“Rebuild my Church”
The pictures that we have just seen from Paris of the terrible fire in Notre
Dame might remind us of the fire in York Minster. The repairs there mean
you would never really know that such terrible destruction had taken
place, hopefully the same will be said of Notre Dame in future years.
One of the things that has been said about the fire in Paris is that the
church is really living people, living stones, not a building. But whilst
true, this masks the emotional attachment to a building which has been
prayed in and in which important services marking births, marriages and
deaths have taken place. Church buildings are often the most beautiful
building in a community, so it is not surprising that for all these reasons
we want to keep them in as good condition as possible.
St Francis heard a voice from a crucifix in a chapel saying, “Rebuild my
Church,” and he took this literally, building up the ruined chapel with his
own hands. He also restored several other churches. But over time he
came to consider that the most important part was to rebuild the church
as a whole, which had itself fallen into disrepair.
We also have this dual task, to keep our buildings in good shape and to
restore the church as a whole and of course this usually begins with
restoring our own faith. We may hope that as Notre Dame is restored, so
the faith of its people may also be rebuilt. Best wishes, Jonathan Cooper
Parish Passes for York Minster
I have ten Parishes Passes which I can lend out to
anyone wishing to visit York Minster this year. The
Parish Pass entitles the bearer to one adult free
admission to York Minster and the Undercroft for
sightseeing during normal opening hours. It excludes
entry to the Central Tower and evening events. Please
present it to a member of staff on arrival. The passes
are intended to be used then returned to me as they can
be used multiple times. Please contact Kate Lindo on
01609 882263 or 07970 441129 or by email:

Competition – A bell
Press report from Welbury WI for April 2019 Next time we drive across the Moors
or visit the coast our members will
understand why the land and cliffs
are the shape we see today thanks to
Roger Osborne who using flip charts
and coloured pens explained the
geology that lies beneath. We
learned how times long gone and
recent movements of ice and water
can be traced in the current
landscape of North Yorkshire. The
competition was for a Yorkshire
landscape photograph. Next month
we will be entertained by the
Northallerton Handbell Ringers and
the competition will be for a bell
