Replacing metal with plastic can offer many advantages: •  Reduced weight •  Lower cost •  Greater flexibility Plastic components also: •  Can be easily configured for

specific applications •  Provide choices in molding •  Can outperform the metal

components they replace

Metal-to-Plastic Conversions

Success Stories

Page 16: Capabilities presentation 2013

PROBLEM An engine manufacturer needed a metal fill tube converted to plastic. In discussions with the customer, we discovered additional desires for product improvement. SOLUTION We developed a unique design addressing all the customer’s needs and added new features. New design included an extending tube and a tethered cap. The customer is now incorporating design across most of its models.

PROBLEM: An engine manufacturer needed to reduce the complexity and cost of a multi-part throttle coupling component. SOLUTION: RL Hudson designed an over-molded part that incorporates rubber and plastic. The new part met the customer’s needs and significantly reduced the cost of the component.

Rubber & Plastic Part Consolidation

Success Stories

PROBLEM: An outdoor power manufacturer asked us to develop a flexible coupling that would connect a small diesel engine to a hydraulic pump. SOLUTION: Our engineering team performed extensive FEA analyses to optimize the rubber geometry and confirm stiffness values. We also developed a special high-fatigue-life rubber compound and a robust rubber-to-metal bonding process to ensure that the couplings would provide long service life.

Complex Design Solutions

PROBLEM: A large agricultural equipment manufacturer was experiencing material degradation and vacuum collapse at high temperatures. SOLUTION: RL Hudson changed the product design to incorporate a wrapped fluorosilicone outer hose over an inner liner of silicone. We added steel rings to reinforce the hose against vacuum collapse. Our designers also modified the design so that a brass fitting is assembled after molding.
