The Messenger

August 2016

Christ Lutheran Church, Filey’s

Greetings,

The ELCA’s Social Statement on “Caring for Health—Our Shared Endeavor” states:

Each of us has responsibility to be a good steward of his or her own health out of thankfulness for the gift of life and in order to serve God and the neigh-bor. This means taking effective steps to promote health and prevent illness and disease (for example, eating well, getting adequate exercise and sleep, avoiding use of tobacco and abuse of drugs, limit-ing alcohol, and using car seat restraints). It means balancing re-sponsibility for health with other responsi-bilities. It also means seeking care as need-ed, recogniz-ing that disa-bility, disease, and illness do occur, even to those who are good stewards of their health.

As part of the ELCA’s initiative to get us in line with our social statement on “Caring for Health”, created a “Wholeness Wheel”. The “Wholeness Wheel” is designed to help us evaluate whether our life is in balance and being lived out according to our baptismal promises. There are six parts of the wheel: physical, spiritual, emotional, social, voca-tional, and intellectual. All together they represent the "wholeness wheel". Ganzkow-Wold, consultant for ministerial health and wellness, ELCA Division for Ministry, said: "Circles are used to symbolize wholeness."

At the center of the Wholeness Wheel is the core belief—and ultimate relief—that in baptism, we are a new creation in Christ. Balance is achieved when we realize who we are and whose we are.

Daily reminders of our new life in Christ come from staying “wet behind the ears.” Proper hydra-tion (at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day) is necessary to keep one’s physical system functioning properly.

The same holds true for our spiritual system. Our thirst is quenched (John 4:14) when we drink the living water that comes from Jesus. Spiritual well-being surrounds or undergirds the five aspects of our lives: social/interpersonal, emotional, physical, vocational, and intel-lectual. The categories are not delineated with hard lines because many of these parts overlap one another.

There are many risk factors in our lives. Some we have no control over, like our family history, genetics, some environmental factors, and our age. But there are factors we can control: smoking, use of alcohol or drugs, exer-cise or physical activity, eating dietary fats and sugars, weight, daily fruits and vegetables, stress, sleep, wear-ing seat belts, and regular visits to a health-care provid-er. These are the factors we focus on when we strive for balance and seek ways to glorify God.

I invite you to consider these factors in your life. A helpful tool for self-assessment can be journaling. Keeping the Wholeness Wheel in mind, along with the keys words balance and control. In your journal, list some ways our lives can get out of balance. For exam-ple: Not enough time for friends.

Next to each entry, write down a suggestion on a way to re-balance or ease the imbalance. For example: Reserve half-hour on Sunday afternoon for calling friends.

One of the factors I have begun to focus on is physical activity. This summer, I joined a gym and have been working out three to four days a week. Beth has been my accountability partner by meeting me there and mak-ing sure we stick to our schedule. What really ex-cites me is how many of you I’ve seen at the same gym. When I arrive back at my office, there are several more of you walking the parking lot and cemetery. Then there are those of you who are pur-posely watching your weight or eating healthier. It is great that so many of you are fo-cused on your physical well-being. (continued next page)

Through your journaling of the wellness wheel, if you discover that you’re lacking in physical activity and need to re-balance that portion of your life, now is the time. You could work in your garden or plant some flowers in a flower bed. This can serve both to increase your level of physical activity as well as your spiritual activi-ty if you say prayers while working. You too could join a gym or get an accounta-bility partner to walk with you. You could take a bike ride, or go for a swim. There are so many activities in the summer to focus on your physical well-being. The added plus is that by increasing your physical well-being, you can also affect your emotional well-being as well.

I hope you find this “Wellness Wheel” beneficial in guiding you to a more balanced life. If you are struggling with being out of balance, then talk to someone about it. Make plans to focus on that area. Get yourself a partner to help you. Then see where that takes you.

May God bless our summer endeavors, help us to restore balance in our lives, and keep us all healthy.

Peace, Pastor Debbie

President’s Message

Has a prayer been answered? In a recent sermon, Pastor Debbie encouraged us to think about prayer along with how prayers might or might not be answered. I got to thinking about my announcement a few weeks ago that informed you that coun-cil had passed a motion to donate a minimum of $100 to the Monaghan Fire Com-pany. And, that the motion included adding to whatever was received through the Special Envelopes during the month of July to make the $100 donation.

My suggestion/plea/prayer was for you to consider using your Special Envelope to help us meet our goal without having to add money to it. I also mentioned that any money we received over $100 would be included in our donation. Well, thanks to all who responded and used that envelope! We have one more Sunday in July, but it appears that we have already tripled our goal for our donation to the fire company. Has council’s prayer been answered? Thank you for your generous support!

Sincerely, Al Myers

“August is like the Sunday of summer,” an online meme proclaims. But that means different things to different people. If you see Sunday as the end of a week — a chance to sleep in, do “nothing,” relax and play — then August might be your downtime at the end of a busy summer. If Sunday feels heavy because the on-slaught of the workweek is approaching, then August may carry the dread of falling leaves and falling temperatures. But if you view Sunday as a fresh start to the week, then August, with a new school year and new church programming around the cor-ner, can be exciting. And if you honor Sunday as the Sabbath, indeed “August is like the Sunday of summer.” God invites us to enjoy these holy days and give thanks to him, the Creator of all seasons.

Where two or three are gathered in my name, God promises to be. How we can live into that story? Who will gather with us? What person or persons do we need to invite to a gathering? Where will we be gathering so that God can meet us? What unusual places can with think of to meet? Please share your story so that we, as a faith community, can live into our story! God, whose utter desire is to be in relationship with us, can and does meet us in places we never dreamed possible. Don’t forget to share with whom and where God showed up – your “God Sightings”. The rest of us would love to hear so that we can be better attuned to His presence with us.
