning 4:30 a.m., Michael cannot sleep, he is restless so we make out way downstairs so he can stage the exhibits.

Our excursion to AmeriFlora was most interesting, it is a great achievement, we only wish we could visit again in a couple of months when the bedding plants have settled down. We are sure Christopher Colombus would be proud of the authorities for staging such a great spectacle.

Friday Evening/ Saturday Morning very late or early as the case may be, we retired to the bar after the banquet to celebrate Kate Reade's Gold Medal (Who needs an excuse!). At 2:30 am. we retired to our room along with a few friends to telephone Kate to impart the good news, it was about 7:00 a.m. in Northern Ireland.

Later Saturday Morning coaches took us out into the Ohio countryside where we were entertained by Handy Hatfield whose daffodils and gardens were truly magnificent.

ADS Convention Chairman's Report:

I wish to thank all the members of CODS who helped with the recent ADS Convention, especially the Steering Committee: Tag Bourne was the Registrar for the third time, Nancy Gill Show Chairman and Handy Hatfield Co-Chairman for the second time, Phyllis Hess Treasurer and Cindy Hyde our talented Immediate Past President. The convention went very smoothly thanks to the excellent cooperation of the members and many non-members who pitched in and helped.

The bills are all paid and we have a balance of $1231.56 to turn over to ADS. This was a pleasant surprise since registration was lower than anticipated. The budget was based on 200 full-time registrations and we only had 176 and eleven cancelations. While Nancy was worrying about the weather, I was worried we would end up in the red!

At the May Meeting a motion was passed to spend $200.00 for the purchase of bulbs for the Columbus Zoo. Steve Belcher, Zoo Horticulturist, requested we buy late blooming cultivars since the zoo is busier the end of the daffodil season. Fifty bulbs of Dainty Miss 7W-GWW and Stratosphere 7Y-0 were ordered from Elise Havens.

We extend our sincere symphathy to Bea Wilson upon the sudden death of her husband Dr. John Wilson. John and Bea have been valuable members of CODS for a number of years.

We Did it Again!

The American Daffodil Society came to Columbus one more time April 23-25 with great expectations for another fantastic convention and show. They weren't disappointed!

It was the concerted effort of the society residents of Central Ohio and the many "far flung" members of CODS that made this 1992 Convention Show outstanding in a very trying growing season! From the first planning session until the last test tube was put back in those boxes, there were many helping hands believe me, I needed all of you and I want to thank each and everyone.

The complete show report will be listed elsewhere in this newsletteer, however, I thought I'd talk about just a few who managed to help me tremendously and also win as Wells Knierim says the "Big Prizes". As you all know Hube Bourne was awarded my official "Spouse of the Year Award" at the convention for making our new vase of three mini properties, etc. But I do wonder if he would have done this "minor" task without some encouragment from his spouse, Tag - the Gold Ribbon and English Award winner. My Co-Chairman, Handy Hatfield, who also had his lovely garden open for our convention, won the Quinn Ribbon. Naomi Liggett, not only Convention Chairman, but the Watrous, Fowlds and Olive Lee winner and she did the class cards to match the schedule she typed and had duplicated (I'm sure in her spare time!) Our President, Cindy Hyde, was a repeat Red-White-Blue Ribbon National Show winner as well as making the black covers for the Design Division and coordinating the Commercial Exhibits. As for our out-of-town members, Ruth Pardue did the entries calculations all 2005 of them with no discrepancies. Harold McConnell, Nancy Pilipuf and Jane Meyer did classification. Wells Knierim donated his properties to CODS and the Adena and SWODS Daffodil Societies allowed us to borrow their properties. Last but certainly not least...Mary Lou Gripshover delivered and returned the SWODS porperties and was the Judge's Chairman. She also won the Purple, Larus, Northern Ireland, Link and Green Awards. So for future hopeful show winners....it pays to work on a show....so do it and you win too!!

I'm sure everyone enjoyed the Design Division. This was the first time we offered the Petite Award for Small Designs. You may remember I was very concerned about the space requirements. Obviously that was before our March "disaster". But, our show did score high enough to apply for a National Council Award and Naomi is compiling the brief.

As you can see, with all this help, I did very little except worry. But, I worried for nothing we managed to pull it off wonderfully thanks to all of you WE DID IT AGAIN!! YEA!

Nancy Gill, Show Chairman

(Editor's Note) Nancy did all of this and also won the ADS Miniature White Ribbon, so it also pays to chair a daffodil show.

Look for the old daffodil bed at AmeriFlora, it now has a planting of caladiums just breaking ground.

We should all give Tag Bourne a vote of thanks for serving as Editor since July 1983. She has earned a well deserved rest! This Editor hopes that more of our members will write something for the newsletter as it is only as good as you members make it! October and January issues always need articles. Let's also hear from CODS members who do not live in the Central Ohio area.

DEADLINE FOR THE OCTOBER ISSUE IS SEPTEMBER ! This is early, but I will be extremely busy in September.
