Grow a Monarch safe havenMonarch butterflies are famous for their annual mass-migration, but they need safe havens to live in during the summer months too. Creating a Monarch waystation in your back yard is simple to do using native plants. See page 26 for our new Monarch Waystation program.

Use a gas grillGrilling with propane is a much cleaner and greener way to cook than using charcoal.Briquettes give off far more Volotile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which are pollutants.

Scent out skeetersFor toxic-free methods of keeping mosquitos at bay, try using citronella candles and citronella based repellents. Planting rosemary and using garlic based repellents can also be effective.

Volunteering at the Park District isn’t a job, nor a chore, it’s an experience! We have lots of fun

and the kids are amazing. You can meet new people and they are always friendly and welcoming. Even after graduation, I plan to continue volunteering here in Carol Stream. I would like to encourage other high school students to come and help out at the Park District, your help is always needed and appreciated!

- Haley Cusimano

Haley, a Senior at Glenbard West High School, recently moved to Carol Stream from Chicago, where she completed 62 hours volunteering for the Chicago Park District as a junior camp counselor. Haley began volunteering with the Carol Stream Park District in January 2010.

In the last few months, she has assisted our staff with special events including: Winter in the Park, Daddy Daughter Dance, Mother-Daughter Doll Tea Party, kids egg hunt, Annie Jr., theatre production, the Preschool Fun Fair and the Bunny Bash. We appreciate her enthusiastic spirit and her willingness to pitch in with whatever the task is that needs to be accomplished. She has quickly become a familiar face around the park district.

Dog Park, Park Upgrade Referendum Projects in ProgressIn February 2010 Carol Stream park District residents voted yes in a referendum for improved trails, a new dog park, a new recreation center and long term maintainence projects, and less than three months since the referendum passed, plans are already in progress.

The site of the new dog park has been secured with the approval of a permit for use of land owned by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The land, which will be accessable through volunteer Park on Kuhn Road, will add a park without requiring a land purchase. The permit was at no charge to the park district.

Two contracts for park design master plans have also been approved by the park district board. The design plans are the first step to upgrading McCaslin Park, and the Jirsa, Stonebridge and Sundance playgrounds. The playgrounds, which are three of the oldest playgrounds in the district, will be developed with the input of local residents.

Negotiations are currently in progress for architecture/project management services for the planned recreation center, and the park district is continuing to work with the Village of Carol Stream on securing a site for the center.

Their presence and their unique needs have brought about a partnership between the Purple Martin Society and the Carol Stream Park District.
