30 YEARS OF CHAMPIONING THE AUSTRALIAN METS SECTOR

There has never been a more exciting time to be part of the Australian Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) sector. With technology driving the future of our industry and sustainability a key platform for success, Australian METS are leading globally with the best solutions, strategies and technologies for the next generation and beyond.

Thirty years ago Austmine was formed, and we set out to ensure that the Australian METS sector was recognised far beyond our shores. Thirty years ago we recognised the uniqueness of what we had to offer and that by working together we could accomplish so much more. And, thirty years ago we wanted people to know not only about our contribution to mining, but to the Australian economy as a whole.

Today, the METS sector is one of the most technologically advanced,

innovative and internationalised sectors in Australia. Driven by a pioneering spirit and a commitment to excellence, METS companies can be found in every state, capital city, regional centre and remote location.

From well-known multinationals, to large Australian firms, SME family-owned businesses and high-tech start-ups, the METS sector reflects an advanced, modern economy. METS companies lead with best practice, provide critical operational support, ensure a safe working environment and interface daily with their customers. At a local level, they create jobs, foster important skills, kick-start civic activities and are the lifeblood and foundation of many regional communities.

Australian METS companies can be found in every corner of the globe, not just selling products and services but investing and employing thousands of

people. The sector is one of Australia’s only global benchmark industries where “Australian made” is a hallmark of success. This has been achieved because of Australia’s rich natural resources and the symbiotic relationship and dynamic interface that METS and miners have shared.

If you look at Austmine’s history, it is a mirror of the industry reflected in our members’ accomplishments. The development and application of novel solutions, new services, products and technologies, and step change innovations have changed the way we do things in mining; and all through the many miles travelled both above ground and underground.

Of course, our journey has not been alone, and never could it be. We have been pleased to partner with Federal and State Government agencies who have had the foresight to invest in

and recognise the vital importance of the METS sector. Austrade has been particularly instrumental in our journey and has provided us essential support over the years.

To all our mining customers with whom we have built relationships, partnerships and a strong industry. The close connection we share is a testament to the power of one – and this has made Australia the great mining nation that we are today.

To our other partners and sister associations with whom we have worked, often combining stretched resources and agile thinking to drive exceptional results. And, to the Austmine team – all staff and volunteer Board members who have worked tirelessly over the years to ensure METS stand head and shoulders above the rest, putting our members first and providing visionary leadership.

As we move into our next 30 years, it is apparent that our applications, knowledge and skills extend far beyond our mining customers. The expertise we have developed will shape the cities of tomorrow, power new energy sources and take us off-planet to the farthest reaches of space. We don’t just lead in in mining, but we are leaders in technology and a key driver of innovation globally.

Our success is your success and together we have accomplished so much more. We have built a strong community and solid foundations for the future, and there is no doubt that the best is yet to come.

Australian METS have a strong collective identity and a powerful voice, but this wasn’t always the case.

Before Austmine coined the term METS in 2009, there was little recognition of the size and scope of the Australian METS sector, and attention was solely focussed on the value of the commodity outputs rather than the high-tech inputs.

By creating a collective identity, purpose and vision for Australian METS, Austmine has established a platform to advocate for and communicate the diverse capabilities of the sector to the world.

Austmine has played a critical role in branding the METS sector in Australia. By actually identifying that the sector

exists, and defining its economic size, high value add, export performance and industrial complexity, Austmine has played a key role in educating government and the mining industry on the importance of the Australian METS sector both globally and regionally.”

Elizabeth Lewis-Gray, former Chair, Austmine and Managing Director, Gekko Systems

It’s clear to me that the Australian METS sector is recognised as leading the world. 40 of the top 100 METS

companies are headquartered in Australia. What Austmine has done for the sector is focus its voice, creating strength and unity in Australia and around the world.”

2003

The METS sector is one of a few industries where Australia can claim to be truly world-leading and is therefore critical to our nation’s prosperity. This was brought to light in Austmine’s 2013 METS survey, which helped the sector stand up and be recognised for its significant contribution to the Australian economy. A sector that generates $90 billion a year in revenue, employs more than 400,000 people and exports $15 billion in products and services to over 200 countries. This was a watershed moment for Austmine and the Australian METS sector, and made government, mining companies and the broader community understand the extraordinary global potential for METS.

I can claim to be part of a $90b industry segment. To put that in perspective, that is about 5% of

Australia’s GDP. It is a very powerful thing that I can claim to be a part of.”

George McCullough, Director of Strategy, Interlate

The breakthrough for Austmine came with the landmark survey in 2013. This is where the METS sector turned from

being a silent sector to gaining recognition as a key driver of the Australian economy.”

DRIVING INDUSTRY FORWARDThe fundamental purpose of Austmine is to support and drive the growth of the Australian METS sector. Working with government and key industry stakeholders, we have advocated for change and helped put in place important programs, services and support to power the sector forward. Austmine initiated a key turning point for METS in 2014, when our ongoing advocacy saw METS acknowledged by the Federal Government as one of six key growth sectors for the Australian economy. As a result, METS Ignited was formed to further strengthen the competitiveness of the Australian METS sector and provide a platform to accelerate growth.

Austmine also secured the delivery of the Federal Government’s Entrepreneurs’ Programme, with our team assisting hundreds of METS companies to realise their potential by setting them on a growth path and linking them with government funding and support.

The formation of METS Ignited was an important step forward for Australian METS. The Government recognised

the sector’s importance to the Australian economy and made a critical investment in our future. Austmine and METS Ignited are aligned in our goals and we are working together to accelerate great ideas, create world class companies and ensure a competitive and sustainable METS sector.”

Christine Gibbs Stewart, CEO, Austmine

The Entrepreneurs’ Programme for us was an entrée from the world we knew which was synchrotron science, into

the METS world. We’ve found that Austmine has helped us network within that environment and also to be aware of businesses and grant programs that can assist us.”

FOSTERING INDUSTRY COLLABORATIONFrom day one, Austmine sought to build collaboration across the value chain with the belief that by working together we can accomplish so much more. Austmine has been working hard to drive collaboration through building trust, developing relationships and opening up dialogue on a range of issues important to our industry’s future. Austmine’s ground-breaking Mining Collaboration Laboratories (Co-Labs) explored key industry challenges and set us on a path to more open dialogue.

Mining companies have come to the table to discuss their strategic and operational priorities at our events, Innovation Roadshows and Meet the Miners roundtable sessions, leveraging Austmine’s network to identify new innovations, boost their knowledge of the METS sector and brainstorm joint solutions. These collaborative initiatives have led to a number of successful industry projects.

The interaction with METS and mining companies has taken time but the results are beginning to emerge and are

very positive.”

SHOWCASING METS INNOVATIONThe Austmine Conference has become the world’s leading mining innovation conference.

Launched in 2005, long before innovation was a buzzword in the industry, our key message has been that we lead the world in mining technology and innovation, and Australian METS are the foundation of that success. It is now great to see that what we have been advocating for so long has finally come to the fore with the industry recognising innovation as a key strategic imperative.

Austmine’s biennial innovation and export awards celebrate the success of our members and recognise their contribution to making a step-change in our industry. The Australian METS sector is comprised of world-leading companies and exceptionally talented people, and we believe it is important to share and celebrate our many achievements.

As a Founding Partner of IMARC, we are also proud to have built what has become Australia’s largest mining industry conference and exhibition.

Austmine 2019 provided a great opportunity for us. We had the opportunity to interact with customers

and also talk to other METS companies, some of which we wouldn’t naturally partner with. It’s a great collaboration opportunity to meet new people and organisations.”

Richard Goodridge, Chief Scientist & Vice President - Research & Innovation, Orica

Over 30 years, Austmine has seen the power of creating a community. Our network provides an important platform to build critical relationships, foster partnerships and define a collective voice for the Australian METS sector.

Through offering ongoing opportunities to engage with industry colleagues, we have seen step change ideas generated, leading to technological breakthroughs for our industry, new ways of doing business and long-lasting collaborations.

This community has now developed to over 600 member companies and a 40,000 person strong global network, leading to members forming Tribes of passionate individuals who openly exchange ideas and learn from each other in order to make a difference to their business and the sector as a whole.

Austmine is proud to have built a community of enthusiastic, committed, hard-working and caring

people, working towards a better tomorrow, and representing the best of what Australia has to offer.

We value the opportunity to meet and hear from people working across the entire mining innovation

ecosystem and build relationships with like-minded companies.” Danielle Thompson-Hewitt, Technology Transfer Advisor, CSIRO

This is a sector where we are all focussed on servicing the mining industry and in the past much of that

was disjointed. Now I see us coming together much more as a community. Austmine has given us that sense of community, and it has also given us a voice.” Ann Burns, Managing Director Resources – ANZ, Accenture

SOCIAL VALUEThe benefits of mining can be immense, but the future of the industry is inextricably linked to the legacy we leave for future generations.

In a complex and interconnected world, communities and stakeholders extend far beyond a geographic location or project site. Businesses are thrust into the spotlight and increasingly assessed on economic development outcomes, climate footprint and social performance.

METS companies can shift the paradigm to ensure a more sustainable future by harnessing new technologies and innovative business practices to generate greater social value.

People understand the importance of our industry but are looking for change. The great challenge

is to develop mineral resources while minimising impact and increasing shared benefits. Innovation is at the heart of the METS sector. Understanding and applying sustainability principles is critical to the future of the METS sector, and the METS sector is a key part of future solutions.”

Christine Charles, Managing Director, D4G

COLLABORATION Emerging mining challenges cannot be tackled through existing products or point solutions, instead we must leverage the combined expertise of innovators across the mining ecosystem.

Through collaboration, METS companies can streamline the pathway to technology adoption and access value-adding knowledge and research. Ultimately, this delivers a greater value proposition and more holistic solutions to the market.

Collaboration across the mining industry will drive our economic prosperity long into the future, and METS companies must ensure they continue to build partnerships, have open conversations and adopt new business models to remain competitive.

Australia’s mining DNA was built on smart, practical people collaborating to make technologies

of all types work the best in harsh and remote operations. To retain and grow this recognised Australian advantage, there is no substitute for collaboration to develop, prove and market solutions to the sector’s productivity, social and environmental challenges.”

Ian Dover, General Manager, METS Ignited

Page 22: CHAMPIONING THE AUSTRALIAN METS SECTOR

INNOVATIONThe competitive advantage of Australian METS companies has long been the ability to innovate and develop smart solutions.

Working with mining customers, METS have implemented transformational technologies and practices into operations around the world, including artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, mining vehicle electrification, machine learning and augmented reality.

With the global mining industry increasingly disrupted by greater challenges, market instability and emerging technologies, Australian METS must continue to be at the leading edge.

Connected mining operations, with integrated data powered by the Internet of Things, are the future of

mining. The widespread adoption of powerful technologies will automate processes and enable transformation, allowing mining companies to create safer, more productive and sustainable operations.” Paul Higgins, Executive Chairman, Dingo Mining

Page 23: CHAMPIONING THE AUSTRALIAN METS SECTOR

GLOBAL REACHAustralian METS companies are a powerful force globally and our ecosystem is the envy of many, with governments around the world looking to Australia as a model to develop their own domestic industries.

We have developed world-leading capabilities and expertise in a diverse domestic mining market, and this has opened doors to deliver projects around the world in places as far and wide as the Andes Mountains, the Sahara Desert and the Arctic Circle.

With a substantial pipeline of projects coming online in developed and emerging markets, Australian METS should look abroad to grow their business and capitalise on the demand for Australian innovation.

With the mining industry continuing to grow globally, the METS sector will be critically important in supporting its

development through substantial technological capabilities. The Australian METS sector is recognised throughout the world for its strong record of delivery and service, along with its innovation capacity and proven solutions. This provides a solid foundation for future growth and positions us uniquely to meet new challenges of these markets."

AUSTMINE’S 2025 VISION

At Austmine we have been discussing what our future holds and developing our vision for 2025.

Looking into the future, we need to be bold. While we are leading now, others are following close behind and we need to secure our competitive positioning. This will take leadership, alignment across key stakeholders and the proliferation of our technology, knowledge and skills into other industries and new emerging fields.

We must ensure that Australia is the true global mining innovation hub, recognised as such by companies, governments and countries. We must leverage this position to lead the global mining innovation conversation to re-think how we do things, challenge the norm, solve key issues, attract investment in new areas and create exciting jobs and opportunities.

Austmine’s network will be better connected to create a strong global community, driven by technology and a sense of purpose. In this, we will expand our reach and represent the entire mining value chain and related energy technologies.

Page 25: CHAMPIONING THE AUSTRALIAN METS SECTOR
