Celebrating 40 Years!

On Sunday, September 21st, many of our friends,

family, staff and individuals we provide services to came out to Freedom park to celebrate New Hori-

zons Resources, Inc.’s 40th Anniversary! Great weather, lots of activities and a dunk tank made for

a wonderful afternoon as we celebrated everyone who has contributed to the success of our agency

over the years. We were also pleased to have hon-ored Bernie Kosby, on behalf of all the individuals

receiving services from NHR, Steve Bradley, on be-half of all the Direct Support Professionals and

Doris Shaw, on behalf of the original founders of our agency.

A special thank you to those who attended and sup-

ported our Anniversary!

Year End Review 2014 – 40 Years of Service

As 2014 comes to a close we reflect on our past and look forward to a flourishing and exciting New Year. In 2014, we have been celebrating our 40 years of service with the individuals we serve and the community. Our event in Septem-ber was the highlight of our celebrations, hon-oring those we serve, our magnificent staff and all our supporters (Families, Board members, Business associates). We want to thank every-one who contributed, donated, and participat-ed. “I am continuously grateful for the amazing breadth of NHR staff, donors and volunteers and their engagement in the communities in which they live. For example, recognizing em-ployees for tenure is an excellent way for organ-izations to show all their employees that they value the ongoing dedication and contributions of individuals. This seems especially prudent since current statistics show that the average employee changes jobs every 3 years and the average tenure of NHR employees is 10-12 years. Companies that tout high retention have been shown to have higher productivity, im-proved care, specialized training and staff with

integrity for their work. We must be doing something right! It is called the Unifying Prin-ciples. They are Integrity, Positive Relation-ships, Learning, Innovation and Respect for everyone in the organization.

Forty years is a long time and our success was and will remain a collaboration of hard work, strategic planning and caring about our mis-sion from deep within our hearts. The fortunes of our success are the result of many relation-ships. As you think about supporting this year’s Annual Appeal please think about all the fan-tastic work NHR staff do to make everyone’s life here as good as it can be every day, for eve-ry individual, every shift. We thank you for all your past support and continued caring for NHR.

total up those baby steps you'd be amazed over the course of 10, 20, 30, or 40 years, the strides you've taken”. New Horizons has accomplished great success over the years because we do care every step of the way each day.

Managed Care, The Affordable Care Act, the NYS Waiver will all bring new challenges but if we take these challenges one step at a time we will continue to accomplish great things for the peo-ple we support. I love what we do and I think what we do, matters. Our goals for 2015 will in-clude a new residential home, increased data col-lection methods, OPWDD transformation objec-tives, continued close budget evaluation and in-creased individualized services, and continued relationship building with sister agencies and our partners at large. We will also be following the Managed Care initiatives and opportunities closely.

We have grown over these 40 years as the result of the amazing work of many people. Here are a few highlights: From a dream to 30 residential homes for more than 170 people, we have added valuable other programs that include Respite services, summer camps, Medicaid Service Coor-dination, At Home Residential Services, Day Ha-bilitation, and Direct Support Professional Certi-fications. The agency is now accredited by The Council on Quality and Leadership and in excel-lent standing with our oversight agency (OPWDD). We currently have an operating budget of more than 20 million dollars, serve over 400 people and have about 400 fulltime, part-time and relief staff.

Specifically in 2014 we continued on this organi-zational growth. As we planned to open a new home for five people aging out of residential school programs, we have met all OPWDD’s new mandates of data collection and billing, we have a balanced budget, and increased our IT capabil-ities.

You Will Be Missed….

Hannah was born in Woodridge,

NY and spent much of her adult life

there. In the early '70s, Hannah

became a resident of the New Hori-

zons community, an organization

whose founders wanted to create

services that would provide homes

and the reasonable assurances of

lifetime care for its residents. The

founders wanted to give people

with disabilities opportunities to build friendships

and establish relationships in their communities.

Hannah spent many years in the loving community of

Mountain View in Naponoch. Recently wheelchair

bound, Hannah moved to Unionvale, a supportive,

caring community within the New Horizons net-

work that was more suited to her physical needs.

Hannah made strong friendships with both the other resi-

dents and the many wonderful caregivers at New Horizons.

Her family is in awe of the amazing care given to Hannah

up to and including on the day she died at the age of 89.

Hannah was a gentle soul who loved animals, especially

her cat, Midnight. She enjoyed doing needlework and

working in the Ellenville Workshop. Most of all, Hannah

enjoyed being in the company of people, any and all.

Obijiski Scholarship!

In order to eternally perpetuate the legacy

of Regis’ Objiski’s commitment to the development and

recognition of direct support as a true profession NHR has

established this scholarship. NHR will offer a $750.00 scholarship.

The applicant must be a current NHR

employee, DSP or FLS, in good standing with a minimum of 1 year of continuous employment

in a part time or full time capacity with NHR. The applicant must be enrolled in an ac-credited (the learning institution must have a

physical location) college or university and majoring in Human Service or closely related

field.

Spotlight On… Israel Goldman was a nice man, an active listener, and a gentle soul. He always remembered to ask about your family, took time to spend time with you, never rushed you through a conversation, and enjoyed his life. He enjoyed the simple things; the love of his fam-ily, friends, and community. His smile and attitude was contagious. In his memory, I would like to nomi-nate Joe Parker for the Goldman Award. Izzy would be proud that Joe carries on the tradition of family, service, and faith in an honorable and quiet way. Joe is an integral part of the Briggs Farm family. He greets every person with a smile and “How you doin?” The moment that Joe walks in the door, he is all about the people that we support. He may have a thousand things going on from helping his family with their horse farm or being a single dad or being a new grandfather; but you would never know it. He is truly present in the moment and all about the folks when he gets to work. The hugs, laughter, and conversations start when Joe walks in the door. He never rushes you; he takes time for you, and is an active listener. He is often running late, because you are more important than the rest of his day.

Joe will also help with any challenge and does not take anything personally. A person can be having a bad day, and Joe is helping. He is talking, walking, and helping. A person may be sick and in the bath-room, and Joe is right there. Joe is rubbing the individual’s back or holding a hand. Briggs farm is also a family. We lost fellow staff - Tom Murphy to an unexpected sudden death in Jan-uary of 2014. Joe was right there. He extended himself to Tom’s family and the Briggs farm family. Joe made sure he spent time with Tom’s daughter and was part of planning Tom’s memorial service at the farm. He still feels Tom, and feels that Tom guides him in everyday life. Joe also loves all the animals at the farm. He will spend hours teaching and role modeling how to take care of the farm animals to fellow staff and the participants. No job is too big or small from rubbing ointment on a sick horse to mucking stalls to helping animals cross over the rainbow’s bridge with dig-nity. Joe serves as a role model to the next generation at New Horizons as well. Owen Passente started as an intern at Briggs, and is now a DSP, in large part to watching and learning from Joe. Joe has been part of many students’ lives from Dutchess Community College, Marist College, Ulster Community College, and Vassar College. Joe was recently honored by SUNY Stony Brook for his commitment as a DSP. Joe Parker is a good guy, a family man with a heart of gold and has a true calling to work with people

with developmental disabilities. I have been honored to work with Joe, to learn from Joe, and have
