As a new year rolls in, we have exciting things to bring to Roanokers including a completely revised Play Magazine. In past years, we’ve used our magazine to inform our citizens about all of our outstanding programs, activities and events. Most of these listings came with a fee, but I recently had a meeting with our Active-ity Director, Active Andy, and he reminded me that we have several wonderful

opportunities in our city that are absolutely free. With that being said, this revised format will now bring you a bigger focus on family-friendly, active-living activities that won’t lighten your wallet.

For starters, check out the story on our lesser traveled Tinker Creek Greenway on page 7, which also happens to be the host greenway for our Off the Rails Triathlon. Then, flip a few more pages to read about our brand new disc golf course at Highland Park.

With all that’s going on in our parks and on our greenways, these are exciting times for Roanoke. We encourage you and your family to take advantage of these free amenities to jumpstart your way to a healthy and happy new year!

As the host greenway section for the Off the Rails Triathlon (OTR), the Tinker Creek Greenway is a secluded section of paved pathway that parallels the City of Roanoke and Vinton. Whether you’re looking to train for the OTR or just seeking a peaceful stroll, this is one section that is a “must do” in Roanoke.

To locate and start your venture on the Tinker, find your way to the center of Fallon Park and travel towards the rear of the park where you will be promptly greeted by Tinker Creek. The creek flows north to south parallel to the greenway, as if escorting you to your destination. The water undergoes multiple transformations as you travel. Tinker Creek begins as a beautiful shade of blue and slowly becomes naked and transparent. You can easily make out the rocks that line the bottom of the creek, as well as any marine life living below. That transparency morphs into a green tint as the shade of the trees toys with the color palette of the greenway. Finally, Tinker Creek opens up and merges with the Roanoke River, returning to its original shade of blue.

The greenway itself is accessible to all skill levels. The path is well-paved and smooth, and there are hardly any major elevation changes, if at all. The majority of your jaunt will be spent along a straight stretch of path that mimics the creek. This stretch of greenway is gifted with an abundance of nature, not limited to fish, birds and land mammals. If you’re lucky, you can even get up close and personal with some geese that call the creek home.

Your trek will take you underneath multiple bridges, some topped with roads and others with railroad tracks. The railroads that run through the greenway are very much active, so you may get a surprise visit from a locomotive.

The most impressive bridge is saved until last, though. This grandiose bridge takes you across the Roanoke River to another section of the Tinker Creek greenway. You get a spectacular view of the merging between the Roanoke River and Tinker Creek from this bridge, making it a true gem in Roanoke.

up, up, awayWAZUPWIDIS Running a typical 5K can be a relatively exciting venture to some, but how many people can say they’ve run with reckless abandonment through office buildings, parking garages and train yards during a race? If you’re tired of running typical road races and the same old 5K routes in Roanoke, it’s definitely time to take a look at Roanoke’s most unique race and course. Notoriously known as Roanoke’s most breathtaking race, WazUpWidis is back for a third year running and is ready to test the fortitude of anyone willing to brave the elements and course. The brainchild of Roanoke Parks and Recreation and Mountain Junkies LLC, WazUpWidis is one of the most unique races you’ll ever have the chance to run. Over the past two years, nearly 700 participants experienced the uniqueness of

this midwinter race. Simply put, the objective of WazUpWidis is to run through, up and over several of Downtown Roanoke’s landmarks, traversing surprisingly difficult elevation in three of the city’s parking garages and finishing with a breathtaking climb and descent of the Wells Fargo Tower. The course begins on a flat and linear section of the Lick Run Greenway adjacent to the train tracks in downtown Roanoke. The mellow, straight stretch quickly takes a turn for the unique as it winds through the historical train yard behind the Virginia Transportation Museum. Upon exiting the museum, runners cross the tracks twice via the famous MLK Bridge and glass walkway adjacent to Hotel Roanoke. You may be able to run, and you may be able to climb, but can you do both? If the course doesn’t get your adrenaline pumping,

maybe our sponsor will. Last year, runners had the chance to test their pace against America’s finest – the United States Marine Corps. Not only did they participate, but many of our local marines lined the race course barking out “motivation” to passing runners. The climax of this race is the literal breathtaking climb to the top of the Wells Fargo Tower. And right when you think you’ve completed this daunting race course, the descent only greets you with one final ascent up the parking garage to the 7th floor finish line. As for the unique name, it is very likely that at some point in this race you will think the words, “What’s up with this!?” However, due to the difficulty of the race – and your overall lack of oxygen – it will most likely come out as a one word gasp, thus the name WAZUPWIDIS! This year’s WazUpWidis Urban Race and Stair Climb will take place on February 7 just under the glass walkway behind the City Market Building.

FEBRUARY 7, 2014Notoriously known as Roanoke’s most breathtaking race, WazUpWidis is back for a third year running and is ready to test the fortitude of anyone willing to brave the elements and course.

If you think you have what it takes to conquer this course, go to WazUpWidis.com for registration details and further information.

HIGHLaND paRKDISC GOLF

The wait is over! Roanoke’s Highland Park is officially home to one of the region’s most challenging disc golf courses. Players will get a workout while traveling over the rolling terrain while tossing their discs between an abundance of tree-lined fairways. This challenging 9-hole course offers 3,180 feet of play with the longest hole measuring out at a substantial 600 feet. The par 30 venture is equipped with concrete tee pads and a permanent practice basket. Incidentally, Highland Park is home to the second disc golf course within the Roanoke City limits with the first located at Fishburn Park just off of Brambleton Avenue.

The Highland Park course offers a more difficult playing experience compared to Fishburn’s course that winds through the park. The Fishburn Park disc golf course is a great place for beginners to get a feel for the game, whereas the Highland

Course will test the skills of even the most advanced disc golfer. The course is a partnership with the City of Roanoke’s

Parks and Recreation department and the Highland Park Disc Golf Association (HPDGA). Jim Hosch, who is a founding member of HPDGA, worked closely with city staff to lead the charge of the construction of the course and is very aware of the benefits of his sport to local neighborhoods and community members. His overall vision to provide yet another outdoor amenity that is extremely accessible to a large population due to the proximity to downtown, most certainly has been achieved.

According to Hosch, disc golf offers players of all ages a way to get outside and stay active. “In most cases, the sport requires a lower level of physical exertion which makes it ideal for kids, adults and seniors who wish to get out and enjoy the outdoors,” he said.

The rules of disc golf are very similar to those used in regular golf. Each hole starts with a tee shot, followed by subsequent throws until each player’s disc reaches the basket. Scoring is the same as in regular golf where a stroke is counted each time the disc is thrown. The player with the fewest strokes wins.

Whether you’re looking for a competitive game or just a relaxing day at the park, Highland Park now offers those in and near the Old Southwest Neighborhood an easily accessible outdoor activity. For more information about Roanoke’s disc golf courses, visit PlayRoanoke.com and search “disc golf.”

Funding for this course was provided by the City of Roanoke’s Parks and Recreation Department in combination with HPDGA and their sponsorships from local businesses including: Play It Again Sports, River Rock Climbing Gym, Wasena Neighborhood Forum, Roanoke Outside, Backcountry Ski and Sport, Village Grill, Cups Coffee, Pops Ice Cream, Natural Foods Co-op, Jimmy Sardines, Fork in the Alley & Market, Old Southwest, Inc.
