CIRCLE WINE & SPIRITS | 10 X 10 SPRING WINE SALE 2015

spain 2013 Valminor Albarino Rias Baixas List $15.99, Sale Price $12.99 WA: “Copious aromas of caramelized citrus, honey, white peach and apricots jump from the glass of this aromatic, light to medium-bodied Spanish white. With tart acids, good delicacy, and a hint of orange rind, this dry, crisp 2013 Albarino can be drunk as an aperitif or with an assortment of seafood dishes over the next 12 months.”

2012 Bodegas Ordonez Nisia Verdejo Old Vines Rueda List $17.99, Sale Price $14.99 Rated 90 Points, Steven Tanzer’s IWC: “(partially aged in large French oak casks): Pale, green-tinged yellow. Pungent citrus and melon aromas are complicated by talc, mineral and fresh herb nuances. Light-bodied and gently sweet, offering intense orchard fruit and honeydew flavors and a touch of salty minerality. Finishes on a sappy nectarine note, with very good focus and cling.”

2010 Cellers Baronia del Montsant Cims del Montsant List $14.99, Sale Price $11.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “The 2010 Cims del Montsant, a blend of 65% old vine Garnacha and 35% Carinena aged in French barriques for five months, comes from a different vineyard than the “Roure.” It has a lifted, very pretty, quite floral bouquet of bright red fruit, strawberry pastille and blood orange that is sensual and feminine. The palate is medium- bodied with a firm backbone, good depth of fruit with mulberry and dark plum flavours towards the focused finish. This would probably benefit from another year in bottle. Drink 2013-2018.”

2012 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton Campo de Borja List $39.99, Sale Price $31.99 Rated 93 Points, WA: “Bodegas Alto Moncayo started in 2001 as a collaboration between importer Jorge Ordoñez, American importer Dan Phillips, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland and others. Located near the town of Borja, the 210 acres of vineyards are head-pruned, old Grenache vines planted at 3,000 feet above sea level in poorly nourished soils of slate, clay, chalk and quartzite. They make a number of cuvées, the most famous being the more expensive Alto Moncayo and the Aquilon. Their inexpensive offering is the 2012 Veraton, a 100% Grenache aged in 60% new French and 40% American oak for 17 months before being bottled without filtration. It is a powerful, full-throttle, pedal-to-the-metal red boasting a dense purple color, and a sweet blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, lavender, licorice and earth notes intermixed with a touch of new oak. Stylistically, this is a modern, massively intense, rich wine that over-delivers in many ways. However, it is not for consumers looking for shy, restrained and delicate wines. It should rink well for a decade.”

Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez Tinto Pesquera Ribera del Duero List $45.99, Sale Price $36.99 Rated 92 Points, WA: “The 2010 Tinto Pesquera Crianza is raised for 18 months in 90% American and 10% French oak. It is bestowed with a ripe bouquet of dark plum, cassis and dried violets that is well defined and becomes more generous with each swirl of the glass. The palate is succulent on the clean, pure entry. There is good weight in the mouth with layers of cassis and blackberry fruit, . . . a very agreeable Crianza. Drink now-2017.”

2007 Vinedos Y Bodegas Pablo Menguante Garnacha Seleccion Carinena List $24.99, Sale Price $19.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: “The 2007 Menguante Garnacha Seleccion was sourced from the same vineyards but spent 10 months in new French oak. Opaque purple in color, it proffers a brooding bouquet on sandalwood, incense, espresso, lavender, black cherry, and blackberry. Considerably more structure than the regular bottling, with greater density and incipient complexity, it will benefit from 2-3 years of additional bottle age and provide pleasure through 2022.”

germany 2008 Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Mosel List $45.99, Sale Price $36.99 Rated 90+ Points, WA: “Pungent suggestions of thyme and lavender join more typical apple blossom and heliotrope, apple and vanilla in the nose of the Joh. Jos. Prum 2008 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett. . . . The palate here suggests a near-weightless yet intense floral distillation underlain by vivid wet stone. A classic youthful example of Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett, it will blossom short term as it emerges from its fermentative funk, not to mention over the next 20-25 years, though right now the corresponding Bernkasteler and Graacher are more refreshing and dynamic. Limited.

2009 Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Mosel List $45.99, Sale Price $36.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: “Alluring scents of honeysuckle and clover mingled with yeastiness; bittersweet notes of apple pip and skin, render the Prum 2009 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett an invigorating treat. Very subtly creamy, it nevertheless puts its emphasis on refreshment and clarity of flavors, with stony mineral character and inner-mouth floral perfume clearly discernable through gossamer folds of fruit. This finishes with terrific persistence yet understatement. A particularly restrained sense of sweetness and efficacious acids suggest to me a wine that could be enjoyed more in its first 3-5 years than is usually the case with Prum Rieslings. But it ought to keep well for at least 15 years.

2011 Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Mosel List $45.99, Sale Price $36.99 Rated 93 Points, WA: “Prum’s 2011 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett is a tad higher in residual sugar and corre-spondingly lower in alcohol than its immediate stable mates, but as one would expect from this great site, if anything the taste impression is drier. A ravishing nose of heliotrope and honeysuckle, Normandy cider and wet stone establishes the common themes for a palate performance that unites delicacy, juiciness and creaminess to an uncanny degree that only a few of the best Mosel vineyards and their prime caretakers can capture. Mouthwateringly lingering and compelling of the next sip, this rarified illustration of Mosel Kabinett virtue will reward you over the next quarter century.

2013 Leitz Rheingau Riesling Dragonstone List $21.99, Sale Price $17.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: “From the Drachenstein vineyard far above the village of Rüdesheim the 2013 Dragonstone is a more reductive and aromatic style of Riesling offering brilliant fruit aromas of white peach, pineapples, ripe apples, and lemons all mingling with a cool and slate-like aromatic background enhanced with herbs. Medium- bodied on the palate the wine starts sweet but the sweetness is directly absorbed by the mineral piquancy that characterizes the wine even more and takes it over the tongue into a salivating finish of great delicacy and elegance. This is pure and piquant Riesling from one of the most fascinating spots in the Rheingau that was re-cultivated by Josi Leitz. These vines have slowly arrived at an interesting age that can now give the resulting wines real character. The 2013 is probably the finest and most complex Dragonstone Leitz has produced so far and I am really looking forward to follow the wine from this dramatic spot.

2010 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Kabinett Trocken Pfalz List $27.99, Sale Price $22.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “The Koehler-Ruprecht’s 2010 Kallstadter Steinacker Riesling Kabinett features high-toned dis-tilled fruit allusions including mirabelle and kirsch, accompanied by smoky black tea and hints of mothball. In short this displays the sort of wacky esters frequently encountered at this address (more often in its ripest dry Rieslings) that drive some self-styled purists and friends of reductive winemaking crazy. There is also a bit of sheer yeastiness conveying fresh complexity. Juicy and energetically interactive on the palate, this finishes with very discreetly integrated sweetness, and with vintage-typical citric (lime and grapefruit) brightness driving its whirl of high-toned flavors.”

2011 Immich-Batterieberg Riesling Kabinett C.A.I. Mosel List $22.99, Sale Price $17.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “Genuinely dry . . . emphasizing levity, precision of flavor, and genuine interactivity. The vividness and lusciousness of flower-garlanded white peach and lime are every bit as much Mosel archetypes as are this wine's mouthwatering salinity, wet stone undertone, and shimmering sense of transparency to nuances that can only - for lack of any better covering term - be called "mineral." This exceptional value should serve well for at least the next 3-4 years.

2009 Chateau d’Or et de Gueules “La Bolida” Costieres de Nimes List $37.99, Sale Price $29.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: “A 100% Mourvedre cuvee from 80- to 100-year old vines that spends one year in foudre and one year in barrel is the Costieres de Nimes La Bolida. The bottled 2009, which was tasted last year from barrel, is as out-standing as I expected. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of blueberries, blackberries, roasted meats, bouquet garni and melted asphalt. This complex, rich, full-bodied, solidly made effort possesses excellent ripeness, but none of the rusticity or kinkiness that Mourvedre can sometimes exhibit.” Think Bandol, only a better buy . . .

2014 J. Mourat Collection Fiefs Vendéens Mareuil List $16.99, Sale Price $13.99 Fiefs Vendéens is an appellation established in 1984, located in the zone of the western Loire Valley, with a wine-growing tradition that stretches back to Roman times. Mourat’s Collection red is from the Mareuil sub-appellation, and made from 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Pinot Noir and 20% of the local Negrette grape. The vineyard’s proximity to the Atlantic coast, just 20 miles away, shows its influence in this wine’s juicy, ripe and crisp red fruit character, and its slightly lower alcohol (12.5%). This is a wonderful discovery for us and would recommend serving this wine ever-so-slightly chilled with simple summer fare on warm days.

2012 Domaine Terres Dorees / Jean-Paul Brun Moulin-a-Vent List $31.99, Sale Price $25.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: “The 2012 Moulin-a-Vent Terres Dorees is also consistent with my previous note. Aged in 4- to 5-year-old wood and cement foudres, it demonstrates superb detail on the tart red cherry nose, while the palate is supremely well-balanced with refined tannins and a nonchalant, refined finish of cranberry and Morello. Delicious. Drink now-2019.”

2013 Domaine Johann Michel Cornas List $45.99, Sale Price $36.99 Rated 91-93 Points, WA: “I loved these 2013s, and they both offer fantastic depth in richness in the vintage. Black raspberry, creamy licorice, toast and spice all flow from the 2013 Cornas, and it has full-bodied power, sweet tannin and integrated acidity. Aged 16 months in new demi-muids, enjoy this polished, elegant and seamless beauty through 2028. Johann Michel continues to produce brilliant wines from the steep, granite infused slopes of Cornas. Both his 2012s, which I raved about last year, and his 2013s are some of the most successful in appellation.”

2012 Daniel et Julien Barraud Pouilly-Fuisse “Sur La Roche” List $49.99, Sale Price $39.99 Rated 93 Points, WA: “The 2012 Pouilly-Fuissé la Roche comes from vines located in a sunny exposition at around a

350-meter altitude. It has a more mineral-driven bouquet: tense but tightly wound with touches of limestone and chalk.

The palate has very good depth and cohesion, with hints of marmalade and orange peel, flecks of cumin and white pep-

per toward the vibrant finish that is guaranteed to leave the customer satisfied.”

2012 Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru “La Fussiere” List $47.99, Sale Price $38.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “The 2012 Maranges 1er Cru La Fussiere offers crisp dark berry, brambly fruit on the nose with fine delineation and clarity, very Beaune-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, a keen thread of acidity that binds together a tight, linear finish. There is an abiding sense of weightlessness here, which lends it precision and tension. This is another great 2012 to add to Bachelet-Monnot’s line-up.”

2013 Domaine Thomas & Fils Sancerre “La Crele” List $29.99, Sale Price $23.99 The Thomas family has been growing grapes and making wine in Sancerre since 1670. Today, ninth and tenth generation winegrowers Jean and Ginette Thomas, and their children, Julien and Christale, farm 19 hectares. Theirs are not lean Sancerres; rather, both their terroir and the house style favor wines of great amplitude and texture, with long, lingering finishes. The Thomas' holdings encompass all three soils types in the appellation: flinty soils, Kimmeridgian limestone, and gravelly slopes of caillottes. The Sancerre “La Crele” is a magnificent single-vineyard bottling showing off lush flavors of pear, with a silken palate of exotic fruits.

highly-rated, under $20 2013 Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County List $19.99, Sale Price $13.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “It is always with some degree of sentimentality when I taste Ferrari-Carano’s Fumé Blanc as this was my Mother’s favorite wine until she passed away in 2002. She even refused to eat at restaurants that didn’t carry it. The excellent 2013 Fumé Blanc exhibits plenty of honeyed melon, white peach, poached pear and other tropical fruit notes, underlying crisp acidity and a creamy, surprisingly flavorful mouthfeel.”

2013 Espelt Garnacha Old Vines List $13.99, Sale Price $11.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “This stunning custom cuvee from Eric Solomon was made with the help of Frenchman Jean-Marc Lafage. From granite soils around Spain’s Costa Brava, just two kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea, some of the grapes in this wine come from old vines dating back to 1900. The 2013 Garnacha Old Vines (100% Grenache aged four months in new and used French oak) boasts remarkable intensity as well as richness along with lots of strawberry, wild, briery mountain fruit and hints of spice, flowers, underbrush and Mediterranean herbs. The sweet tannin, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and luscious personality have resulted in a gorgeous wine to enjoy over the next several years.”

2011 Thorne-Clarke Shotfire Shiraz Barossa List $19.99, Sale Price $15.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “The outstanding 2011 Shotfire Shiraz (aged 14-16 months in American and French hogsheads) delivers considerable value and flavor authority. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of blackberries, black currants, licorice, graphite and subtle barbecue smoke. Rich, fleshy and dense, it is best consumed over the next 3-4 years.”

2013 Charles Smith Kunfu Girl Riesling Columbia Valley List $15.99, Sale Price $12.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “Clean, fresh and incredibly pure, the 2013 Charles Smith Riesling Kung Fu Girl is shockingly good given the price (and the volume, as they produce a massive amount of this cuvee). Lychee, citrus, mint and classic minerality all show here, and it’s medium-bodied, beautifully balanced and finishes cleanly, with perfectly integrated acidity and only subtle sweetness. Enjoy this rock star effort over the coming year or two.”

2012 Tait The Wild Ride Barossa Valley Shiraz/Grenache/Mataro List $22.99, Sale Price $19.99 Rated 91 Points, Steven Tanzer’s IWC: “Ruby-red. Fresh cherry and blackberry aromas show very good clarity and energy. Offers intense, juicy cherry and floral pastille flavors that put on weight and spiciness with aeration. Shows im-pressive power without undue weight and finishes spicy and long, with sneaky sweetness and just a trace of dusty tannins.”

2012 Willm Alsace Riesling Réserve List $14.99, Sale Price $11.99 Rated 90 Points, Wine Spectator: “Crackling with bright acidity, this sleek white offers a fine array of yellow and green apple, crunchy white peach, mango, blood orange and anise, with a lip-smacking, mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2020. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.”

2012 Les Vignes de Bila-Haut Cotes du Roussillon Villages List $25.99, Sale Price $16.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: "The 2012 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes de Bila Haut is another smoking effort that will top anyone’s val ue list. A tank-aged blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, it is me dium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and balanced, with impres sive amounts of blackberry and currant-styled fruit, herbs, pepper and smoked earth aromas and flavors. Showing more minerality with air, it’s a no-brainer purchase and will drink nicely for 5-6 years or more.”

2012 Badenhorst Family Wines Secateurs Red Blend Swartland List $17.99, Sale Price $14.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “. . . very well-defined, quite sumptuous bouquet with vibrant raspberry, dark cherry and mineral notes that have really opened up in the last 12 months. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins. This is very well-balanced with great delineation on the finish. Drinking beautifully now.

2013/14 Badenhorst Family Wines Secateurs Chenin Blanc Swartland List $17.99, Sale Price $14.99 Description: “. . . Those marzipan and lime-flower scents seeming to have ebbed over the last 12 months. The palate is vibrant and lively with citrus lemon, nectarine and candied orange-peel notes, with a twist of bitter lemon on the finish. Fine.”

2011 A. A. Badenhorst Family Wines White Blend Swartland List $39.99, Sale Price $31.99 Rated 92 Points, WA: “The 2012 Family Red Blend, which had just been bottled, has a warm and inviting bouquet of red plums, squashed ripe strawberries and faint touches of fennel. It is well defined and really starts to blossom with aeration. The palate is focused and more tightly wound than other vintages that I have tasted. There is a little more backbone here, more linear than I expected. Dusky red plum and cranberry, salted licorices, fennel and thyme all come together nicely, although I suspect that it will benefit from a couple of years in bottle. Another success for Adi Badenhorst, albeit in a more restrained style.”

2012 A. A. Badenhorst Family Wines Red Blend Swartland List $39.99, Sale Price $31.99 Rated 93 Points, WA: “For reasons unknown, I have never reviewed the 2011 Family White Blend. Tut tut...it's a flippin' gorgeous white blend (of 36% Chenin Blanc, 22% Roussanne, 15% Grenache Blanc, 10% Grenache Gris, 7% Viognier, 6% Verdelho, 3% Colombard and last but not least, 1% of good old Chardonnay. The nose is clean and precise, therefore my first conclusion is some masterful blending because in the wrong hands such a diverse blend can blank each other out. But here are wonderful scents of lemon curd, apricot jam, vanilla, pistachio and walnut. The palate is very well-balanced with a crisp line of acidity. The Chenin Blanc component comes through strongly on the front, but that troop of other grape varieties follows through on the back. If you want to know why Adi Badenhorst is a great winemaker, sign up here.”

2013 DeMorgenzon Maestro White Blend Stellenbosch List $26.99, Sale Price $21.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “For reasons unknown, I have never reviewed the 2011 Family White Blend. The nose is clean and precise, there-fore my first conclusion is some masterful blending because in the wrong hands such a diverse blend can blank each other out. 2011 DeMorgenzon Maestro Red Blend Stellenbosch List $26.99, Sale Price $21.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “The 2011 Maestro Red is a blend of 41% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec that sees 14 months in oak. It has an opulent, glossy bouquet of small dark cherries, boysenberry and iodine that has a real juiciness to it. The palate is medium-bodied with nicely composed tannins and plenty of cedar and dark chocolate-tinged black fruit. It retains fine focus with a touch of bell pepper toward the finish emanating from the Cabernets. This is a fine Bordeaux blend that should age over the next 6-8 years. Drink now-2020.”

south africa (voortgegaan)

2011 DeMorgenzon DMZ Syrah Stellenbosch List $18.99, Sale Price $15.99 Rated 89 Points, Stephen Tanzer’s IWC: “(blended with 7% mourvedre and 5% grenache): Bright ruby-red. Musky aromas of boysenberry, huckleberry, smoke and dark chocolate. Suave and sweet on the palate, offering complex fla-vors of red berries, coffee, mocha and tree bark. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins. Excellent value.”

2013 DeMorgenzon DMZ Chardonnay Stellenbosch List $19.99, Sale Price $15.99 Rated 87 Points, WA:: “The palate is clean and fresh with plenty of green apple, pear and subtle dried mango notes with a light, slightly effervescent finish. This is a respectable Chardonnay for the price.”

2013 Paul Cluver Chardonnay Estate Elgin List $21.99, Sale Price $17.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: “The 2013 Chardonnay comes from the estate’s 15.32 hectares of vine planted between 1987 and 2004 on Bookveld shale. Picked March 1-19, it is fermented in French oak barrels of which 20% is new, with reduced bâtonnage compared to previous years as Andries wanted to avoid too much creaminess in the wine, especially because there was slightly more malolactic fermentation. It has a typically gorgeous bouquet with touches of lemon curd, patisserie, apricot blossom and shaved almond. The definition is superb. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity: touches of mango and lemon peel on the entry with more exotic notes such as passion fruit and pineapple coming at the finish. Perennially one of my favor-ite Chardonnays from South Africa, this is no different.”

2014 Paul Cluver Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc List $16.99, Sale Price $13.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “Bottled two weeks prior to my visit, the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc already sports a very intense nose with fresh green apple, pear and nettle aromas. The palate is animated on the entry with crisp nettle and gooseberry notes, plenty of spiciness coming toward the finish. This comes from the Semillon (10% of the blend) that was fermented in German foudres. Great potential here.”

2013 Paul Cluver Riesling Noble Late Harvest Elgin, 375ml List $25.99, Sale Price $20.99 Packed with apricot, spice and honey characteristics on the nose. The mouth feel is full and impressively rich but with superb balance, the result of elegant Riesling acidity. The aftertaste seems to linger forever. This wine will gain complexity after 2 to 5 years in the bottle. The perfect way to end a meal, or enjoy with flavourful cheeses.

2013 Buitenverwachting Sauvignon Blanc Bayten Constantia List $18.99, Sale Price $15.99 Rated 90 Points, WS: “Very solid, with a crunchy feel along the edges and pure white peach, flint and honeysuckle notes racing along.”

2012 Newton Johnson Southend Chardonnay Hermanus List $24.99, Sale Price $19.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: “. . . the 2012 Southend Chardonnay has a lovely, caressing bouquet with white peach and apricot blossom aromas. The palate is well-balanced with white peach and a touch of almond on the entry. There is a fine line of acidity and a delightful apricot and marmalade-tinged finish. This is simply delicious. Drink now-2016.”

2012 Newton Johnson Felicité Chardonnay Western Cape List $11.99, Sale Price $9.99 Newton Johnson's preference leans towards a style that is crisp, focused, taking care not to over deliver on fat and overripe fruit. They also steer clear of any oak flavoring looking to highlight pretty, floral aromas and uncomplicated fresh fruit flavors of peach.

the new greece 2013 Domaine Gerovassiliou Malagousia Macedonia List $29.99, Sale Price $23.99 Rated 90 Points, WA: “. . . From 27 year old vines, . . . tank-fermented and tank-aged. . . . This fresh and lively bottling is simply delicious. If you like fresh, un-oaked wines, this will make you happy this summer.”

2013 Estate Argyros Assyrtiko Santorini List $21.99, Sale Price $17.99 Rated 90 Points, WA. Crystal-clear yellow color, Distinctively flavored with citrus overtones. The relatively high acidity of Assyrtiko gives it a crisp freshness, while the vineyard’s extremely low performance offers body, structure and substance.

2013 Gai’A Assyrtiko Wild Ferment Santorini List $29.99, Sale Price $23.99 Assyrtiko Wild Ferment is made from 100% Santorini Assyrtiko whose fermentation takes place with only the naturally occurring yeasts found on the grapes. Once fermentation takes its course, 20% of the wine is aged in a blend of wood (oak, acacia, etc…) and then blended with 80% stainless steel fermented Assyrtiko.

In its youth, it's a beauty and a very nice bargain, too. It may not be everyone's "typical" pink, though, if you're thinking "sweet and soft." It's time to give this fine pink some props. It has certainly shown its stuff.”

2012 Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico List $27.99, Sale Price $22.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: “The 2012 Chianti Classico Berardenga (100% Sangiovese aged in medium-sized barrel) opens to pretty color saturation and richness. The bouquet is immediately redolent of Sangiovese-driven aromas of red cherry, white chalk and grilled herbs. The earthy component is especially attractive. This Chianti Classico will appeal to those who like a genuine and stripped-down red wine from sun-drenched Tuscany.

2013 Sandrone Dolcetto d’Alba List $26.99, Sale Price $21.99 Wine Spectator: “This is rich and packed with cherry, blackberry and violet flavors, with a glycerol texture and an anise candy note that lingers on the finish.”

2009 Cascina Corte Dogliani Pirochetta Vicchie Vigne List $29.99, Sale Price $23.99 100% Dolcetto. The color is ruby-purple with flashes of

violet. The bouquet is deep and revealing fruity aromas

of cherries, plums and currants, that are echoed on the

palate and which are accompanied hints of licorice. The palate is round and full with ripe

tannins and gives way to a long and persistent finish. This is a serious wine with the structure and personality to stand up

to meat dishes, hearty soups as well as flavorful cheeses.

italian kings 2010 Gaja Barbaresco List $329.99, Sale Price $263.99 Rated 94 Points, WA: “Smack from the start, the 2010 Barbaresco shows full-on Gajissimo personality with irresistible opulence and intensity, magically contrasted against remarkable smoothness and finesse. Everyone wants to know his secret. The wine delivers seductively rich concentration and integrated oak that is offset by a delicate portfolio of chiseled mineral, dried berry fruit, Spanish cedar, crushed herb, anisette and blue flower. Fruit is sourced from 14 vineyards in Barbaresco. It already leaves a mark, but will reward those who wait. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.”

2008 Oddero Barbaresco Gallina List $69.99, Sale Price $55.99 Rated 90 Points, Wine Spectator: “Bright and focused, delivering cherry, strawberry and menthol aromas and flavors. The lean profile shows tension, yet his remains fresh and lingers on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2023. 400 cases made.”

2009 Oddero Barolo List $57.99, Sale Price $46.99 Rated 92 Points, WA: “The 2009 Barolo sees fruit sourced from various townships and presents a masculine note of musky spice and leather in front of dried cherry and cassis. A zesty touch of acidity brings levity and energy to the mouth and helps to bring an extra kick of brightness to the finish. The wine boasts age-worthy qualities but probably shouldn’t be put away for too long. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”

2010 Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca List $79.99, Sale Price $63.99 Rated 94+ Points, WA: “The 2010 Barolo Marenca offers a gorgeous interpretation of the mighty Nebbiolo grape with beautiful tones of crushed rose, balsam herb and cola that rise with confidence from the glass. That vertical lift carries with it a slew of secondary aromas of sweet spice and almond skin that help to flesh out the bouquet. The tannic grip is firm but not astringent and the wine hits the palate in a straight and determined manner. This is an exceptional wine with a long aging future. Drink: 2016-2030.”

2009 Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino List $79.99, Sale Price $63.99 Rated 91 Points, WA: “The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a classic rendition that is layered high with dark fruit, plum, grilled herb, licorice, cola and pressed flowers. The effects of those aromas are long-lasting and persuasive especially as they wrap sensually around the palate. With 30 months in large oak casks, the wine also shows impressive balance for the vintage with a touch of heat that is offset by the brightness of the fruit and a cleansing touch of acidity. It is a good candidate for drinking over the next five to ten years. Drink: 2016-2024.”

2004 Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino Riserva List $143.99, Sale Price $115.99 Rated 94 Points: “The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (from vines in Podernovone) is a magnificent wine. Super-ripe, racy dark raspberries, flowers and sweet spices emerge from this impeccably balanced Brunello. In 2004 the Riserva reveals gorgeous transparency and clarity to match the generous fruit. The wine’s inner sweetness, richness and depth are all first-rate, while the firm tannins convey an impression of elegant classicism. The 2004 Riserva shuts down quickly in the glass but the fruit is so primary the wine should have no trouble aging. Regrettably, I never met Gian-ni Brunelli and tasting his 2004 Riserva makes me doubly sorry for that. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.”

california whites 2012 Prisoner Wine Company Blindfold Napa White Blend List $32.99, Sale Price $24.99 Rated 93 Points, WA: “A distinctive combination of 35% Chardonnay, 20% Roussanne, 20% Viognier and small quantities of Riesling, Semillon, Marsanne and Grenache Blanc, the 2012 Blindfold is a sleeper of the vintage. Reminiscent of the Sine Qua Non whites from further south, it bursts with honeyed, caramelized white fruits, rose petals and pineapple. Medium to full-bodied with good acidity, brilliant purity and a delineation that is uncommon for a wine with so much flavor, this beauty should drink well for 2-3 years. I hope we see more blends such as this.”

There is a greenish hue to its gold color, always a positive sign. More Chablis-like than a typical full-throttle Sonoma Chardonnay, this medium-weight effort should drink well or several years.”

2012 Beringer Luminus Chardonnay Oak Knoll District Napa Valley List $44.99, Sale Price $32.99 Rated 93 Points, WA: “A 100% barrel-fermented, relatively new offering is the 2012 Chardonnay Luminus, which is made from Dijon clones from the Oak Knoll appellation. This cuvee is put through partial rather than full malolactic, and that appears to preserve a lot of vibrancy and freshness.”
