1992 AMERICAN DAFFODIL SOCIETY CONVENTION

The convention is less than four months away and most of the plans have been finalized. Dr. Peter Ramsay of New Zealand and Don Barnes of England will be the featured speakers. The National Show will start on Thursday and continue until after the Friday Banquet. Nancy Gill and Handy Hatfield, Show Chairmen, will need your help with all phases of the show, please contact one of them and volunteer your service.

Friday will be a tour to AmeriFlora '92 and anyone holding a season pass may deduct fifteen dollars from the convention registration fee. Since AmeriFlora '92 will have been opened for only four days at the time of the tour, everyone will want to attend this exciting event.

The registration table will be open for registrants on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning and afternoon. Tag Bourne, Chairman, will need help with this demanding job. The ADS has a new policy on registration fees since our last convention. The price increases ten percent 45 days prior to the convention and twenty-five percent 21 days prior. If you are not a member of ADS and wish to attend the convention, contact me for a registration form.

I am very sorry to report that Bob Somma was injured on December 14th when his pickup truck was struck by a car driven by a man fleeing from police officers. Bob has head, chest and abdominal injuries and is in Grant Medical Center.

I hope Bob is recovering well and I know he would appreciate your cards.

MORE BEST IN THE GARDEN

For the sake of argument, or should we say "spirited discussion", I will add to the list of the best flowers in my garden last Spring. Coupled with Tag's list of her best ones, it should give our newer members a good-sized wish list for order-ing next year.

It was a wonderful year for many flowers and exceptional for trumpets for some unknown reason.

Trumpet Warrior 1 YW-WWY ... a new one from Mitsch, I went bananas over it at the 1990 convention when I saw it a bit tired from its travels. Easily the best reverse trumpet yet. It is silky smooth, reverses quickly and was the best trumpet in my garden. I recall Ruth Pardue saying it was the best flower in hers.

Bega 1 Y-Y ... from David Jackson, it has settled down quickly here and gave me large, smooth blooms of golden yellow. It appears to be increasing rapidly, as well.

River Queen ... Every year I seem to like this better. Here's something for argument ... I Ehink it is the best American bred daffodil. It is simply superb. It's from Bill Pannill.

Gull 2 W-GWW Mitsch. Gull is capable of giving you the most perfect blooms. So many times when it looks less than its best, it is because it is cut too soon. It has to grow on the plant for a few days.

Pink Division 2's were so great this year. The colors were intense and everyone had great substance. The best were:

Pink Ice, 2 W-P ... bred by Elise Havens, it has wide, very white petals and a pink cup which is strongly colored toward the rim. With Precedent as its mother, the cup spreads out as the bloom matures so I Val* it's prettier picked early.

China Doll, 2 W-WWP ... the first I've had from Clive Postles, the John Lea flowers in its background are pretty obvious. The petals are immense and recurve a little, showing off the cup with its ruffled baby pink edge. Large and magnificent.

Prism 2 Y-Y ... this is Mitsch/Havens. In its 2nd year in my garden it gave me five perfect blooms without a nick or a flaw. It's not expensive, either.

Lemon Cremes 2 YW-W Mitsch. Perfect name on this, it's petals are lemon/yellow and a white halo at their base makes the creamy buff cup show up nicely. New, but in-expensive.

Jetsetter 2 Y-R Brogden. I love Y-'R's, and one that is deeply colored and sunproof as well I like even more. Deep gold round petals set off a goblet-shaped, half length cup with a ruffled edge. The cup only started to fade when the petals died and was still red when the flower dried up.

Cedar Hills 3 W-GYY Mitsch/Havens. First seen at our last convention here, it is hard to imagine that a flower could have a greener eye than this flower has. Living up to its promise, it was Best in Show in Cleveland for me.

Tag mentioned Cairn Toul 3 W-ORR and Rivendell 3 W-GYY and they were both great in my garden, too.

Doctor Hugh 3 W-G00 ... Brian Duncan. The only standard size daffodil I allow to have two clumps in my rather small garden. A huge bloom 4 1/2 inches across and smooth as silk. It has to grow on the plant for several days so it needs shaded and it absolutely requires an acid soil to perform at its best.

Molten Lava 3 Y-YYR. Another Mitsch/Havens. In its second year down it produced three perfect blooms. It was good for Tag, too. It may be one of the few that doesn't know how to grow badly.

Eriskay 4 W-Y ... and Delnashaugh 4 W-P, both from John Lea and both planted in early blooming beds made it to the Adena show. After that, no doubles looked good and most blasted.

Inca 6Y-WWY Mitsch. Very early blooms, too early to even take them to Nash- ville. Inca blooms right after Jetfire. They were really lovely until my cats decided to fight next to the clump. The cats learn to stay in the paths as the season progcess- es. That's why they're still alive.

Lisette 7 Y-GYR .... Ahrens from New Zealand. Late in the season, this always enchants me. It has vivid yellow pointed petals and a scalloped cup rimmed red/orange. I got it at a club sale in 1982 but only had five blooms this year. I wish it would multiply.

I have to conclude this by saying that my seedlings, giving me my first blooms this year were very exciting and two stood out from the rest.

Drumtullagh x Rainbow was lovely with silky white petals and a pink rimmed cup. It was in my Quinn in Nashville and was up for Best in Show. It had even multiplied to two bulbs before it bloomed.

Como x Glory of Lisse was in my second place entry in the Link Class at the convention. It was my best poet and had a flat disc cup with a broad orange band.

Writing about these makes me eager for Spring. Some of my paperwhites are show-ing buds now, so that will help to get me through the best of the Winter.
