Southwest
Southwest had been settled by Spain in the 1500’s
Catholic missions; Mexico gained independence from Spain
Land is attractive to Americans Came at expense of Indians and Mexicans

Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana seized power and wants greater autonomy over Texas
