Vision, voice and practiceThe Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) is dedicated to improving and protecting the public’s health.

Being recognised as a leader for the public’s health is a privilege we take very seriously, and we are constantly seeking opportunities to make a positive difference through our vision, voice and practice.

Our vision is that everyone, regardless of their background, should have the opportunity to optimise their health and wellbeing. This is the foundation for all of our work, and determines our key areas of focus.

We are the independent voice for the public’s health, and use this to raise awareness of major public health issues and challenge health inequalities. We are very proud of our policy and campaigning work and have been delighted to have influenced recent victories both big and small, such as the introduction of the sugar levy in the UK and increased responsibility on mental health from social media companies.

We support and enable practice through a range of services including qualifications, National and Regional Programmes, training, accreditation and e-learning. We also recognise achievement through our award schemes to ensure that best practice is shared and learned from.

And we are the main home of anyone who wants to make a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of the public, with a growing and diverse membership, and a range of active Special Interest Groups and networks.

We hope that this activity overview provides you with a snapshot of our key areas of work and priorities. Join us and be part of it!

Protecting the public’s healthThe prevention and control of infectious diseases and other environmental threats is a vital part of maintaining the public’s health and wellbeing. Much of our work is based on ensuring that professionals have access to the right training, qualifications and resources so that they can play their part. We also develop policy on a range of health protection issues, from food safety to vaccinations.

Our qualifications, covering areas such as food safety and pest control, are vital in ensuring that professionals are trained to effectively manage risks to the public’s health.

Vaccination programmes also ensure health protection, and this is a growing area of interest for us, while our programme of webinars on water safety help to share best practice around the world.

Wider public health workforceWith over 15 million workers in the UK alone, including firemen, hairdressers and postal workers, the wider workforce can support the public’s health in a variety of ways.

By working with a range of different occupational groups, including the emergency services, pharmacies and Allied Health Professionals, we provide the means for professionals within the wider workforce to maximise their impact on the public’s health. We also provide a wide range of essential resources and tools to support the wider workforce in their interactions with patients and clients - all with the goal of improving the public’s health.

Working internationallyThe issues impacting upon the public’s health have relevance across the globe and our work is aimed at an international audience. We regularly participate in leading international events such as the American Public Health Association’s annual conference, while our membership spans the world, with representation from over 90 countries.

Digital platforms allow us to engage with public health professionals across the globe, enabling them to join our webinars and access our journals. Our campaigning and policy work regularly attracts attention from overseas with some of our research being replicated outside of the UK. We have also led and supported a number of international initiatives such as the European Young Health Champions.

Addressing the social determinants of health Where we are born, grow and develop, whether we work and the nature of it, and how we age, all have an important role to play in shaping our health. ‘Social determinants’ of health are critically important and behind many of the health inequalities we see. Our vision is for everyone to optimise their health and wellbeing regardless of their life circumstances and so much of our work is centred around addressing these health inequalities and the ‘causes of the causes’ of poor health and wellbeing. We work to make communities healthier through place based activities, influencing national and local policies, and through shining a spotlight on determinants of health such as the impact of high cost credit on health outcomes.

Health at every ageOur aim is to optimise health and wellbeing at every age and stage, from early years, through adolescence to working age, and in later life. We recognise child obesity as a key public health challenge facing young people and our Child’s Obesity Strategy has provided a platform for raising awareness of it. Our qualification for Young Health Champions provides young people with practical skills they can use to promote health and wellbeing to their peers at school, work and in the community.

Our Workplace Health Champions scheme encourages employers to be more health promoting and to support colleagues in leading healthier lives. We have also undertaken projects looking at later life, including the impact of attitudes towards ageing on our health and wellbeing.

Supporting harm reduction and promoting mental wellbeing We campaign on some of the biggest threats to healthier lifestyles, often from a harm reduction perspective. We support drug testing at festivals as a way of tackling deaths from drug overdose and discouraging drug use; we support e-cigarettes for smokers as a harm reduction tool to get people off tobacco; and we have pioneered a wide range of labelling initiatives to make the public aware of the calories in their food and alcohol. Much of our work on these issues is embedded within the training, qualifications and resources we provide to people who work to improve the public’s health, including Health Champions. We also promote positive mental wellbeing, including our Connect 5 programme which is aimed at improving confidence, self-esteem and resilience, and in our support for areas such as the arts and health and sleep as a public health issue.

Our strategic prioritiesWe are dedicated to improving the public’s health. In order to deliver on this mission, we have defined six strategic priorities that determine our key areas of focus so that we can maximise our impact.

Fellow (FRSPH)Fellowship is for senior public health professionals who want to demonstrate their position and, through working with us, help to shape the future of the public’s health.

Partners Working with partners, be they government departments and agencies or private companies, is essential for us to deliver on our strategic objectives. They bring expertise, credibility, access to vital stakeholders, and funding that enables us to maximise our reach and effectiveness.

This has resulted in the development of many successful initiatives including our report on ageing, That Age Old Question, supported by the Gulbenkian Foundation, and the Healthy Living Pharmacies register, supported by Public Health England.

flashpointsflashpoints was a photography competition we organised in partnership with the Royal Photographic Society.

Entries were invited from amateur and professional photographers with the aim of collating a selection of photographs which document and evoke the interaction between different stages of our lives and our health and wellbeing.

The winning entry was Sorrow by Natasa Balogh (pictured) which depicts the relationship between a mother and daughter.

Creative approaches to the public’s healthIn addition to our policy and campaign work, we explore the challenges facing the public’s health through a range of creative projects to help bring them to life in engaging ways.

Short story competitionHealth: From Here to Where? was a short story competition we ran in collaboration with the Health Foundation. We invited authors to imagine the future consequences for individuals and society if health inequalities persist, and to write about the social and commercial factors that contribute to these inequalities.

The winning entry, What You Want by Tim Byrne, has featured in a new PSHE Association learning resource helping teachers to raise secondary school students’ awareness of the social and environmental factors that shape our health and wellbeing.

Gin Lane 2016To celebrate our 160th anniversary year, we commissioned artist Thomas Moore to reimagine William Hogarth’s infamous 1751 cartoon Gin Lane (which depicts the debilitating effects of the gin crisis then sweeping London) for the 21st century. The new artwork (pictured) reflects some of the biggest public health challenges now facing British society, such as mental health and obesity.

Award winning campaignsWe published a report, Size Matters, with our corporate partner Slimming World exploring the impact of upselling on weight gain. Our research found that upselling – where people are persuaded to buy something additional or more expensive than they otherwise would have bought – is prevalent, with nearly 4 in 5 people experiencing this at least once in a week. The report estimated that upselling could lead to us consuming an additional 17,000 calories annually, equivalent to 5lbs of weight gain every year. The campaign secured extensive media coverage and won a 2018 PRCA DARE Award for, ‘Media Relations Campaign of the Year’.

Scroll Free SeptemberScroll Free September is our public health awareness campaign encouraging users to stop or cut down use of all personal social media accounts for the month. It follows the publication of our #StatusOfMind report in 2017, which found that although social media has a range of both positive and negative effects on the mental health and wellbeing of young people, the net effect of the majority of major platforms is currently negative, with impacts including heightened feelings of anxiety and depression, poor sleep, body image issues and fear of missing out (FOMO). The campaign aims to raise awareness, and for the participants to build a healthier relationship with social media.

Building careers We are a national awarding organisation that provides vocational health-related qualifications, and is recognised by Ofqual, Qualifications Wales, and the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA). Over 50,000 students achieve one of our qualifications every year through our extensive network of registered training centres. These cover a wide range of public health-related subjects including food safety, behaviour change, health and safety, nutrition and pest control.

Our key campaigns include:

Taking a New Line on DrugsWe assessed the increased harm to public health caused by illegal drugs in our report, Taking a New Line on Drugs. With reference to the wider ‘drugscape’ of legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco, the report sets out a new vision for a holistic public health-led approach to drugs policy at a UK-wide level.

#StatusOfMindOur report, #StatusOfMind, has become a global benchmark for the effect of social media on young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

It has stimulated both debate and action, with the launch of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Social Media and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing and the creation of Instagram’s new Wellbeing Team.

Campaigning for changeBy working closely with our members, the public health workforce and wider community, we develop and implement policies and campaigns to educate and empower individuals, and influence change. Our campaigns have attracted huge media and public interest, and involve bringing together a wide range of organisations to ultimately improve health and wellbeing for all.

Health on the High StreetOur Health on the High Street report explored how businesses on the high street impact the health of the public. The report includes a range of recommendations for making high streets healthier, including calling on local authorities to be given greater planning powers to prevent the proliferation of betting shops, payday lenders and fast food outlets.

We have now secured funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to repeat our original Health on the High Street research in the UK, and will be working with the University of California in Los Angeles to adapt the model for the United States.

Life on Debt RowIn our report Life on Debt Row, supported by the End High Cost Credit Alliance, we revealed the impact of high cost credit on mental wellbeing. We have called for action from the UK government and industry to protect the health and wellbeing of credit users, including ending targeted marketing of high interest loans to vulnerable individuals.

Healthy Living PharmaciesWe manage the national Healthy Living Pharmacy Level 1 register which holds over 9,000 Healthy Living Pharmacies in England, as well as quality-assuring the profession-led self-assessment process.

Developed by the Pharmacy and Public Health Forum and Public Health England, the scheme is aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of the local population through the consistent delivery of interventions through community pharmacies.

Young Health Champions The Young Health Champions (YHCs) initiative is a peer-driven approach to raising public health awareness among young people, providing them with the skills and knowledge to act as health mentors in their local communities.

YHCs are required to achieve our Level 2 Young Health Champion Award and we have developed a national network of over 2,000 YHCs across the UK.

Connect 5Connect 5 is an education programme that is designed to increase the confidence and core skills of front line staff so that they can have more effective conversations about mental health and wellbeing, help people to manage mental health problems, and increase their resilience and mental wellbeing through positive changes.

We have now trained over 200 Connect 5 trainers across England who are currently cascading training with their colleagues, service users and communities.

Alcohol Health ChampionsWe have supported the implementation of the Communities In Charge of Alcohol (CICA) scheme in Manchester which trains local volunteers to become accredited ‘Alcohol Health Champions’ and provide opportunistic advice and mobilise action on alcohol availability at a community level.

It is the first time that a devolved UK region has attempted to coordinate an approach to building health champion capacity, presenting an opportunity to grow its implementation and impact at scale.
