This year it has been a surprise to see that the top growth bull who indexed No 1 in both weaning and yearlingweight Lot 36 is sired by a SimAngus bull we raised – GCCR Cookie Bull. The dam of Lot 36 is a SimAngusalso raised here. We think this a testament to the quality of the cow herd behind these bulls. From the timewe started to develop this registered Simmental and SimAngus herd we have embraced the tools of superiorgenetics and the use of “THE” the Simmental cow productivity program in order to move forward.

As usual, there are different types and styles of bulls so as to fit what your program needs. All of the nulls will bestouter and more rugged than what you commonly see. These bulls do not have to be 2 years old to breed cows.We use our own yearling bulls on cows as do our customers and have no problems. These bulls will not fall apartor melt and can travel big or rough pastures. This is our experience and what our customers are telling us. Thesale bulls will weigh 1,200# to 1,400# on sale day with several in the 1,500# range.

No matter what the price of cattle or corn, Randy and I feel very blessed. We have the most precious grandchil-dren and great kids. Thank you Adam and Summer, Eric and Tori for all your help. GCCR Bull DevelopmentBulls received no creep prior to weaning. After weaning they were developedon a Purina program for gain and longevity- not high fat/gain ration. Theywere developed in a large lot.

Heifer DevelopmentHeifers received no creep prior to weaning. After weaning they were on aPurina development program and then moved to a cube and hay ration.They have been in a small pasture. The Sale Heifers will be brought toour hose and penned before the sale.

Wintering/DeliveryGCCR will board any bulls not taken at the sale free until April 30th. Wewill work out a schedule for delivery beginning in April. Please let theclerks at the Sale know the day of the Sale If you are taking the bulls or ifyou want us to deliver, It works best if you can take the heifers Sale dayor soon after, We bring the bulls and heifers home immediately after theSale so that we are taking care of them. The bulls are moved to a largelot and fed a ration to harden them for breeding but keep them in goodcondition.

Registration:All animals are raised from registered Simmental and Angus unlessotherwise noted. All bulls and females have been BVD-PI tested.

Final Data:Ultrasound will be done in February and will be posted on our websiteand available Sale Day. Actual weights will be taken shortly before thesale and a breeding soundness exam and fertility test will be done by Dr.Lex Thompson. Genetic testing and color testing will be done in Februaryso that it will be ready by the 1st of March.

MULTI-BREED CALVING EASEThe multi-breed calving ease EPDs are here! You will now see a number for calving ease (CE) and maternal calvingease (MCE) for the SimAngus animals. Please notice that the base changed for the MCE. Which just means that the average is different than before, so make sure to take note of the new average. Here are the current EPD averages for the Purebreds and the SimAngus:

The American Simmental Association and the American Red Angus Association have become partners for the purposeof EPD calculation. In order to make it easier for the customers, they have agreed to work on the same base, so thissummer, watch for the EPDs to be on a new base.

The only thing you have to think about is to remember to look at the EPD averages to be able to compare the EPDs of each animal to the new average. It will not change the spread between any bulls or the meaning of each EPD. The base number will just be different for each trait. It will actually make it easier to compare animals across breeds.

at any stage if they are nervous or difficult to work with. The cattle are accustomed to people, 4 wheelers and horses. Studies continue to show that quiet cattle gain better and are more feed efficient. Besides the positive economic

GENETICSWe have little control over our weather andmarkets buts we can control the genetics weuse. Both the Simmental and Angus breedshave developed and implemented new technol-ogy which enables breeders to make signifi-cant strides in measuring and evaluatingseedstock and thus making great progress. Itwould be much cheaper and easier to not reg-ister out cattle and not implement all the newtechnology. For those of us who go to the time,expense and work of registering these animalswith the respective associations we are able tobe on the cutting edge of progress and believethis investment will pay off for our customers.You will get a registration paper that tells youwho you are getting, performance records, andcomparisons on a national basis with othercattle. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparisonof genetic levels for many economically impor-tant traits, they only provide a piece of the eco-nomic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes comein. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathe-matical computation, $ indexes blend EPDsand economics to estimate an animal’s overallimpact on your bottom line. The same technol-ogy that led to the dramatic progress in swine,poultry and dairy genetics over the last sev-eral decades was used to develop the following$ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for useon the entire cow herd (bred to both Angusfirst-calf heifers and mature cows) with theportion of their daughters required to main-tain herd size retained and the remainingheifers and steers put on feed and sold gradeand yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on ma-ture Angus cows with all offspring put on feedand sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index touse; if you’re keeping replacements use API, ifnot, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in onthe unit difference between bulls. (As de-scribed above, index units are in dollars percow exposed.) The difference can be used todetermine how much a bull is worth comparedto another. Or, put another way, how muchyou can pay for one bull compared to another.For example, when buying an all-purpose-typesire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A per-centile-ranking chart is required to determinewhere a bull’s index value ranks him relativeto other bulls in the breed.
