CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. PEORIA, ILLINOIS, U. S. A.
Track-type Tractors-Combines-Road Machinery THERE IS A "CATERPILLAR" DEALER NEAR YOU
FORM 2209
Foreword
The "Caterpillar" Tractor is the product of advanced engineering combined with skilled manufacturing and the finest I1Iaterials metallurgical science can select. Thousands of satisfying, econol1lical working hours are built into each Inachine.
Whether or not the owner derives the 111axil1ltltn of service frOI1I his tractor depends largely on the care exercised in its operation and Inaintenance. This book is written for the purpose of giving the operator essential information regarding the day to day operation, lubrication and adjustment of the "Caterpillar'·' Diesel Fifty Tractor. A careful adherence to these instructions will insure econOlnical operation.
Many "Caterpillar" owners employ the Dealer's Service DepartnIent for any work other than routine care and adjustments. This practice is recommended as Dealers are kept closely infornled by the factory regarding advanced methods of servicing "Caterpillar" products and are equipped to render satisfactory service.

LUBRICATION CHART
7
Lubrication The following tables recommend the viscosity or body of oils to be
used where the lubrication" chart specifies -crankcase lubricating oilor -transmission lubricant-.
CRANKCASE LUBRICATING OiL Atmospheric Temperatures S.A.E. Number Above 320F. (COC.) 40 or 50 Below 32oF. (COc.) 20 or 30
For continous max1mum.loads when temperature is above 320F. (OoC.) use S.A.E. 50 crankcase lubricating 011.
For the same load conditions, but when temperature is near or below 32oF. (OoC.) use the heaviest oil which will permit satisfactory starting and inunediate oil circulation. To tacilitate starting in cold weather the engine should be kept warm when not in operation, or i~ should be warmed before starting. Heating the liquid in the cooling system and also removing and heating the crankcase lubricating oil will likewise facilitate starting and insure immediate oil distribution. It possible the machine should be stored. in a warm building, otherwise it should be covered with a tarpaulin under which a heater is kept burning to keep the temperature at a reasonably high pOint. When starting during cold weather the engine should be allowed to operate at a moderate speed (approximately ~ of rated r.p.m.) for at least fitteen minutes to insure adequate lubrication.
A major factor in determining the suitability ot oils for use in cold weather is their ability to flow treely at low temperatures. For any atmospheric temperature below treezIng, use a crankcase lubricating 011 that has a low pour point. The pour point tor any oil can be given by the Company that markets it.
TRANSMISSION LUBRICANT
Atmospheric Temperatures S.A.E. Number
Above WF. (OOC.) 160
Below 320F. (OOc. ) no or 90
At all temperatures a transmission lubricant should be used that will tlow freely and will not channel. ~ extremely cold weather, one ot lower viscosity than S.A.E. 90 may be needed. It this cannot be obtained, thin the lubricant by mixing in aaus.d crankcase lubricating 011 which has a low S.A.E. number and also a 10" pour pOint.
The draining" of any compartment in preparation for retilling with fresh oil should be done when the oil is warm, as after a day's run. Any foreign substances will be in suspension and will drain out with the old oil.
DO NOT LUBRICATE TRACK
Under no circumstances should lubricant be used. on the tracks. The initial stiffness between the links is not caused by lack of clearance between the track pins and bushings. This stIffness will disappear during normal operatIon ot the tractor.

Use same 011 as used In crankcase ot startlng englne. Wash tllter section every 300 hours ot tractor operation. See toplc, CARE OF AIR CLEANERS.
Fill through the timing gear case oil plug to the level ot the test cock in the crankcase. Check oil level every 10 hours ot tractor operation. Drain wh11e hot and retill trom every 120 hours to every 300 hours ot tractor operation, depending on the amount ot dust in the air and the length ot time the starting engine has been run. In SUIIlIller use S .A.E. 30 crankcase lubricating oil and in winter use S.A.E. 20. Wash the breather when changing 011.
Keep oil level to "FUll" mark on 011 level gauge. Check every 10 hours. Drain wh11e hot and ret ill every 30 hours when working under dusty conditions; otherwise every 60 hours. See topic, WASHrnG CRANKCASE. Wh11e crankcase is draining, wash crankcase oil tilter. See topic, WASHrnG CRANKCASE OIL FILTER. Atter crankcase is tilled start engine and run it tor about two minutes to allow oil to be pumped into tilter. Then stop engine, check 011 level, and it necessary retill to "FUll" mark on gauge.
Fill oil cup every 10 hours.
Fill until oil level is even with top of tiller elbow. Drain, wash, and refill with tresh oil every 900 hours. See topiC, WASHING STARTER PINION SHAFT HOUSING.
Fill oil cup every 10 hours.
At intervals varying trom every 5 hours to every 60 hours, depending on the amount ot dust in the air, wash cup and retl1l to circular mark. Use same 011 as used in crankcase ot starting engine. Wash filter section every 300 hours. See topiC, CARE OF AIR CLEANERS.
