Champagne Pol Roger

www.bayridgewine.com

“I could not live without Champagne; In victory I deserve it, in defeat I need it.”

—Winston Churchill, 1946

Pol Roger Champagne Extra Cuvee de Reserve Brut Non Vin-tage, List Price $54.99, BRWS Price $37.99. “Smooth, harmonious wine that

has enough personality to be a vintage Champagne. It has plenty of body, . . . a creamy texture and a smooth, buttery finish.” Rated 92 Points, Wine Spectator. “A particularly good value.” Rated 90 Points, Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs Cuvee de Reserve Champagne Brut 2002, List Price $125.99, BRWS Price $99.99. “White flowers, lemon, slate

and chamomile are some of the notes that burst from the glass in Pol Roger’s 2002 Brut Blanc de Blancs Extra Cuvee de Reserve. A bright, tightly coiled wine, the 2002 comes across as quite fresh and vibrant, especially within the context of the year. Sweet floral and minty notes run through the precise, crystalline finish. Although the 2002 is absolutely delicious today, I am intrigued to see how it might age. It is utterly brilliant today. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.” Rated 94 Points, The Wine Advocate

Pol Roger Winston Churchill Champagne Brut 2000, List Price $254.99, BRWS Price $199.99. “The first thing that is evident about the 2000 Brut

Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is its finesse and total silkiness. The 2000 is a rich, creamy and deeply expressive Winston Churchill. I don’t see the 2000 being an especially long-term ager, but it is wonderfully radiant and open today. Hints of pastry, spice, apricots and succulent ripe pears blos-som on the expansive, broad-shouldered finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.” Rated 94 Points, The Wine Advocate

Staff Picks: Phil Altherr Hartford Court Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2011 List Price $35.99 per bottle. Robert M. Parker, Jr. states of Hartford Family Win-ery: "These are always some of the most exciting as well as diverse offerings in my tastings, and I always walk away shaking my head at just how good they are." Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people, and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast. I met Don Hartford at an informal tasting in Baltimore in 2010, and what struck me immediately was how down to earth the man was and how stunning

his wines were that day. So, 2011 when my wife, Lauren, and I went to California wine country on one of my semi-annual trips, a visit to Hartford was quickly ar-ranged. We were having a lovely tasting, when I saw Don Hartford pop into the room. I re-introduced myself and he, in turn, introduced me to Hartford’s winemaker, Jeff Stewart. It was harvest and they were headed to check out some grapes and asked us along . . . we of course said, “Yes!” We spent over an hour with them, sampling grapes, tasting from barrels, and falling in love with the wines of Hartford Family Winery. Hartford (pictured) loves Pinot Noir. He feels that Pinot Noir makes the most seductive red wine, notable for its supple, silky texture. Pinot Noir is also known for expressing vineyard site characteristics in a transparent manner. PA

Tasting Note: The wine's nose is elegant and complex with effusive black cherry up-front and underlying notes of violet, toasted bread, cumin and faint notions of freshly plowed earth. Flavors in the mouth are berry, cherry, sweet dried cranberries, clove and allspice. Texturally, the wine is silky with nice acidity and a minerality that drive the wine's finish. Outstanding!

Staff Picks: Todd Ross Domaine Marcel Lapierre Morgon 2012 List Price $25.99 per bottle. What makes Domaine Marcel Lapierre’s wines so fascinating to me is that they are simply grape juice. There are no external yeasts added and the wines are neither chaptalized nor filtered (which sometimes leaves them a little turbid, but I don’t mind that), and they are almost never sulfured (and then only very lit-tle). There is a compelling com-plexity to Lapierre’s Morgon 2012, a mix of deep earthiness and an almost savory meatiness that is a foil to the wine’s brimming red cherry and raspberry fruitiness. The texture of the wine is caressing to the palate, and the finish is complex and invigorating, showing depth, nuance and purity, but never missing the joyous nature of the Beaujolais appellation. Truly, sunlight captured in a bottle! With care, bottles of this wine will cellar for up to a decade but I suspect most will get drunk up long before they have that chance! (Cellar for about a year then enjoy).

For the past number of years, Mathieu Lapierre has been winemaker at the do-maine and has pickup up convincingly where his father left off. His late father, Marcel Lapierre (pictured), was at the fore-front of the natural wine movement. When he took the lead at his family’s domaine in the 1970s, he started out making wine us-ing the same methods as did everyone in Europe during the post-war era, employing labor-saving chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. But, by 1981, Marcel Lapierre began to reject this. With the urg-ing of local enologist Jules Chauvet, Marcel

Lapierre adopted organic viticulture, eliminating the use of chemicals in the vineyards, and re-turned to the age-old method of manually tilling his plots with horses. With the calming of the worldwide demand for Beaujolais Nouveau—once a quaint village tradi-tion that exploded into a worldwide phenomenon in the 1970s—and the public ever-hungry for undervalued bargains, there is once again a chance for this region and its best wines and wine-makers to rise to the attention of wine lovers. Staff Picks: Katie Harper Mullineux White Wine Swartland South Africa 2012 List Price $25.99 per bottle. Having spent some time in South Africa’s wine country this year I thought it only ap-propriate to feature a wine from a pair of the many people I had the pleasure of spending time with. Meet Chris and Andrea Mullineux. A husband and wife team, these two young gun winemakers are putting South African wines on the world map and compet-ing with some of the best wines being pro-duced this decade. Their goal is to produce “clean” wines that people will enjoy drinking with good company and food rich in culture. The 2012 Mullineux Swartland White Wine is a blend dominated by old vine Chenin Blanc (76%), Viognier and Clairette. Each varietal brings something different to the party, giving the wine its layers and complexity. The Chenin Blanc is whole-cluster pressed from grapes grown on 80-year-old goblet-trained bush vines. Bush vines are perfectly suited to the terroir in Swart-land. They are low to the ground with a deep root system allowing them to capture and retain

water while also keeping the grapes cool during oppressive African heat waves. With only 370 hectares of old vine Chenin Blanc remaining in South Africa, Chris and Andrea are meticu-lous in their field managing. Each vine has exactly five “arms” with only two clusters on each to maximize the con-centration and flavor of the Chenin Blanc. A dollop of Viognier is added to the final blend, adding contrast with beautiful floral aromatics, stone fruit and peach nectar flavors. A very small amount of Clairette is also blended into the final wine to balance the fla-

vor profile and tie everything together. I like to think of it as the bow—a small accent on the final package—and it makes all the difference. It has always been important to me to sell wine that comes from an identifiable place. Wine with a soul. While the market is flooded with brands of wines that have no specific place of origin, it is nice to have a wine from a family-run facility. Mullineux produces wine that I am happy to take home, enjoy with my family, and which tells the story of two winemakers doing it right. KH

8. Riebeek Cellars Pino-

tage Swartland 2011, List Price $9.99, BRWS Price $8.49. "The

2011 Riebeek Pinotage could be chilled like Beaujolais, as this is a lighter-styled wine, with hints of Christmas fruitcake, plum sauce and cherries all present in a very attractive, spicy style. It is round and well-made, and for some-one who usually dislikes these wines intensely, this is quite drinkable and seductive. It should be consumed over the next year." Rated 87 Points, The Wine Advocate.

9. Riebeek Cellars Char-

donnay Swartland 2012, List Price $9.99, BRWS Price $8.49. This un-oaked Chardonnay displays a brilliant green-gold color. The style is dry but fruity. ceous style, this Sauvignon Blanc also offers tropical undertones of gooseberries that add fruit to the palate. Matching Forks and Corks Pairing Basics

Use these simple guidelines, prepared by the good folks at California’s Kendall-Jackson Wine Estate, to per-

fectly pair wine to all your holiday meals with confidence!

Choose Similar Flavors Similar food and wine flavors complement each other.

Example: Sole with lemon sauce and Sauvignon Blanc both have citrus flavors.

Choose Similar Weight and Texture Similarly weighted food and wine complement each other. Food and wine can be light, medium or heavy-bodied.

Example: Lobster and Chardonnay are both medium-weight and rich so they complement each other.

Choose the Same Sweetness Level Wine should be equal to or higher in sugar than the dish.

Example: Roasted pork with apple glaze pairs beautifully with Riesling.

Salt Needs Crispness Crisp wines balance salty flavors.

Example: A crisp Sauvignon Blanc balances salty olives and feta cheese.

Pair with the Sauce Pair the wine to the sauce served. Example: Light citrus sauces pair with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Example: Heavy cream and mushroom sauces are ideal with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Example: Red and meat sauces match Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah.

No Sauce? Pair with the Meat Match wine to meat, fish or poultry when serving without a sauce.

Example: Pinot Noir tastes great with duck.

Spicy Foods Sweeter wines offer relief from spicy foods.

Example: Riesling pairs well with Asian cuisines.

Tannins Need Fat to Balance Out Tannic wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon cut through the coating that fat leaves in the mouth.

Example: Cabernet pairs great with steak.

Look: Pair by Color Nature has color-coded fruit and vegetables with the wine best suited to their flavors. Light wines - light foods; deeply colored wines - rich foods.

Example: Sauvignon Blanc is pale yellow and pairs well with citrus.

Consider Acid Levels

Like sweetness, wine should be equal to, or higher, in acid than the dish.

Example: Pinot Noir matches well with tomato tapenade.

Italian Wines Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo 2010, List Price $79.99, BRWS Price $63.99. “The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo is a timeless expression that embraces all the canons of great winemaking. This vineyard-

designate expression (Sangiovese and a small part of Cabernet Sauvignon are planted here) boasts a delicately floral side in 2010 with dried vio-

lets and blue flower that gracefully lift the bouquet. Beyond the floral tones are shadings of cassis, wet earth, anisette and tobacco. Like the other

wines of Fontodi, Vigna del Sorbo shows an ethereal side and inner elegance that is impossible to repeat elsewhere. It’s sure to develop bottle com-

plexity over the years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.” Rated 95 Points, The Wine Advocate

Fontezoppa Marche Rosso 2009, List Price $15.99, BRWS Price $13.59. 50% Sangiovese, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Dark ruby red with violet reflections. Notes of red wild berries on the nose with hints

of violets, roses, carnations and tobacco. The rich fruit flavors and gentle tannins envelope the palate. Smooth and well-poised with a long finish.

Finalist for Gambero Rosso Tre Biccieri.

Elio Altare Barbera d’Alba 2012, List Price $26.99, BRWS Price $21.59. After maceration and temperature controlled fermentation, Altare’s 2012 Barbera d’Alba spent only five months in French barriques; all this to pre-

serve the wines copious violet and black cherry aromas and dark red fruit flavors. Ripe, generous and full-bodied on the palate, there is ample acid-

ity. Considered the “peoples’ wine” in Italy, this Barbera is an excellent match to pasta with tomato sauces, fatty cheese, salamis and antipasto.

Firriato Chiramonte Nero d’Avola Sicilia IGT 2010, List Price $16.99, BRWS Price $13.59. “The 2010 Nero d’Avola Chiaramonte bursts from the glass with lovely inner perfume and sweetness in its red berries, flowers, mint, licorice and

spices. A short period of aging in cask gives the Chiaramonte a little extra juiciness and sweetness. This fabulous entry-level Nero d’Avola from Firri-

ato is best enjoyed in its youth, while the fruit is fresh and vibrant. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2015.” Rated 88 Points, The Wine Advocate

Villa Prata Brunello di Montalcino 2004, List Price $44.99, BRWS Price $35.99. “The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is an attractive, mid-weight offering laced with perfumed red cherries, spices, tobacco and underbrush. The aromas

and flavors come together quite nicely in this understated, elegant Brunello. The wine gains pretty inner sweetness with time in the glass, while fine,

silky tannins caress the palate on the finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-2019.” Rated 91 Points, The Wine Advocate

Cantine Farro Piederosso Campi Flegrie 2012, List Price $18.99, BRWS Price $15.19. The Perfect Pizza Wine! Rich and pure, deliciously complex without being overly complicated, this volcanic born-and-bred red over delivers. Expect chewy, textured red/black fruits and lots of juicy power. A great compliment to pasta with grilled vegetables, olives, eggplant and garlic. Piedirosso means "red feet," a name that reflects the bottom of the vine which used to be red - similar to the red feet of a pigeon.

Spain

Pago de los Capellanes Tinto Ribera del Duero 2009, List Price $44.99, BRWS Price $35.99. “The

2009 Crianza has a lovely, rounded dark plum and balsamic-tinged bouquet that unfurls with hints of wild heather and crushed violets. The palate is

medium-bodied with orange peel, tart red cherries and a hint of dark chocolate, the finish nicely composed and showing impressive persistency and

focus. Recommended. Drink now-2017.” Rated 91 Points, The Wine Advocate

Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva 2008, List Price $27.99, BRWS Price $22.39. “The 2008 Reserva has dark

cherry, cassis and graphite on the nose. The palate has a sappy nose with blackberry, raspberry and a touch of soy towards the finish. The tannins

are ripe and quite “thick,” lending the 2008 admirable substance considering the vintage. Drink 2015-2030.” Rated 91 Points, The Wine Advocate

Pazo San Mauro “Paco & Lola” Albarino Rias Baixas 2011, List Price $18.99, BRWS Price

$15.19. “The 2011 Paco & Lola Albarino has a light bouquet with touches of fresh lime, apricot and a touch of chalk dust. The palate is crisp

and taut on the entry. It is underpinned by notes of green apple, pear and ginger. . . . Drink now-2013.” The Wine Advocate

Bodegas y Vinedos Maurodos San Roman Toro, List Price $69.99, BRWS Price $41.99. “The 2009

San Roman comes from 45-year-old bush vines or older in San Roman, Morales de Toro, Arjujillo, Villaester and El Pego between 720 and 760 me-

ters and sees 24 months in new and used French (70%) and American (30%) oak. It offers a very seductive bouquet with luscious red berry fruit –

raspberry, wild strawberry infused with crushed violets that open with aeration. The palate is full-bodied and very well-balanced, ripe succulent

tannins, plush blueberry and black cherries forming the core followed by a silky, ripe, sensual, velvety smooth finish. Modern in style, but extremely

well-crafted, this is a sensational, delicious Toro red. Drink now-2018+.” Rated 96 Points, The Wine Advocate

Bodegas Naia Naia Rueda 2012, List Price $15.99, BRWS Price $11.99. 100% Verdejo with 12% of the wine

fermented and aged sur lie in French oak, 88% in stainless steel. Expressive, this white offers peach, pear, clementine and light herbal flavors that

mingle nicely in a light but racy texture. On the palate it has surprising richness (from the lees aging), terrific concentration, and a lengthy finish.

Celler Besllum Xabec Montsant 2008, List Price $18.99, BRWS Price $14.99. “Celler Besllum’s opaque

purple-colored 2008 Xabec is a blend of 50% Carinena and 50% Garnacha aged in new French oak for 14 months. Aromas of pain grille, mineral,

lavender, black cherry, black plum, and licorice inform the nose of this already complex, concentrated Montsant. Savory, ripe, and succulent, it has

enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years although this outstanding value can be approached now.” Rated 92 Points, The Wine Advocate

Luna Beberide Mencia “Finca la Cuesta” Bierzo 2010 , List Price $22.99, BRWS Price $18.39. “The 2010 Finca La Cuesta (meaning the slope vineyard) is pure Mencia aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and bottled unfiltered. It starts off

with a dark-ink, licorice and peat nose, but then the palate reveals fresher red-fruit notes, with an overall sensation of an austere, cerebral wine. It

should age gracefully, as it has the stuffing and balance to do so. Drink 2014-2029.” Rated 90 Points, The Wine Advocate

Greece’s Alpha Estate Alpha Estate Malagouzia Axia 2012, List Price $20.99, BRWS Price $16.79. “The 2012 Malagouzia Axia was tank fermented and sourced from Alpha’s vines in the “Turtles” sub-region of the Amyndeon plateau at 620-710

meters in altitude. It comes in at 13% alcohol. Rather full bodied and relatively lush relative to what I see for some bottlings from the grape, this has

a lovely mouthfeel, nice texture and well integrated components, finishing with crispness and purity. The herbaceous notes common to many bottlings

are in the background here. It has an elegant and persistent feel, lingering longer on the finish that you might think from the first impression. Seen a

bit later this year, it certainly seems more expressive, more transparent and more open. It really grew on me as it aired. It may last longer than I

think, but there is no reason to hold this and it may not hold long at peak. Drink it this summer when it will be at its best. Drink now-2015.” Rated 90

Points, The Wine Advocate

Alpha Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2012, List Price $19.99, BRWS Price $15.99. “The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is tank fermented, from Alpha’s vines in the “Children” and “Alpheta” sub-regions of the Amyndeon plateau at 620-710

meters, aged sur lie. This is just lovely. I’ve often admired Greek Sauv Blancs—one of the international grapes the country tends to get right—but this

is one of the better ones for sure, perhaps even better than last year’s. Showing fine purity of fruit and quite clearly being Sauvignon Blanc, this is

well integrated and well balanced, yet persistent and flavorful on the finish. However long this holds in theory, noting that this has good acidity and

rather fine concentration for the grape, you will do yourself and the wine a favor by drinking it young and fresh, rather than viewing it as a cellar

selection. Drink now-2015.” Rated 91 Points, The Wine Advocate

Alpha Estate Xinomavro Hedgehog Vineyard 2009, List Price $25.99, BRWS Price $20.79. “The 2009 Xinomavro Hedgehog Vineyard is from a high-altitude site (690 meters), aged in French oak for 12 months and held back for another 12

months in bottle before release. If the Axia Syrah-Xinomavro is not the big bargain point in this lineup, this relatively new bottling surely is. I was not

quite expecting the power – it actually seems more intense than the 2008. Earthy, bright and gripping, with both acidity and tannin on the finish, this

has a charmingly rustic feel to it at a very fine price point. Like many of Alpha’s wines, it will need a food matchup. It isn’t a sweet, sip-on-its-own

type of wine. But there is a lot of STUFF going on here for this rather modest price range. I loved its earthy complexity. Drink 2014-2022.” Rated 90

Points, The Wine Advocate

Alpha Estate Axia Syrah-Xinomavro 2009, List Price $22.99, BRWS Price $18.39. “The 2009 Syrah – Xinomavro Axia is revisited this issue for a check-up. I’ve been singing the praises of this inexpensive bottling that has become

quite a bargain. I wasn’t quite as convinced early on by this 2009, although it was really good. It now shows quite well with an elegant mid-palate,

a crisp, slightly earthy finish and beautiful structure. That serious backbone stands it in good stead. Now that it has settled down, it is proving that it is

beautifully constructed and a great food wine. I wanted another glass. It deserves a small uptick. Drink now-2020.” Rated 90 Points, The Wine Ad-

vocate

The Rhone Valley Domaine Grand Venuer Lirac Clos de Sixte 2010 1.5 Liter,

List Price $49.99, BRWS Price $39.99. 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre. “Domaine Grand Veneur's 2010 Lirac Clos

fruits interwoven with garrigue and licorice. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.” Rated 92 Points,

“This is one of the most ambitious estates as well as burgeoning negociant operations in Cha-

Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 30 2011, List Price

$46.99, BRWS Price $35.99. 100% Syrah. “The fabulous 2011 Cornas Granite 30 is one of the great wines of the vintage.

Elegant, with a black/blue color, sweet tannin and loads of spring flowers, crushed rocks,

smoked game and blackberry fruit, this textured, loaded, supple, accessible 2011 should drink

nicely for 15 or more years.” Rated 93-95 Points, The Wine Advocate

“Vincent Paris is a child of Cornas and his biodynamically run estate now encompasses around

17-18 acres, from which he fashions three remarkable cuvees, the Granite 30, Granite 60

Vieilles Vignes and an offering from the well-known parcel of La Geynale. Paris has enjoyed

three consecutive remarkable vintages (as have a number of the finest Cornas producers),

2009, 2010 and 2011. The Granite 30 generally comes from the lower hillside parcels of a

lieu-dit called Mazards with soils that are mostly decomposed granite. These are also his young-

est vines. You would never know that by tasting what Paris has produced in 2011 and 2010.”

Hugl Weine Zweigelt 2012 1.0 L, List Price $11.99, BRWS Price $9.59. Despite its relative youth, Zweigelt is

actually an Austrian classic. This variety was created in 1922, when Dr. Fritz Zweigelt crossed two grapes - St Laurent and Blaufränkisch. Originally,

it was intended for the new variety to be called Rotburger, referring to the place where it was born, Klosterneuburg. But this name never took hold,

and instead, Zweigelt was named after the man who was the key in its development. Today, Zweigelt is the most widely planted red variety in

Austria, growing in nearly 9% of this country's vineyards. It is a robust grape, highly resistant to dryness, frost and various diseases. The wine boasts

a concentrated color, fruity and spicy aromas, cherry flavors. Full-bodied, smooth and round, the wine is an ideal food companion.

Bazzini Barbera Provincia di Pavia IGT 2011 1.0 L, List Price $11.99, BRWS Price $9.59. Barbera

wine has its historical roots in Italy, where today it remains the third most widely-planted red varietal, after Montepulciano and Sangiovese. The

fruit is naturally high in acid, which it retains very well, even in hot climates. These characteristics make it a perfect accompaniment to most foods.

Barbera is deep and purplish black in its youth. It can exhibit an attractive ripe aroma of red fruit, currants or blackberries. This family-style drink-

ing wine is among the favorites on many Italian dinner tables. Try our One Liter Barbera with your favorite foods. Suggestions: hot antipasto, pasta

é fagioli, coal oven pizza, or pasta.

Bazzini Pinot Grigio Provincia di Pavia IGT 2012 I.0 L, List Price $11.99, BRWS Price $9.59. Pinot Grigio is the most consumed imported white wine in the US. It can be quite distinguished, coming from producers who devote attention to grow-

ing and vinifying, especially in the Oltrepo Pavese region. Bazzini Pinot Grigio is delicately fragrant with lightly pear aromas and well-rounded

with good acidity. Try our One Liter Pinot Grigio with your favorite foods. Suggestions: salads, prosciutto di Parma, veal, and seafood. Pinot Grigio

is an excellent choice for cocktails.

Colmant Brut Cap Classique Brut Reserve, List Price $29.99, BRWS Price $23.99. "The Non-vintage Brut

Reserve is a blend of 52% Pinot Noir and 48% Chardonnay based on the 2008 vintages blended with reserve wines from 2007 and 2006 (25% of

the blend), aged for 30 months on the lees. It has a very fine pettillance in the glass. The nose is very well defined with crushed stone, oyster shell

and the subtle perfume of fine lees coming through with aeration. The palate is very crisp and lively on the entry with vibrant acidity, a citrus thread

from start to finish, and though it is not a powerful Cap Classique, it is wonderfully poised with great persistence on the fresh lime and Granny Smith-

tinged finish. There are many alternatives to Champagne, and South Africa is no exception with some fine “Method Cap classique.” Jean-Philippe

Colmant hired winemaker Nicolas Follet to create a small range of impressive sparkling wines; they eschew malolactic fermentation and practice

extended lees aging." Rated 92 Points, The Wine Advocate

plays the poise and precision that the bling bling Barsac could only dream about. It was proof that this legendary wine is now back where it belongs:

in amongst the greatest sweet wines of the world. Even against Denis Dubourdieu's decadent L'Extravagant 2003, for me, the superlative Vin de

Constance 2007 is the better wine. It offers a scintillating bouquet that is beautifully defined with mandarin, wild honey, lavender and Seville or-

Chateau Puech-Haut Le Prestige Coteaux du Languedoc 2011, List Price $20.99, BRWS Price

$16.99. "A sensational offering from proprietor Gerard Bru, the 2011 Prestige is the estate’s least expensive wine. . . . With Bru’s top Reserve

wine selling for nearly $100 a bottle, the Prestige cuvee is an outstanding value. Interestingly, Bru has had three of the greatest winemaking consult-

ants on Planet Earth working for him, first Michel Rolland, followed by Claude Gros and now Philippe Cambie. A blend of 60-75-year-old vine Gre-

nache (55%) and 40-year old Syrah (45%), all grown on limestone soils dominated by the famous large rocks (galets roules) also found in parts of

Chateauneuf du Pape. The wine is aged in concrete tanks prior to being bottled unfiltered. Some of the vineyards are farmed organically and others

biodynamically. The wine exhibits a tremendous perfume of sweet raspberries, spring flowers, forest floor, truffles and lavender as well as a beauti-

ful texture, a full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning velvety tannins and purity, and a long finish. This is the ‘real deal.’ Drink it over the next 4-6 years."

maximize complexity of the final wine. Roughly 60% of the wine is aged in Allier oak, only 10% of which is new. The remaining 40% of the wine is

aged in stainless steel to preserve clean varietal character. Medium-bodied with notes of green apple, pear, mineral and just a touch of smoky oak
