Welcome to a new season of sacred music at The Cathedral of Saint Joseph. Music has always played an important role in the life of this Cathedral parish. Included in this booklet is a listing of music to be sung by assembly, cantors and the Cathedral Choir, highlighting each Sunday, feast or liturgical season.

LENT The annual Lenten season is the fitting time to climb the holy mountain of Easter. The Lenten season has a double character, namely to prepare both catechumens and faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. The catechumens, both with the rite of elections and scrutinizes, and by catechesis, are prepared for the celebration of the sacraments of Christian initiation; the faithful, ever more attentive to the Word of God and prayer, prepare themselves by penance, for the renewal of their baptismal promises (Caremoniale episcoporum, 249). Note: During the seasons of Lent and Easter, “Verbum domini” is chanted following the first and second readings.

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER TRIDUUM Christ redeemed us all and gave perfect glory to God principally through his paschal mystery: dying he destroyed our death and rising he restored our life. Therefore, the Easter triduum of the passion and resurrection of Christ is the culmination of the entire liturgical year. Thus the solemnity of Easter has the same kind of preeminence in the liturgical year that Sunday has in the week. The Easter triduum begins with the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, reaches its high point in the Easter vigil, and closes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday (General Norms, 18-19). Tuesday 27 March 2018: Tuesday of Holy Week / Chrism Mass All Christians are anointed because all are filled with the Spirit’s gifts for the building up of the

church and the church’s service to the world. In every local church one Christian presides in love and orchestrates the church’s ministry. This is the bishop, or chief pastor. It is not surprising, therefore, that the most ancient liturgical witnesses designate the bishop as the consecrator of the sacramental oils. Although priests once blessed the oils of the catechumens and the sick and may do so in some circumstances, only the bishop may consecrate the chrism with which the baptized are sealed at confirmation and ordination. This rite is one of the last rites of preparation before the Triduum begins. Before the local church baptizes, it prepares the chrism which will be used in the Vigil.

This celebration has always retained a special character of collegiality. Even in the centuries when Eucharistic concelebration had disappeared from the church’s life, the ritual for the blessing and consecration of oils retained strong elements which reminded all that ministry in the church is never the work of an individual but part of a community of ministers of different gifts and responsibilities. The present celebration of the rite has been restored as full concelebration of the bishop with his clergy and with the full participation of the laity. Saturday 31 March 2018: Holy Saturday / The Great Vigil of Easter 8:00 a.m. Morning Prayer – Consult separate worship aid On Holy Saturday the Church waits at the Lord’s tomb in prayer and fasting, meditation on his Passion and Death and on his Descent into Hell, and awaiting his Resurrection. The Church abstains from the Sacrifice of the Mass, with the sacred table left bare, until after the solemn Vigil, that is, the anticipation by night of the Resurrection, when the time comes for paschal joys, the abundance of which overflows to occupy fifty days. Holy Communion may only be given on this day as Viaticum. The Great Vigil of Easter, 8:00 p.m. By most ancient tradition, this is the night of keeping vigil for the Lord (Ex 12:42), in which, following the Gospel admonition (Lk 12:35-37), the faithful, carrying lighted lamps in their hands, should be like those looking for the Lord when he returns, so that at his coming he may find them awake and have them sit at his table. Of this night’s Vigil, which is the greatest and most noble of all solemnities, there is to be only celebration in each church. PART II: LITURGY OF THE WORD There are seven readings from the Old Testament and two from the New (the Epistle and Gospel), all of which should be read whenever this can be done, so that the character of the Vigil, which demands an extended period of time, may be preserved. Nevertheless, where more serious pastoral circumstances demand it, the number of readings from the Old Testament may be reduced, always bearing in mind that the reading of the Word of God is a fundamental part of this Easter Vigil. At least three readings should be read from the Old Testament, both from the Law and from the Prophets, and their respective Responsorial Psalms should be sung. Never, moreover, should the reading of chapter 14 of Exodus with its canticle be omitted. Following each reading from the Old Testament the Responsorial Psalm is sung. EASTER SEASON During the Easter Season, the Church extends the joy and gladness of Easter day throughout several weeks. The Solemnity of Easter itself, and I particular the Great Easter Vigil, is the highpoint of the liturgical year. Since the celebration of the Easter feast is of such pre-eminence, the Church extends that celebration for seven days, called Easter Week. Each day of Easter Week is a solemnity of high rank, and rituals peculiar to Easter (like the double “Alleluia” sung at the dismissal) are continued each day during Easter Week. The importance of the “Week of Easters” is such that the Church multiplies it seven times seven, creating a season of joy and festivity. Thus, the Easter Season is highly symbolic in length, a season of 7 times 7 days, culminating in the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (pente meaning “fiftieth”).
