FFrom the Pastor’s Desk The vast majority of us will be celebrating Thanksgiving Day with our families, friends, and maybe a stranger or two at our table. We will tell stories: rehash family history, rekindle family traditions, share news of what has happened these past few months. As a community of faith, we are mindful of those who do not have an invite on Thanksgiving Day, nor a home to call their own. These painful realities remind us that God’s Kingdom is far from being realized in our communities.
As Catholics, we are asked to think of this holiday not exclusively in civic terms but in spiritual terms as well. I was taught that one’s sense of gratitude correlates with the level of joy one has in one’s life. A positive start to your Thanksgiving Day is to join us at the 9:00 a.m. Mass: To publicly acknowledge one’s blessings before God and neighbor; To pray for those who never properly acknowledge their blessings and who seem to be imprisoned by their self-interests; To pray for those who have gone before us, whose very absence is present at the Thanksgiving Day table; To pray for family members who no longer practice the faith; To express our gratitude for the Eucharist, which is the spiritual sustenance that gives the grace the believer needs to accept the potential joys of the day; To acknowledge that there might be a challenge or two as we gather as family and friends.
I came across this litany of thanks,
Despite the sea of troubles across the globe, and economic and social problems at home . . . . for harvests and harpists and hearths, for heart surgery, harmonicas, harp seals and health. No Thanksgiving ever celebrated a world without care. . . . for silicon chips and software, for sunshine and showers and shopping and sales, for Shakespeare and shallots and schools. For the roller-skate revival and the wall coming down, for blue jeans that fade and dreams that don’t, we thank Thee, Lord. . . . for progress and proms and promotions, for prosciutto and prunes and pizza — and peace. For a Pope who never stops being the voice for the voiceless… “Your baby’s just perfect,” and “The surgery was a success,” and “You’re mortgage was approved,” we thank Thee, Lord. . . . for elections and electricity, for elephants and Einstein, for elevators and elms, we offer thanks for this season. And for debates and rebates, art and artists, reason and restraint, we thank Thee, Lord. . . . for weddings and waffles and watch dogs and woks. So too, for solar heat and soul food, anything chocolate and everything without calories. For homes and homecomings, for Christmas and crayons, for fleece and flamingos and flags, we are truly grateful, Lord. . . . for healing beyond hurt, for love beyond measure, for life beyond life, and mysteries beyond comprehending. But most of all we are grateful that “neither death nor life . . .nor principalities nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the Love of God.” “Thanks Be,” Chicago Tribune (Adapted.)
So, what would you add?
Blessings,
Father Brian

Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
“…giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.” (Colossians 1:12)
God wants us to be happy! Instead of looking at the Ten Commandments as being restricve and telling us what we can’t do, look at them as guides for living a joy-filled and peaceful life. Most of our problems arise when we put our own needs first or spend most of our me trying to acquire “things.” Instead, try pung God first in all things. Ask Him how He wants you to use your gis.
