Greetings  and  Salutations!  As  summer  winds  down  and fall approaches, like the seasons, many new and wonderful things are happening at CARD. There is a new captain at the helm, Jerry Haynes, CARD General Manager, replacing Steve Visconti, who retired last July. Steve built a solid foundation and provided a course of action for growth and opportunity. Mr. Haynes will build upon the foundation, navigating CARD to the next level of community involvement, partnerships, and positive impacts. We realize to be a meaningful organization, we  need  to  have  community  support,  involvement,  and action. CARD is expanding its community involvement and opportunities to positively impact CARD participants and the Chico Community. New things are coming that will help to enrich all our lives!

FREE Healthy Aging Summitand Senior Expo 2014CARD, Enloe Home Health, Interim Health Care, Rite Aid and Passages are presenting this  free  event  offering  a  great  opportunity  to  see  the  latest  products  and  services, view  demonstrations,  participate  in  health  screenings  and  gather  information targeted for those age 50 and over. Educate you, family members and friends about the importance of prevention and maintaining good health for independence in your later years. Please contact the Lakeside Pavilion Office for a detailed flyer of events.  Phone: 895-4015.

Letter To SantaDuring December, boys and girls under 8 years old can receive a letter via CARD from jolly old Santa and his elves. Children should mail their letter to the CARD office, 545 Vallombrosa  Avenue,  Chico,  CA  95926,  no  later  than December  5.  A  self-addressed, stamped envelope must be enclosed. The return envelope will be postmarked from the North Pole. Unfortunately, due to the amount of letters received, any letters collected after December 5 will not receive a response.

Pastels on the PlazaCome and “Chalk it up” in downtown Chico. This great family event gives both the novice and professional artist an opportunity to express themselves. Novice squares can be purchased by anyone who wants  to participate. These 4’  x  4’  squares are perfect  for  a  family,  group  or  individual.    Professional  artists  are  encouraged  to apply for a sponsored square on “Fine Art Alley”. These 8’ x 8’ squares are sponsored by local businesses. Applications for “Fine Art Alley” are available online at www.chicorec.com or at the CARD Office. All chalk is provided.  Any outside chalk must state it is “Lead Free” if it is to be used in artwork.

2014 National Yo-Yo ContestThe  2014  National  Yo-Yo  Contest  will  be  held  in  Chico.  Contest  includes  five championship  divisions,  including  a  sport  division  for  intermediate  and  advanced players, a National A and National AA levels for the best players in the country. The excitement  builds  throughout  the  day,  leading  up  to  the  finals  for  the  National Championship in the afternoon. This is a fun, free event for everyone in the family and all are invited to participate. You will be astonished at what these kids can do! For more information, contact Bob Malowney at 893-0545 ext. 24.  Nationalyoyo.org. Breakfast With SantaWelcome to Santa’s village!  Choose what time you would like to have breakfast and then use the rest of the time to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and make crafts with the  elves.  Roots  Catering  will  be  serving  pancakes  and  other  wonderful  breakfast treats.   Choose from the available breakfast times, but come anytime to participate in the rest of the activities.   This event will run from 8 am –12 pm. Every person attending must be registered. FREE An Emotional Tune-Up Seminar 2015 “Self Compassion, A Tool for Emotional Healthiness”Join us for an afternoon of breakout workshops devoted to emotional well-being and enhancing your overall  life’s outlook. The afternoon will  include relaxation  topics, discussions  outlining  emotional  healing  and  demonstrations  by  professionals  and laymen sharing experiences and information to benefit attendees regardless of their current emotional state of mind. Toddler Pre-K Programs .Frequently Asked QuestionsHow do I register for a Toddler Pre-K Program?  Simply choose  the class  that is  appropriate  for  the  age  of  your  child.  If  there  is  room  in  the  class,  you will  be able to register immediately at the CARD Office at 545 Vallombrosa Ave. (no online registration is available). If the class is full, you will be placed on a waiting list and contacted when an opening becomes available.

How long is the session? This is an ongoing class. Once you are registered, you will remain registered until you notify us  that your child will no  longer attend. Should you choose not to continue, simply notify the CARD office so we can contact the next person on the waitlist.

How do payments work? The fee for the class is due by the 1st of each month. *If payment is received after the 1st of the month, the fee increases by $10.

Our Time Together: Parent/Child Program:for 18-35 Months OldFall 2014 Begins Wednesday, 9/3 Our Time Together can be an exciting and fun opportunity for your child to improve current skills, learn new skills, make friends, and have fun. This is also an opportunity for us to create a parenting community and share development milestones. During the  toddler  years,  your  child  will  make  huge  strides  physically,  intellectually,  and emotionally, whether it’s learning to use the potty or stacking blocks.

Something  to  observe  in  this  program  is  how  your  child  plays  adjacent  to  other children  in  the  playgroup.  This  cooperative  social  interaction  is  called  parallel play  and  helps  children  begin  language  development,  build  confidence,  and  form relationships. Your child will increasingly learn to share and become aware of other’s emotions, as well as learn cause and effect through trial and error of adjusting and solving problems in play. Not only are our classes a wonderful bonding opportunity for you and your child, they are an excellent way to meet new friends, introduce your child  to other children, and find others  that will  support  you  through  the exciting adventure of parenthood.

What is the structure of the class? Each day  the  classroom will  be  set up with developmentally  age  appropriate  toys  and  activities  that  parents  can  do with  their child. The teachers will be there to assist parents and children in participation. 

How many teachers are there for the class? We have one teacher for each program. The teacher is hand selected for their experience working with young children. All staff are fingerprinted.

Do I need to stay with my child during class? Yes. This class  is  formatted as a parent/child class with the goal of giving parents an opportunity to bond, meet other parents that have children the same age as theirs and provide parent support.

Tiny Tots: 3-4 Year OldsFall 2014 Begins Tues. 9/2 A great first classroom experience for your child! This program is designed to model and teach your child age appropriate skills so they will confidently transition into a Pre-K program or Kindergarten.   We have designed  the program to make  learning participation fun and engaging! We strive to provide a positive, safe, and nurturing learning environment that addresses each student’s individual needs.  We know that each child has a different  learning style and we will  incorporate many styles while engaging all students in a fun and supportive manner.

Each day is full of fun and age appropriate activities for your child. While participating in  games,  music,  crafts,  stories  and  play,  your  child  will  benefit  from  this  social environment. Our teacher encourages working with others, sharing and taking turns. Our  dedicated  preschool  room  and  playground make  this  a  perfect  place  for  your child’s first preschool  experience.   Children must be potty  trained before attending class.

Chico Center for Learning Pre KLooking for a Pre Kindergarten program? CARD is partnering with the Chico Center for Learning (CCL) to offer a pre K program for children 4  to 5 years old who will be entering kindergarten next school year. With an emphasis on reading and math preparation, as well as music, movement, art and  science,  the CCL offers a quality program that will help prepare your child for kindergarten.  Class size is limited to 10 children. This program operates September-May with monthly fees of $300. If you are interested in this program, please contact CCL directly at 343-2980.

Thrive: K-12Learning CenterFall 2014 through Spring 2015Our mission  at  Thrive  is  to  inspire  a life-long love of learning by respecting each  person’s  individual  interests, strengths,  and  capabilities.  It  is  a place where children are free to learn, inspire,  imagine,  create,  play,  and shine!

All sessions will live up to that mission by  being  a  free  and  open  structured  environment  where  children  are  liberated  to choose their level of participation. Session advisors work with the children to create an emergent and free flowing curriculum that derives from the imaginations of the children enrolled.

Learning invitations are presented in an environment that fosters imagination, self- motivation, and meaningful experiences. Books, websites, magazines, nature, music, math  concepts,  science projects,  art  projects,  building materials,  creative play,  and idea sharing will spark the imagination.

We strongly encourage families to stay with the same time schedule throughout the year if at all possible. This encourages continuity within the group and fosters strong bonds. Some participants come for all the sessions and others choose to sign up for one or two. Advisors: Cyndi Pereira and Jennifer Anderson.

CARD is a vendor  for South Sutter and CORE. To register with a PO from your ES, please go into the CARD office at 545 Vallombrosa Avenue in Chico prior to the start of your session.  There is a $20 supply fee for each session, payable to an advisor on the first day. This cannot be included in the PO. Each session is limited to 16 participants. 

• ALL Thrive programs are held at the PV Recreation Center, 2320 North Ave.

• Natural Science Labs and Minecraft days are held at other locations. Please see descriptions for details.

Club Thrive (Ages 11-18) Older Thrivers get a chance to spend some time together and do cool activities. Club Thrive is on most second and forth Fridays of each month. Second Fridays have a set theme and forth Friday themes will derive from the participants. Watch our Facebook page for more details. Hands-on experiences, games, activities, fun and learning for all. We hope to see you soon! $5 supply fee for each club day payable to an advisor on the first day. Limited to 20 participants.

Playshops at THRIVE (Ages 5-13)Looking for activities for your homeschooler to participate in? Come play and learn at THRIVE. These special one day workshops are perfect if you want to try THRIVE out or if you only want to make a one day commitment. Playshops are usually the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Each playshop has a different theme and will be a hands-on experience for all that participate. We hope to see you there! There is a $5 supply fee for each playshop payable to an advisor on the first day. Limited to 16 participants.

Thrive Natural Science Field Trips (Ages 5-13)Meet us at the Chico Creek Nature Center (every second Thursday of the month) for a naturalist-led, hands on, science investigation lab. There will also, be time for hiking, playing, games, art, and fort building in the park. Field Trips are rain or shine and are generally the second Tuesdays of each month. We have indoor space to play if needed.  Parents must pick up and drop off at specified location. No supply fee.

HomeschoolNEW Rolling into Reading

Rolling  into  Reading  classes  are  designed  to  help  children  experience movement and exercise in a fun and positive environment.  Our program will introduce students to activities that stimulate the mind and body as a whole.  Combining movement with sensory processing skills may help children with ADHD,  dyslexia,  sensory  processing  disorders  and  developmental  delays.  Children participate in fun activities that support the foundation for learning, focusing skills,  interacting with peers and following directions.   Instructor: Marcia Carter.  CARD Community Center.

Kids on CampusAfter School ProgramLooking for a safe, fun and enriching place to send your children after school?  If so, CARD’s Kids On Campus After School Program is the place for you!  This is not your typical “hang out in the cafeteria program.”  In addition to time for homework, arts, crafts, games, free play and a healthy snack, participants are introduced to a variety of enrichment opportunities.  This program follows the school calendar. Participants are signed in and out every day.  The ratio of staff to children is 1:12, and all staff are CPR and First Aid certified.

FAQ’s:Q: How do I sign my child up?A:To find out if your child’s school has openings, or to get on the waiting list,  contact  the CARD office at 895-4711.   Many  schools have  little or no waiting lists; however, CARD recommends you put your child on the waiting list when they are 2 years old to help ensure you will have a spot when they enter school. 

Q: Do I have to put my child on the waiting list each year?A: No.  Once you put your child on the waiting list, they stay on until they are offered a spot in the program.  Please make sure to contact us to update your phone number if it changes.

Lifeguards WantedCARD will  be  accepting  applications  for  Lifeguard/Swim  Instructors. Make  sure  to check the CARD Website for deadlines! Applications and job descriptions are available at the CARD office and online at www.chicorec.com. All applicants must have CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Title 22, and WSI certificates to be considered for the position. Applicants enrolled in the appropriate courses will also be considered pending completion of the classes.  

Chico AquaJets Swim Team A  year-round  competitive  swim  team  for  children  ages  5  and  up.  The  AquaJets encourage, enhance and provide a competitive swimming experience  for  the entire spectrum of  swimmers  from  the beginner  to  the more experienced.  It also offers a highly  rewarding and FUN group  experience  in  the  sport  of  swimming.  Swimmers can join at any time throughout the year. For practice times, locations and to register, please call 518-7946. Cost is $65/month for one swimmer, a family discount is offered to each additional swimmer.  For more information about the AquaJets, please visit their website at www.chicoaquajets.org.

Fitness for Parkinson’s PatientsDon’t be afraid  to move!   We  invite you to  join a group class  for  individuals  living with Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, or other movement disorders.  Strength, flexibility,  balance,  and  coordination  exercises  designed  to  keep  you  moving  are presented in a fun and supportive atmosphere.  Most of the class is done seated and includes graceful movement drawn from yoga and dance to ease stiffness and improve mobility.  Where appropriate, we will progress to movement strategies and standing exercises done with or without support to further address balance, hip flexibility, and leg strength.  9:30 class is slightly more challenging. Instructor: Adrienne Wrightson. CARD Community Center, Room 3.  No class 11/26.

Qi Gong Tai Ji WorkshopQi Gong, a Chinese form of mindful breathing, is the achievement through practice of  the  skills  of  breathing  and  the  cultivation  of Qi,  or  internal,  functional  energy. The word Qi  in Chinese also means breath. It  is  through breathing that relaxation is  achieved.  Tai  Ji  Quan  utilizes  a  series  of  slow  movements  through  which  the practitioner  becomes  balanced,  flexible  and more  responsive  while  less  reactive  to external  stimuli. Qi Gong and Tai  Ji  represent  a  Yin/Yang polarity:  stillness within which  there  is  internal movement,  and movement within which  there  is  a  goal  of stillness. This class offers an experiential  introduction to these two arts. Instructor: Higgy Lerner, L.Ac.  PV Rec Center, Multi-Purpose Room.

Dance Classes at KineticsKinetics dance studio offers a wide variety of dance classes for all ages. Look through the descriptions below and choose the class that would be perfect for you or your child. All classes are monthly with new sessions starting at the beginning of each month. Dancewear and shoes are available for purchase at  the studio. Kinetics Academy of Dance, 627 Broadway.  All fees are due monthly. 

Baby BalletThree little kittens lost their mittens and they danced away to find them! What if we sprinkled fairy dust on our toes and flew to Fairyland? Tutus, feathers, fairy wands, stories, and tons of props make these dance classes  fun and engaging!  Black leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes are required and can be purchased at Kinetics.  

Beginning BalletCalling all Princesses! Experience the joy of dance in this beginning ballet class. Skip like a princess, walk like a queen, and leap like a unicorn! Bring your imagination to this fun ballet class. Classical ballet is taught with a creative twist! Black leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes are required and can be purchased at Kinetics. 

Movement and SoundDo you have a high energy mover? We’ve got just the class. This dance class is for kids who love to dance, but who may not appreciate tutus and tights. Each themed class has lots of high energy dances. We’ll travel to the swamp, squish in the mud, and hide like alligators, or perhaps we’ll take a trip to the circus, complete with silly clowns. We use lots of costumes, stories, props and instruments to have a rollicking good time!  Students should wear a white shirt and black shorts or sweatpants.

Hip HopEdgy and upbeat! This trendy street style of dance is done to contemporary music, but don’t worry, all movements and music are completely “clean”! 

Tap n TumbleLearn the basics of tap with a dose of tumbling for good measure! This class covers the fundamentals of tap, along with musicality, rhythm games, tumbling, and an obstacle course. Lots of  fun for girls and boys. Please wear a black leotard, pink tights, and black tap shoes for girls. Boys should wear a white top, black bottoms, and black tap shoes. Dancewear and shoes are available for purchase at Kinetics Academy of Dance.

Ballet FitnessBallet with  a  twist!  This  class  includes  a  traditional  ballet  barre,  and  some  center work, but adds the extra fitness component of a “floor barre”, or ballet specific core toning exercises. This is a beautiful way to increase your strength and fitness level.

Music & Drama

Chico Community BandPick up your  instrument, dust  it off and get  ready  to play! There are no auditions for  this  band,  just  sign  up  and  come  on  down  to  Tuesday  night  rehearsals.  The Chico  Community  Band,  a  wind  and  percussion  ensemble  with  approximately  40 participants,  is  open  to  musicians  ranging  from  teens  to  seniors.  Formed  before World War  II,  the Band continues  to practice a  repertoire of marches,  show  tunes, and  innovative  pieces  by  current  composers  that  it  performs  for  local  audiences. Performances  include Memorial Day, 4th of  July, and Veterans Day celebrations, as well  as  a  Friday Night  Concert  in  the  Park,  a  spring  and winter  concert.  Call  Bob Eicher  at  342-6873  for  additional  information.  Performance  schedule  available  at www.chicorec.com. Chico Junior High School, Band Room 503.

Fencing Fencing is a great sport that will allow you to get physically fit while having a great time. Kids especially excel in this sport where they may have not in others. If they like to play video games, this knowledge will assist them in their ability to learn fencing. Please wear  a  t-shirt,  sweat  pants  and  tennis  shoes.  If  your  child  is  younger  than the class stated age, please contact coach to see if your child can be admitted to the class. Classes held at My Fencing Center are all electric fencing. Equipment will be provided for one month to NEW students.  All students must purchase a non-competitive USFA membership for $5.00 which is good for the fencing year (8/1-7/31). NEW Junior Coach Program (9th-12th grade)Do you know a young adult looking for a valuable youth sports coaching experience? This  voluntary  experience partners  Junior Coaches  in  the 9th-12th grade with our CARD  coaching  staff.  Program  components  include  a  parent  meeting,  interview, training  and  a minimum  commitment  of  at  least  one  entire  youth  sports  season (Commitment during season includes at least one practice a week and one game a week. Fall & Winter Little Hoopsters Basketball Instructional League (K-2nd)This  instructional  program  is  open  to  all  youth  in  K-2  grade.    Coaches  will  work with players the first 2-3 weeks to introduce the sport of basketball using basic skill techniques and formations.  The last 2-3 weeks there will be 20 minute practices and 40 minute formal games each day. Fundamentals and simple game strategy will be taught throughout the entire program.  Show up the first day and be ready to play! You will not be contacted by a coach for this program. Program will be held at Community Park “Aaron Ray Clark Memorial” Field House. General youth sports jersey is optional, but highly recommended (can be purchased at the CARD Office for $13).

SPRING Track and Field Ft. Competitive and Recreation options in most leagues to ensure better league quality:CARD is being proactive in attempting to make sure more teams are matched up with teams of similar quality.   In popular leagues, there are Recreation and Competitive options on each night of play. 

League information, registration dates and rule packets:All  league  information will  be  posted  on  our website www.chicorec.com  and www.Teamsideline.com/chico  a minimum of  2 weeks  prior  to  the  registration  deadline. CARD makes  every  effort  to  keep  dates  similar  from  year  to  year.  However, minor changes are possible.

Each league has a set number of spaces available for teams.Those numbers are determined by field or facility availability, night of play and ability level. 

All nights and locations listed are subject to change at the discretion of the sports department.

Italian FestivalFor  33  years,  the  Eldorado  has  brought  the  sights,  sounds  and  flavors  of  Italy  to downtown Reno during the Eldorado Great Italian Festival. The festival is a celebration of Italian culture and traditions. Besides great food, it also features a sauce cook-off, grape stomping contest, bocce ball tournament, kid’s gelato eating contest, wine walk, Italian Mecato and Farmer’s Market, and two stages with free live entertainment.  Trip includes overnight accommodations at the Silver Legacy, local casino stops, 2 days at the festival and round-trip motor coach transportation.

Cancellation PolicyIn  the event CARD needs  to cancel a class or program due  to  low enrollment, inclement weather, or any other unforeseen circumstance, you will receive a full refund  of  the  registration  fee.   We understand  that unexpected  circumstances may also arise resulting in a need for you to withdraw from a class or program.  If  so, please notify us prior  to  the first day of  the class, and you will  receive a full  refund.   Unfortunately,  due  to  the nature of  some of our programs,  there are  some  exceptions.    Please  refer  to  the  program  for  additional  information and exceptions.   Requests  for  refunds or  transfers may be made  in person, by email or by phone. Your receipt, cancelled check or proof of identification may be required.  Refund checks will be processed within fifteen (15) business days.

I for myself and said minor’s personal representative, assigns, heirs, and next of kin, hereby waive, release and discharge any and all claims for damages for personal injury, death or property damage which I and/or said minor may have, or which may hereafter accrue, as a result of partici-pation in said Activity. I fully understand that the Activity involves unknown risks and dangers and I fully accept all such rights and responsibilities for losses, costs and damages incurred as a result of his/her participation in the Activity. This release is intended to release and discharge in advance the Chico Area Recreation and Park District (its directors, officers, employees, volunteers, and agents) from any and all liability arising out of or connected in any way with said minor’s participation in said Activity, even though that liability may arise out of negligence or carelessness on the part of the persons or entities mentioned above. It is understood that this Activity involves an element of risk and danger of accidents, and knowing those risks I hereby assume those risks. It is further agreed that this Waiver, Release and Assumption of Risk is to be binding on all heirs and assigns. I hereby agree to indemnify and hold the persons and entities mentioned above free and harmless from any loss, liability, damage, cost or expense which they may incur as a result of the death or injury or property damage that said minor may sustain while participating in said Activity. I agree that if any portion of this Agreement, Waiver, and Release is held to be invalid, the balance shall remain in full force and effect. I HAVE CAREFULLY READ THIS AGREEMENT, WAIVER AND RELEASE AND FULLY UNDERSTAND ITS CONTENTS. I AM AWARE THAT THIS IS A RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND CONTRACT BETWEEN MYSELF AND THE CHICO AREA RECREATION AND PARK DIS-TRICT AND I SIGN IT OF MY FREE WILL ON BEHALF OF MYSELF AND MY MINOR CHILD.
