Term 4, Week 4 Student of the Week: Paige

Paige is a delightful member of S2/3B. She has attended

Clarence Town Public School for the past 2 years. During this

time she has demonstrated the values of Respect, Safety and

Learning. Paige always shows respect to teachers, students &

visiting community members. She demonstrates safety in the

playground and always assists younger students if they need

help. Paige has shown commitment to learning through setting

and achieving goals which have enabled improvement in both

Literacy & Numeracy.

We think Paige will make an excellent Student of the Week.

Student Achievement: Reg Kelly Shield Cricket

Last Thursday Clarence Town played the third round of the

Reg Kelly Shield competition for 2019 against Telarah Public

School at Reg Ford Oval. Clarence Town were given the

opportunity to bat first and got off to an excellent start through

our opening batsmen Charlie Jones and Jacob Head. After

both Jacob and Charlie retired on a score of 25 Clarence Town

Surf Fun Day

continued to score runs at a rapid rate. Some strong contributions were made by both Will Barlow

scoring 19 runs and Jentsen Brand scoring 11 runs helping to build our strong total. At the

conclusion of our batting innings Clarence Town managed to score 167 runs off our 24 overs.

When Telarah started their batting innings their opening batsman were both quickly dismissed by

Charlie Jones who ended up taking 3 wickets for the game. Clarence Town had several good

bowlers throughout the innings with Jacob Head, Lane Jones and Aylia Head all chipping in with

a wicket or two. A special mention must be made of Mark Bates and Riley Flannery who both

were able to take a wicket in their first ever game of cricket. At the end of Telarah's batting innings

they managed to score a total of 104 runs and this provided Clarence Town with a comprehensive

victory on the day. A big thank you must go to all parents/grandparents who came to support our

players on the day and to Mr Jones for doing an excellent job as chief scorer. Well Done Clarence

Town!!

Reg Kelly Shield Cricket

Last Friday Clarence Town played the fourth round of the Reg Kelly Shield competition for 2019

against Thornton Public School at Reg Ford Oval. Unfortunately Thornton were only able to bring

a team of 8 players for the game, but fortunately Clarence Town players showed their excellent

sportsmanship by agreeing to help them out by providing some additional fielders for the game.

Clarence Town were given the opportunity to bat first and got off to a good start with runs coming

quickly in the early stages. Tait Maytom made a strong contribution to our batting innings by

scoring 25 runs and he combined well with Charlie Jones who managed to score 24 runs. Nash

Jeffery and Ewan Head also made strong contributions with bat as they managed to score 17 and

14 runs respectively during their innings. At the conclusion of Clarence Town's batting innings we

managed to score an impressive total of 163 runs off our 24 overs. When Thornton were given

the opportunity to bat they quickly showed their inexperience as they struggled to score runs and

their wickets were taken swiftly. Clarence Town had some strong bowling performances with

Jacob Head, Tait Maytom, Charlie Jones and Nash Jeffery all getting amongst the wickets as

Thornton were quickly dismissed for a total of 17 runs. Once again Clarence Town showed

excellent sportsmanship by providing some Thornton batsman with much needed batting practice,

as some of their batsman were given a second chance to have a bat. The best part of the game

against Thornton was watching Clarence Town students showing their fantastic sportsmanship

throughout the game. A big thank you must go to all parents/grandparents who came to support

our players on the day and to both Mr Jones and Mrs Jones for doing an excellent job as our chief

scorers. Outstanding Work Clarence Town!!

Principal’s News Lots of good news to report this week in the aftermath of our community coming together to recognise the schools 170th Birthday. On Wednesday last week the school held a special assembly and open day for the celebration. Our school is one of the oldest in NSW and has a proud history in providing quality education for the children of Clarence Town and district. The wonderful display of memorabilia and photographs sparked a great deal of conversation as memories of past events were recalled. Those who were able to attend the school on the day, were treated to some old style lessons and children’s activities in each of the classrooms and a special assembly in the afternoon. The large gathering of parents and community members were treated to a wonderful speech by our School Captain, Chloe Flannery, celebrating the past and looking forward to the future. Chloe will present

her speech again this afternoon at Dungog High School. We know she will once again do an excellent job! Our school choir under the guidance of Miss Bunn gave a marvellous performance of the Cat Stephens song ‘Days of the Old School Yard’ It was lovely to see all of our staff and students getting into the spirit; dressing in period costume to add further authenticity to the day. A special mention of Matilda and Molly who made special birthday cards for the school. Visitors enjoyed a Devonshire Tea as they relived memories and tried to find themselves, their children and grandchildren and friends among the many photographs of events and milestones from the previous 170 years. I’d also personally like to acknowledge and thank Mrs Karen Brown for the wonderful display she coordinated in the Library. It was an interesting, informative and detailed visual infographic timeline of the history of Clarence Town School. There has been a lot of positive feedback from the school and wider community regarding the display. A credit to our Librarian; Mrs Brown! A fantastic example of upholding and modelling our PBL values was witnessed last week in S3MW. Seth Smith displayed exceptional leadership and respect when after competing in his round of Public Speaking at the School Assembly he personally sought out Aurora Greenaway who had won the round to congratulate her on her win. An admirable act of good sportsmanship Seth, well done! In saying that, congratulations and well done Aurora on your great speech, you spoke really well! Congratulations to Mr Kemp and the cricket team who played Telarah on Thursday and Thornton on Friday in the next two rounds of the Reg Kelly Shield competition at Clarence Town Oval. A fantastic game and great sportsmanship was shown by all on both occasions. Well done Clarence Town who were the victors in both rounds! Regretfully Sharon Robinson will be standing down from P&C as President. I want to pass on my thanks, gratitude and respect on behalf of myself and the students and staff of Clarence Town Public School. Sharon has been an inspirational member of our P&C for some time offering unwavering support of our students and school programs. She has been at the forefront of most fundraisers and projects coordinating, organising and supporting all P&C members and our wider parent body. Under her leadership our P&C has grown and had one of the most successful fundraising periods of its’ time. We are sad to see her relinquish the position but happy that Sharon will remain an active member of the P&C. As Vice President, Lisa Zillioto will be standing in as President until our next meeting. Just a reminder about bringing pets to school for news. We certainly understand the excitement around new pets, especially puppies and kittens, but once again we have DoE guidelines around such visits. There is an Animals in Schools Policy and we have to have certain things in place, such as a risk management document, including handling procedures, possible allergies and phobias and a vaccination and worming history of the animal. This creates considerable more work for teachers and staff for a short few minutes of news item. Whilst I agree it seems excessive, these are the guidelines we abide by. We therefore ask that any student wishing to bring an animal for news, brings photographs to share with the class. To compensate for this we participate each year in the Responsible Pet Ownership which meets all of the guidelines for animal welfare and student education. I thank you for your support and understanding in this matters.

A quick reminder, re: dogs. Sometimes parents and Carers use the opportunity of

walking to and from school to also walk the family dog. Dogs around the school are

required to be safely restrained on leads and are not permitted on school grounds. I

would ask that you also keep them a safe distance from the school gate so as not to

scare any students or cause anxiety or over excitement.

A very important safety message for Term 4 is: Hats are also an essential requirement for

Term 4 and our Sun Safe ‘No hat, Play in the Shade’ policy is in place. Hats are also required for

Sport and any outdoor lessons, including working in the gardens.

Our school uniform is a broad brimmed green hat with the school logo. These are available from

the Uniform Shop for $15.00. Several students have been bringing/wearing caps to school and

these are not a part of our school uniform. Caps do not meet the requirements for sun safe

protection and are therefore not acceptable for students at school.

Our new Tawny PBL Mascot is going well. PBL stands for Positive

Behaviours For Learning and is the basis of our Student Wellbeing Program

in the school.

We are constantly reminding students of our PBL Values and school motto along with our Tawny 5 Rules and I would also encourage parents to use

these words when celebrating positive behaviour and discussing negative choices with your child. The Tawny 5 Rules:

Launching a D&DCoS Facebook page So lots on the agenda for Term 4! Clarence Town Public School will host the next D&DCoS STEAM Focus Group meeting on Tuesday 12 November from 3:30-5:00pm in in Library. Mrs Welsh is our school representative for this project, which plans and coordinates a variety of STEM and STEAM focused projects across our Community of Schools.

Term 4 Sport: Sport will be on a Friday in Term 4, with Stage 2 and 3 students walking to Clarence Town Pool for Swimming for Sport. A permission note will be sent home this week. Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students will be doing sport at school with a combination of ball skills, games and gymnastics. Stage 2 students will walk to the pool at 9:30 and return at 10:45 for Fruit Break and Stage 3 will have an early Fruit Break and walk to the pool from 10:45 and return for 12:00pm Recess. Miss Bunn and Mr Lofts will be the accompanying teachers in Term 4. Reminder:

School Uniform for Term 4 is:

Green shorts/skorts with yellow piping

Green and yellow/red Unisex shirt

Green broad brimmed hat

School shoes/Joggers, preferably black

White socks

Remember we are still in our transition period so the check summer dress for girls and grey

shorts/green school polo shirt for boys, are still acceptable. However, bike shorts and white shirts

are not a part of the uniform at CTPS. Year 6 students are able to wear their Year 6 T-shirt on

Monday’s and Friday’s.

2021 Placement in Year 7 – Selective High School Applications

Applications for current year 5 students for placement in Year 7 in a selective high school in 2021 are now open and will close on the 11th November 2019. Stage 3 Public Speaking 2019 The next round for Public Speaking will be held Term 4 on Wednesday 6 November. Our speakers will be Beth West, Madelyn Bagnall, Deynah Bruce, Jessica Felstead and April Hensley-Turner. Good luck students. Our winner from last week was Aurora Greenaway. Congratulations!!! Stage 2 & 3 Swimming for Sport Year 3-6 students will commence swimming for sport on Friday 25 October. This program will run until Friday 13 December 2019. The children will walk to and from the pool with a class teacher and will need to bring $2.50 pool entry (or a season pass) and bring their swimmers, towel, hat, sunscreen and a rash shirt.

Surf Fun Day – Friday 15 November 2019

Year 3-6 students will be attending a Surf Fun Day at Blacksmiths Beach on Friday 15 November.

This course is conducted by fully qualified lifesaving personnel from the Hunter Surf Life Saving

Education Unit. During the course of the day students will learn about beach safety, providing

them with valuable skills and information. The cost of this excursion is $27 per student which

includes the cost of beach instructors and bus travel. All permission notes and payments are to

be returned to school ASAP. Please contact the school if you have any questions regarding this

program.

Presentation Day – Wednesday 4 December 2019

Our annual Presentation Day will be held on Wednesday 4 December at 9.15am in our school

hall. All parents and families are invited to attend and celebrate our students’ achievements in

2019.

Year 6 Farewell – Thursday 5 December 2019

Our Year 6 Farewell will be held in our school hall on Thursday 5 December from 6.00pm –

8.30pm. Invitations were sent home with students last week. The cost for catering is $30 per

person which includes drinks, nibbles, dinner and cake for dessert. If you have any questions,

please contact the school.

Kinder Enrolments 2020 To assist with our planning for 2020 and Kinder Orientation sessions, if you or someone you know has a child intending to start Kindergarten at Clarence Town Public School next year could you please contact the office to register your child. Tawny Awards

As part of our PBL we have a Tawny Award process where students are recognised for consistent

positive behaviour. Students can bring in there Merit Awards and Happy Notes to receive Tawny

Awards, as follows:

Three Merit Awards or Happy Notes or any combination of each = White Tawny Award

Three White Tawny Awards = Gold Tawny Award

Three Gold Tawny Awards = Tawny Badge

Our canteen still requires two volunteers for Wednesday 6 November, Wednesday 27

November and two volunteers for Monday 2 December. If you are able to volunteer in our

canteen on either of these days, please contact the school asap. A notice will be placed

on Skoolbag app of the decision.
