Principal’s News

Welcome to Week 11 and the final week of Term 1 – 4 school days to go! As I mentioned last week the term has flown by in a whirlwind of success and wonderful opportunities for our students. Last week our Reg Kelly Cricket team had their first and second games for the 2017 Competition and they comfortably won both games. The training the boys have done with Mr Kemp is very worthwhile and the 2017 team has gotten off to great start with their wins but also their great teamwork and sportsmanship – well done!

A group of Stage 2 students represented our school at the 2017 Newcastle Writers festival. They travelled to Newcastle Town Hall and library to hear children’s authors and learn how published authors write.

IMPORTANT NOTICES - Reminders We are constantly reminding students of our PBL Values and school motto along with our Tawny 5 Rules and I would also encourage parents to use these words when celebrating positive behaviour and discussing negative choices with your child. This week we are reviewing our playground rules focusing on respect and safety. The lessons are undertaken each Thursday within all classrooms and this language is then used across our school to remind students of expectations The Tawny 5 Rules:

• I can listen • I can put up my hand and wait • I can work quietly • I can follow instructions • I can control what I do and Say

Writer's Festival Wednesday 29th March 2017

The students attending the Writer's Festival last Wednesday had a fantastic time. They were Deynah Bruce, Aleira Mansfield, Xavier Hicks, Caleb Shaw, Chloe Flannery, Phoebeahn White, Hayley Speedie, Nathaniel Stericker, Alirah, Seth Smith, Claire Bagnall, Alyra Bannerman, Ebony Shaw and Piper Fitzpatrick. The author George Invanoff was thoroughly entertaining to listen to. He discussed his new book series 'You Choose' as well as the creation of the Flying Doctors books.

George shared that there were three things that began his interest in writing. Firstly at school there was a reading list that had to be covered and read by the end of the year (a bit like our Premier's Reading Challenge). This list gave him exposure to all types of genres and from there he knew science fiction was his favourite. Secondly, in high school he participated in creative writing classes and just loved it. And thirdly, he was a huge Dr Who fan and one day wanted to write an episode or a book for Dr Who, and now he has written a Dr Who book.

After listening and meeting George, we had lunch in Civic Park and then explored Newcastle City Library. Our group especially enjoyed the children's area and were soon relaxing on bean bags reading books and relaxing. It was a fun day and we look forward to going again next year. A huge thank you to our drivers - Mrs Bruce, Mrs Flannery, Mr Smith and Mrs Bagnall.

Reg Kelly Shield Cricket

Last week Clarence Town played the first two rounds of the Reg Kelly Shield for 2017. On Tuesday we travelled to Seaham to take on Karuah in the first round of the competition. Karuah asked our team to bat first and we got off to a very solid start thanks to some good batting from Gilbert Ainsworth and Isaac Sellers. We were able to maintain strong momentum throughout the remainder of the innings with Zac Braun-Socha retiring for the first time on 24 runs and this helped us to reach a very competitive total of 117. Our bowling innings commenced sensationally from the opening over with our bowlers quickly splitting open the Karuah top order. We managed to take 8 wickets for only 6 runs thanks to some superb bowling from Harrison Jones, Lucas Hawkin, Harry Boyton and Tait Maytom. We were unable to take any more wickets for the rest of the innings with Karuah defending strongly against some more good bowling. Eventually Karuah finished with 31 runs from their 24 overs and we scored an impressive first round win.

On Thursday we travelled to King Edward Park in East Maitland to take on East Maitland in the 2nd round of the competition. Once again East Maitland asked our team to bat first and we started our innings quite slowly. We kept fighting hard with the bat throughout our entire innings with a strong contribution of 29 runs from Lucas Hawkin and some great support from Nathan Andrews and Gilbert Ainsworth to help our side reach a highly competitive total of 103. We made another great start to our bowling innings with our opening bowlers Lucas Hawkin and Harrison Jones both taking 2 early wickets to restrict East Maitland from scoring early runs. Our bowlers continued to perform strongly throughout the remainder of the innings and they were strongly supported by some sensational fielding, highlighted by a superb run out executed by Zac Braun-Socha to finish the innings. In the end East Maitland scored 38 runs and this provided us with our 2nd comprehensive victory in a week. I would like to personally thank all those parents, grandparents and other family members involved in transporting and supporting all our players in last week's games. A special thanks to those wonderful parents who helped out with scoring and photography duties during the 2 games. We now have to wait until term 4 to play our remaining 3 games of this year's competition. Excellent Work Boys!!!!!!!!!!!
