BORDEAUX, A REGION OPEN TO ThE WORLD Of SPIRITS & INTERNATIONAL WINES
Bordeaux has a long-standing tradition of openness to the world, enjoying a strategic location at the crossroads of major north-south roads and on the Atlantic Arc.
EuropEan winES Wines produced in the European Union represent almost half of world production. Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Hungary and Romania with a long wine-producing tradition now compete with such newcomers as Russia, Greece and Turkey.
Thanks to Vatel’s and Eurhodip’s partners, Vatel Bordeaux will open the doors of European wines to you.
winES oF thE wolrd The world wine scene is constantly changing, with traditional regions such as Argentina, California, Australia and South Africa alongside emerging ones (China, India, Brazil, Thailand, etc.) keen on finding their place in the sun.
Vatel Bordeaux and their partners in Argentina, California, China, and Thailand will give you access to renowned international experts who will be pleased to help you discover the wines of the world.
FrEnch winES Many countries view France, an indisputable world leader, as the country to beat. No other has the climate and soil to produce such an impressive and varied selection of great wines. France is the gold standard for sparkling, white, red and dessert wines. Most of the premium grape varieties and famous wine styles started out in France.
Discover the vineyards and wines of the most important French regions: Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Languedoc-Roussillon, the Loire Valley, Provence, and the Rhone Valley.
SpiritSLearning about spirits is also part of the program, since regions such as Cognac and Armagnac are close to Bordeaux.
You will also become familiar with eau-de-vie (brandy) produced from fruit (apples, pears, grapes, etc.), whiskey, rum, vodka, and other spirits.
Bordeaux
GLOBAL WINE PRODUCTION (2000-2012)
Global wine production down in 2012, Europe is declining, while most other regions are growing. Is Europe’s wine sector in danger?
Amounting to 252 million hectoliters, global wine production nevertheless decreased by 6% in 2012. This was partially due to a very small harvest in Europe, but also reflects a long-term trend. France, Italy and Spain are still the biggest producers. But the overall tendency is towards a decline in European wine production and a rise in New World countries and China.

PROfESSIONALS’ EXPECTATIONS
nEw StratEgic StakES In today’s complex, globalized and competitive environment, the wine & spirits industry needs to employ intelligent, adaptable people with an international profile to face future challenges in terms of:
Competition: producers from Europe, California, Argentina, Chile, South Africa and Australia make sure to protect their expertise maintain their leading position, while newcomers from “emerging” countries such as China, India, Thailand, and Brazil, among others, are anxious to progress.
Consumption: By extending their range and being innovative, professionals are doing their best to meet the expectations of new consumers (women, young people) and to keep pace with new consumption patterns (in bars, night clubs, on the go, etc.) and new formats (cans, tubes etc.) without losing their traditional customers.
Legal constraints: In the context of a world economic crisis, national authorities tend to protect their industries and markets by imposing new taxes, as well as introducing new regulations and fees for alcoholic beverages that drastically impact wine & spirits exporters.
Distribution Channels: In light of the incredible growth of the Internet, everyone from the biggest wine estates to small family-run businesses have to adapt and find the right business model, as well as new ways of communicating, marketing and selling their wines.
Innovation: New ways of consuming wine have motivated the industry to adapt their packaging (tubes, cans, attractive labels etc.).
New activities: To enhance their primary activity, wine & spirits producers now offer a wide variety of activities such as wine tourism and accommodation in the vineyards, health and beauty cures (such as “vinotherapy”), etc.
Sustainable growth: Since it has become important to measure producers’ carbon footprint, the wine and spirits industry now has to analyze and cope with their impact on the planet.
Health and bio development: Organic farming is relatively new in the wine industry, but it is shaping up to be a critical issue in the future.

The unique BordeAux ArT oF liVing
A combination of splendid architecture, numerous cultural influences, world-famous vineyards, fine food and a temperate climate attracts about 3 million visitors a year to Bordeaux. The city has maintained its enviable and unique lifestyle despite an outstanding, far-reaching urban development program.
By 2017, thanks to a new high speed train link, Bordeaux will be only 2 hours from the heart of Paris.
A uneSCo World heriTAge SiTe
The historic city center and riverside were completely renovated starting in 2007. Old cellars were transformed into trendy bars and flamboyant 18th century buildings were renovated and preserved. Thanks to tremendous efforts, the city of Bordeaux was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also qualified as a “City of Art and History” by the French government in 2009.
gASTronomy & nighTliFe
Nightlife in Bordeaux naturally owes its colourful, festive atmosphere to the region’s outstanding range of wines and delicious local cuisine. The prestigious Bordeaux vineyards, the largest fine wine producing area in the world, have flourished ever since the Middle Ages. Bordeaux cuisine also features very high standards, with superb seafood as well as a variety of cakes and sweets with evocative names (canelés, praslines de Blaye, croquants de l’estuaire, etc.). People in Bordeaux do not wait for the weekend to have a good time. Thursday evening is a traditional time for enjoying nightlife. Once the sun goes down, streets in the city centre and along the river are filled with a festive spirit. Everywhere you look, there are restaurants, sidewalk cafés, wine cellars, music bars and trendy nightclubs.
eVenTS in BordeAux
Bordeaux celebrates its wines and its river in alternate years. Every month of June since 1998, the banks of the Garonne (Bordeaux’s “Port of the Moon”) are the venue for popular festivities. Wine, food and culture are celebrated in the presence of representatives from sister cities such as Bilbao and Hong Kong.
Some of the events to which you will be invited:
• Agora: a biennial event focused on European architecture and design
• Novart: a contemporary performing arts festival
• Quai des Sports: for urban sports such as skateboarding
• Escale du Livre: one of the six largest book fairs in France, featuring a partnership with Quebec
• Bordeaux International Fair: over 300.000 visitors a year discover the latest trends in various fields (“Home & Garden”; “Leisure”, the Aquitaine Agricultural Show” and the international section.
• Bordeaux International Film Festival: a major event for film lovers
• Design Tour: exhibition of works by designers, up-and-coming creators, and famous artists
A green & SAFe CiTy
Bordeaux is a showcase for sustainable development as applied to all fields of human activity: eco-friendly transportation, reduced automobile traffic, well-preserved of historic buildings and monuments, limited urban sprawl, etc.
For instance, the 2013 Danish Copenhagenize index ranks Bordeaux as 4th most bicycle-friendly city worldwide. Ten percent of the city’s inhabitants commute by bike.
