akit kaya ang tawag sa “weather

forecast” ay taya ng panahon?

Ang panahon ba ay tulad sa

pagtaya sa lotto? Pwedeng manalo,

pwede ring matalo?! Kaya pala laging

nasisisi ang PAG-ASA. Minsan kasi, kung

hindi huli ay mali ang kanilang taya ng

panahon. Pero sakto ang babala na

binigay nila patungkol sa bagyong

Yolanda! Sayang, sana ay nagkamali ang

taya kay Yolanda.

Noong bata pa ako, tag-ulan ang

buwan ng Mayo kaya kadalasan ay

binabaha ang aking kaarawan. Ngayon,

sa mga huling buwan ng taon ang dating

ng maraming bagyo! Para bang

pinipigilan ang pagdiriwang dahil sa

trahedya dulot ng mga bagyo. Kaya ito

na ang awit ng marami nating

kababayan:

“Malakas ang ihip ng hangin, may

baha sa bawat tanawin, ang tibok ng

puso sa dibdib, para bang lilikas na

tayo.”

May kasabihan tayo na ang buhay

ay weather weather lang. Kung ang

buhay ay weather weather lang, e di

tinatayaan din ang buhay?! Sabagay, sa

kaisipang Filipino, ang buhay ay parang

gulong- minsan sa ilalim, minsan sa

ibabaw. Pero bakit kaya mabilis ang ikot

pababa at pag nasa baba na ay mahirap

namang umakyat? Kaya maraming

bitter sa kapaskuhan! Ang theme song

nila,

”Pasko na naman ba’t ang tulin ng

araw, Paskong nagdaan di pa nababa-

yaran.”

Hay panahon... paano na naman

kaya ang Pasko?

Iyan ang malaking problema! Na-

kasalalay ang pagdiriwang ng Pasko sa

ganda ng panahon, dami ng pera at

kung anu-ano pang material at

pansamantalang bagay! Ang paningin ng

karamihan ay nasa mga maningning,

makukulay, matatamis at nagmamanti-

kang mga bagay at pagkain.

Pero sa katunayan, ang paningin ni

Jesus noong unang Pasko ay nakatoon

sa Krus... sa kaligtasan ng sanlibutan at

sa buhay na walang hanggan para sa

tao. Nanabik ang kaniyang puso sa ta-

mang panahon... nang ang Diyos at tao

ay muling mabubuklod. Pinaghandaan

ni Jesus ang sandaling iyon. Iyan ang

Pasko para kay Jesus.

Ikaw? Tatayaan mo ba ang Pasko

gaya ng taya sa panahon? Kung ang

gusto mo ay sakto at tunay na

masayang Pasko, yakapin mo ang

paghahari ni Kristo sa buhay mo! Mag-

bago man ang panahon, tiyak na panalo

ka kay Kristo.

Christmas is celebrated in so many different ways around

the world and yet so easily we forget the true meaning of an

event that shaped and changed the world. People of all

nationalities and cultures have been drawn to God’s light as

revealed in Jesus, whose coming to earth changed and

changes the way we think and act.

The prophet Isaiah foresaw the coming of Jesus into the

world – ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given … he will

be called Wonderful Counsellor, … Prince of Peace’ (Isaiah 9:6

NIV 1984).

A well-known Christmas carol expresses so beautifully

the longing that people still have – ‘Come, thou long-expected

Jesus, born to set thy people free …’ (The Song Book of The

Salvation Army 79 v 1).

The world has never known, and will never know, a light

more powerful than the light Jesus brought. John described it

as ‘The true light that gives light to every man, and … the

world did not recognise him … his own did not receive him.

Yet to all who received him … he gave the right to become

children of God …’ (John 1:9-13).

Despite this wonderful reality, there are still far too many

people living in darkness and despair, suffering and fear, hav-

ing lost the will to live, for they see no future. They have lost

all sense of purpose and direction because they refuse to turn

to ‘the Light’.

The Bible presents Jesus as the coming of light into the

world – light which outshines anything we can ever imagine.

We are surrounded by flashing lights, neon signs, illuminated

billboards – all designed to attract us, to draw us in. But there

is no light that compares to the light of Jesus, for it draws us

into the joy of knowing him as our personal Saviour.

The impact of Christ’s coming into the world is still in

evidence. People are experiencing change and transformation,

finding deliverance and freedom, peace and forgiveness. The

message of the angels still resonates powerfully in our hearts

and lives today.

Christmas is a wonderful opportunity for us to be not

only witnesses to ‘the Light’ but also carriers of ‘the Light’.

We must celebrate and give thanks for the true meaning of

Christmas: ‘He came to give us life in all its fullness … He [‘the

Light’] came to banish death and doubt and darkness, He

came to set his people free’ (SASB 274 chorus).

May the ‘Light of the World’ shine into your hearts this

Christmas – and then out to others so that the world will be a

brighter place in the coming year.

May God richly bless you as you join with us in giving thanks to

God for the birth of our Saviour.

Ang Pasko ay ipinagdiriwang sa buong mundo sa ibat-ibang

kapamaraanan ngunit napakadali nating nakakalimutan ang tunay na

kahulugan ng pangyayaring ito na humubog at nagbago sa mundo.

Ang tao sa ibat-ibang bansa at kultura ay napalapit sa liwanag ng Dios

na naihayag sa pamamagitan ni Jesu-Cristo, na sa kanyang pagparito

ay nagpabago at patuloy na nagbabago sa paraan ng ating pag-iisip

at pagkilos.

Pinahayag ni Propeta Isaias ang pagdating ni Jesus sa sanlibutan

- “ Sapagkat sa atin ay ipinanganak ang isang Sanggol na lalaki… at

tatawagin Siyang Kamangha-mangha, Tagapayo…. Prinsipe ng ka-

payapaan. (Isa. 9:6)

Katulad ng isang kilalang pamaskong awitin, ‘Dumatal ka, Jesus

na kay tagal nang hinihintay, isinilang upang palayain ang iyong sang-

katauhan...”

Wala pang nalaman, at walang malalaman ang mundo na li-

wanag na kasingmakapangyarihan ng liwanag na dala ni Jesus. Inilara-

wan ni Juan; ‘ Nagkaroon ng tunay na ilaw, sa makatuwid baga’y ang

ilaw na lumiliwanag sa bawat tao na pumarito sa sanglibutan, ngunit

hindi Siya nakilala ng sanglibutan. (Juan 1:9-13)

Sa kabila nitong kahanga-hangang kaotohanan, marami paring

nabuhay sa kadiliman at kalungkutan, pagdurusa at takot, nawalan

na ng kagustuhang mabuhay dahil hindi nila nakikita ang kinabuka-

san. Nawalan ng say-say at dereksyon ang kanilang buhay dahil

patuloy nilang tinatanggihan ang tunay na Ilaw.

Ipinapahayag ng Biblia na si Jesus ang darating na Ilaw ng sanli-

butan– higit na maliwanag kaysa anumang kaya nating isipin. Tayo ay

napapaligiran ng mga kumukuti-kutitap na liwanag, mga ilaw galing

sa elemento ng neon, ilaw na nagpapaliwanag sa mga billboards,

lahat ng mga ito ay denesenyo upang tayo’y maakit at lumapit dito.

Subalit walang ilaw na maihahambing sa ilaw ni Jesus, sapagkat napa-

palapit tayo sa kagalakan na makilala sya bilang personal na

Tagapagligtas.

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…” so the song says. For us each in the

Philippines with the “bers” (the months ending in ber) out come the various

Christmas items for sale and this includes the background music of Christmas

Carols played through the large Department Stores.

Christmas will soon be upon us

and the Christmas Kettle “kick offs”

have commenced throughout the

Territory. For Colonel Robyn and I

Christmas will be different for us this

year – our first in Manila. Already the

fireworks are preparing us for a noisy

celebration.

It seems this time of the year is so

busy with many searching for the right

gifts. We have been reliably informed

that during November and December it

is not a good time to visit Divisoria!

Why? The crowds are so huge with

shoppers travelling from the provinces

that you can’t move around the various

shops.

Despite all the commercialism

what a great opportunity we have to

share the message of Christ’s coming

into the world. Whether we are actively

involved in static point collecting like

the Christmas kettle or community

Carol singing services or presenting the

Christmas message in some other way it

is our prayer that the Lord will give you

opportunities to share the reason for

Christ’s birth.

Charles Swindoll, writing in “The

Glory of Christmas” notes the following:

“In choosing those who would

represent Christ and establish his

church, God picked some of the most

unusual individuals imaginable: un-

schooled fishermen, a tax collector, a

mystic, a doubter, and a former Phari-

see who had persecuted Christians. He

continues to pick some very unusual

persons down through the ages. In fact,

he seems to delight in such surprising

choices to this very day.

Swindoll concludes his comment

with a statement:

So, let God be God. Expect

the unexpected.

In the Carol, ‘O Little town of Bethle-

hem’, Phillips Brooks reminds us of

something of God’s surprising gift to

humankind in the third verse:

How silently, how silently

The wondrous gift is given!

So God imparts to human hearts

The blessings of his Heaven.

No ear may hear his coming;

But in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive him, still

The dear Christ enters in.

(Song 86 verse 3)

part of God’s “surprising choices”. So let

Sabi ng isang pamaskong awit, “ It’s

beginning to look a lot like Christmas”.

Nagmumukhang Pasko na. Para sa atin dito

sa Pilipinas, pag sumapit na ang mga buwan

na nagtatapos sa “ber” marami nang

makikitang “sale” o bagsak presyong bilihin

kasabay ng matunog na pamaskong awitin

na maririnig sa mga naglalakihang pamilihan

o department stores.

Ang pagsapit ng pasko ay di na

mapipigilan, nagpasimula na rin tayong

magdaos ng maagang Christmas Kettle “Kick

Offs” sa apat na division ng ating Territoryo.

Para sa akin at kay Col Robyn, ang paskong

ito ay kakaiba kaysa sa dati naming

nakasanayan. Ito ang kauna-unahang Pasko

dito sa Maynila. Nagpasimula na rin ang

ingay ng mga paputok na naghahanda sa

amin para sa sa isang maingay at nakabibi-

nging selebrasyon.

Tila ba ang panahong ito ng taon ay

masyadong abala sa paghahanap ng

tamang regalo. May nagsabi sa amin na ang

magandang panahon para mamili sa

Divisoria. Bakit? Sapagkat napakara-ming

tao, siksikan kabilang na ang mga nang-

Maraming karansan ang nagpatibay sa aming pananam-

palataya at pagmamahal sa Diyos. Dito, ang ministeryo ay hindi

lang para sa mga Australians kundi pati sa ibat-ibang lahi. You

name it we have it here. Masaya dahil very multi-cultural ang

Melbourne. Hindi na kailangang pumunta sa Africa, South America,

Asia or Pacific Islands at maging Europe. Masarap maglingkod sa

Diyos bilang officer ng The Salvation Army.

Bawat lahi ay may paraan ng pagdiriwang ng kapaskuhan.

Tulad sa Pilipinas, ipinagdiriwang dito ang Pasko kasama ang

pamilya. Para sa amin, may inumpisan kaming tradisyon na tuwing

pasko ay may cake at kandila at kaming apat ay umaawit ng Happy

Birthday Jesus. Then, our two kids will blow the candle. We want

to instill these values into their lives that Jesus is the reason why we

have Christmas.

Summer ang Disyembre dito kaya hindi malamig ang aming

Pasko. Kasama sa pagdiriwang ng pamilya ang tinatawag na

Australian barbecue. Habang nagluluto ang iba ay may naglalaro

naman ng cricket sa bakuran. Siyempre, Masaya ang pagpapalitan

ng regalo.

Naalala ko noong bata pa ako, bihira lang ako nakatanggap ng

regalo dahil sa hirap ng buhay. Dito ay talagang maraming regalo

ang natanggap ko. Ngunit hindi ito ang tunay na nagpapasaya sa

Pasko. Ang mahalaga ay buo ang pamilya.Ang laging laman ng

aking patotoo dito ay ang mensahe ng awit: “Papasukin sa puso

mo si Kristo yan ang tunay na diwa ng Pasko.” Opo si Kristo and

tunay na dahilan kung bakit tayo nagdiriwang ng pasko. Nais mo

bang magingmas maligaya ang pasko mo sa taon na ito? Anyayain

si Hesu Kristo sa buhay at tiyak na tunay na liligaya ang pasko.

Maligayang Pasko sa inyong lahat !

caroling, o kaya nama’y nagbabahagi ng

mensahe ng Pasko sa ibang paraan, dalangin

namin na bigyan kayo ng Panginoon ng pag-

kakataon na ibahagi ang tunay na dahilan ng

kapanganakan ni Kristo.

Mula sa “The Glory of Christmas” o

“Ang Luwalhati ng Pasko” na sinulat ni

Charles Swindol, ganito ang sinabi:

Sa pagpili ng mga taong magrepre-

senta kay Kristo at magtatatag ng Kanyang

Iglesia, ang Dios ay kumuha ng ilang mga

taong hindi mo iisiping pipiliin Niya; mga

mangingisda na di nakapag-aral, maniningil

ng buwis, mapag-alinlangan, kahit ang

dating isang Pariseo na umusig sa mga

Kristiano. Sa pagdaan ng panahon, patuloy

pa rin Siyang pumipili ng mga may kakaibang

katangian. Sa katotohanan nakagugulat ang

mga katangian ng mga pinipili niya kahit na

sa ngayon.

Sinabi pa ni Swindol ang ganito Ha-

yaang ang Dios ay Dios, Asahan ang di

inaasahan.

Katulad din ng pamaskong awit na

“O Little town of Bethlehem” na sinulat ni

Philips Brooks, tayo ay pina-aalalahanan na

may sorpresang handog para sa sangkatau-

han. Sabi sa ikatlong saknong:

O kay tahimik, o tahimik

Nang ang dakilang handog ay ibinigay

Hinayag ng Diyos sa mga puso ng tao

Biyaya ng Kaniyang Kalangitan,

Wala mang nakarinig ng Kanyang

pagdating;

Ngunit sa mundong ito ng kasalanan

Kung saan may mga nagpapakumbabang

tatanggap sa Kaniya,

Ang Dakilang Kristo ay papasok.

Kayo at ako ang kumakatawan kay

Kristo, at tayo ay kabilang sa mga ”kataka-

takang pinili” ng Dios. Kaya hayaan ang Dios

ay Dios at asahan ang mga hindi inaasahan.

Ituon natin ang ating paningin sa higit na

mahalaga at ang mensaheng maari nating

ibahagi.

Mula sa aming tahanan ang pagbati

na nawa ang masaganang pagpapala ng Dios

ay sumainyo habang ibinabahagi ninyo sa iba

ang pagdiriwang ng kapanganakan ni Kristo.

Makikita ang epekto ng pagdating ni

Cristo sa mundo. Ang mga tao ay patuloy na

nakakaranas ng pagbabago, ng kalayaan,

kapayapaan at kapatawaran. Ang mensahe

ng mga angel ay umaalingaw-ngaw na may

kapangyarihan sa ating puso at sa ating

buhay ngayon.

Ang Pasko ay dakilang pagkakataon

para sa atin hindi lamang upang maging mga

saksi sa ’Ilaw’ kundi tagapagdala nito.

Ipagdiwang natin at pasalamatan ang tunay

na kahulugan ng Pasko: Siya ay dumating

upang bigyan tayo ng buhay na kaaya-aya,

Siya ay dumating upang pawiin ang

kamatayan, alinlangan at kadiliman.

Dumating s’ya upang palayain ang

sangkatauhan. (SASB 247 chorus)

Nawa ang ’Ilaw ng Sanlibutan’ ang

magliwanag sa inyong mga puso ngayong

Pasko– at mula sa inyo, patungo sa iba

upang ang mundo ay maging higit na

maliwanag sa darating na taon.

Masaganag pagpapala ng Diyos ang

sumainyo habang tayo ay sama-samang

nagpapaslaamat sa Diyos sa kapanganakan

ng Tagapagligtas.

Taong 2012 nang umalis kami sa Pilipinas para sa

bagong appointment dito sa Australia Southern Territory.

Sa kabila nito, laging laman ng aming puso at isipan ang

ating bansa.

Sa taong 2012 ay isinilang din ang pangalawa naming

anak na si Amaya (isang pangalang Filipina). Naging lubos

ang aming kaligayahan dahil bininiyahan kami ng hindi lang

isa kundi dalawang magagandang anak.

Sa kasalukuyan kami ay naka destino dito sa Preston

Corps ng Melbourne Central Division. Si Shaella at Amaya

ay nasa child care sa mga araw ng Lunes, Martes at Huwe-

bes upang mas lubos naming magampanan ang aming

tungkulin sa corps.

Chief Secretary Lieut. Colonel Bob Lee led The Salvation Army delega-

tion in the celebration of the golden jubilee anniversary of the National

Council of Churches in the Philippines. In this photo, the Chief Secretary

posed with the other leaders of the NCCP member churches.

The Salvation Army has been supporting the CHILD, an institution

founded by Ricky Reyes that provides temporary shelter for cancer

patients from the provinces who are undergoing treatment in Manila.

Posing for a photo are comrades and officers from Manila Central

Corps who attended the tenth anniversary of CHILD.

The Central Philippines Division held its Fastbreak 2 “Fire it Up”

youth camp focusing on evangelism and maintaining integrity in the

midst of the challenges that youth are facing today. Two hundred sev-

enty two young people attended including a delegation from Carindale

Corps, Australia East Territory. One of the guests, Pastor Clems

Guillermo of FEBC Family Matters posed with the delegates.

A colorful parade of costumes and talents was one of the highlights of

the Mindanao Island Division’s youth camp. Two hundred sixty seven

youth attended. The theme was “Jesus reign in me” with Majors Mike

and Susan Tandayag as guests. Following the camp was the Kettle

Kick Off at SM General Santos City. In the photo are delegates from

Lake Sebu Corps performing a native dance during the Kick Off.

The Visayan Island Division established a Youth Mission 2030

Team to train and involve young people in the evangelism and

discipleship programs of the division. The group held a success-

ful evangelistic concert in Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City. With the

Mission Team is Lieut. Colonel Beverley Woodland, Territorial

Secretary for Business Administration.

Cabayaosan Corps in the Northern Luzon Division celebrated their

Thanksgiving and Corps Anniversary. During the Holiness Meeting,

comrades brought their crops and gifts as expressions of their gratitude to

God. There was much rejoicing as eighteen soldiers were enrolled. Other

activities included a Fun Run and an evangelistic meeting.

RELIEF OPERATION

The Salvation Army has spent

almost five million pesos for distribu-

tion of food and basic necessities in

Tacloban and another four million

pesos is allocated for Panay island.

Aside from providing food, The

Army collaborates with the Christian

Medical and Dental Association od the

USA (CMDA) to provide health care

services in Baybay Leyte District

Hospital. Executive Officer Dr. David

Stevens led the first team of medical

practitioners. Our very own Dr.

Miriam Cepe coordinates the medical

services in the affected areas.

Major Andrew Ruthven from

Australia and Matthew Beatty from

the USA Central Territory also came

to reinforce our emergency services.

Another heartmoving gesture

was the arrival of the USA Western

Territory media team in order to help

find the relatives of Cadet Reynaldo

Doblon and Field Sergeant Almer

Ibanez. Their story ended happily

when the family members were found

safe.

A disaster response committee at

Territorial Headqaurters coordinates

all services in Leyte, Panay Islands

and Metro Manila.

Counseling and Distribution of

Food at Villamor Airbase

With thousands of survivors

coming to Metro Manila for refuge,

The Salvation Army along with other

government and non government

organizations provided cooked food

and counseling.

The same service is also given to

people in Tacloban and Cebu airports.

Volunteers from different parts of the

world partner with The Salvation Army

in distributing relief goods to survivors.
