EASTER EGG HUNT!

At Easter we will light the “new fire” and offer the Pascal Candle (the Easter Candle) on the Saturday evening Easter Vigil. The proclamation will be, “The Light of Christ!” and the response will be: “Thanks be to God.” Easter is a time to celebrate that the Light of Christ has come into the world. It is a time to invite that healing light of Christ to come into our lives.

Agnes Sanford wrote a wonderful little book on healing called The Healing Light. She was, quite possibly, the greatest teacher on Christian healing in the last hundred years. She lived from 1897 to 1982. She was the daughter of a Presbyterian missionary in China and the wife of an Episcopal priest. She told lots of stories of praying for soldiers during World War II.

This is one of her stories: One man named Sammy was a soldier she prayed for who was in traction for six months with a leg bone that would not heal. She wrote, “I explained to the suffering soldier boy that there was a healing energy in him that the doctors called ‘nature,’ that this same healing life was in the world outside of him too, and that he could receive more of it by asking for it.” ‘Who’ll I ask? Sammy wondered.’ – ‘Ask God. Because He is the one who made nature and He’s in nature and He is nature.’ – ‘But I don’t know anything about God.’ -- ‘You know there’s something outside yourself, don’t you? After all, you didn’t make this world. There’s some kind of life outside of you.’ – ‘Oh, sure. When you’re scared enough you feel like there must be something.’ – ‘Well then, ask that “Something” to come into you. Just say, ‘Whoever you are and whatever you are, come into me now and help nature in my body to mend this bone.’” Agnes went on to tell him to make a picture in his mind of the leg well and to imagine that he sees God’s healing light shining into it. So he prays that way, and the healing speeds up and before long he is able to walk again.

God’s power is real and active in this world as the “light of Christ.” Our job as Christians is simply to invite that light of Christ into our lives. It is, in the words of the prayer we say every Sunday at Holy Trinity “The Fire of God’s Love.” It is available to you, if you choose to accept it. It brings as much healing as you can receive for your body and mind, in whatever stage you are in your life on this earth. And God’s love has unlimited power to heal your spirit now and for all of eternity.

The Biblical understanding of this is that God knows who we are. God knows each of us personally, by name, from the time

before we were born until we go to heaven and meet Jesus face to face. And all the way through life, in the words of the Irish blessing, God holds us in the palm of his hand. At the same time that God knows us personally, we are only able to understand a limited amount of who God is and what God wills for our lives, but we can understand enough of God to receive the healing He has for us.

Mary Magdalene, who is the first witness of the Resurrection in the Gospel of John (John 20:1-18), certainly knew the healing power of Jesus. According to Luke 8 and Mark 16, Jesus had cast out 7 demons from Mary Magdalene. We do not know exactly what that means, but clearly her life was healed and transformed to the extent that she became a faithful disciple, even to the point of coming to the tomb that first Easter morning when it was still dark.

Mary kept the faith, even in the dark. Peter came and saw the tomb and then left. But Mary stayed, even though she could not yet see the light. So often our faith in Jesus must be like that. We believe in the power of the resurrection, even when we can’t yet see it in our lives. Our vision of life and healing is so very limited. But God honors our persistent belief in the dark, and very often God honors very persistent belief by making very personal connections with us.

In John chapter 10, Jesus as the Good Shepherd had said, “I know my own and my own know me.” And then in the Easter story in John’s Gospel we see that the resurrected Jesus knew and spoke Mary’s name at just the right moment, so that gradually she could know him for who he was and is, and ever more shall be, Jesus Christ, Risen from the dead to bring hope and healing to all who believe in him, to all who receive Him.

The point is that Jesus knows you by name and desires that his light and healing come to you. That is really the whole point of Easter. Crucifixion and death and hatred and suffering tried to snuff out the light of God’s love, but the light shined in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it!

Easter demonstrates that Jesus has the power to heal us. By the power of his cross and resurrection, he can burn up our sin and bring light to the darkness of our sadness and fear. But this can only happen if we connect ourselves with the power of His cross and resurrection in our personal lives. Romans 6:5-6 puts it simply, “If we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.”

Jesus died so that, like Mary Magdalene, we might be free from the demons in our lives that threaten to enslave us,

things like addictions, sadness, fear and anger. But for that to work you have to go to the cross with your troubles and believe, believe in the power of the resurrection, even in the dark. God showed that death and sadness and hatred and destruction do not have to be our destiny. In Christ our destiny can be forgiveness, healing, wholeness, abundant life and eternal life in Christ Jesus. Mary said that first Easter morning, “I have seen the Lord!” My prayer is that you might be able to do the same.

Alleluia, Christ is Risen! The Lord has Risen Indeed!

Easter Gym Set Up & Breakdown: Friday, March 30 & Sunday, April 1

Can you spare 30 minutes? An hour? If you have any time to give to help transform the gym into an Easter worship space, your help would be greatly appreciated! We will meet to decorate the gym on Friday, March 30 at 10:00am. Brevard County students will be in school on this day, so any parents or other adults that can spare some time to help with set up will be appreciated!

After the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter morning we will need to breakdown our Easter setup so any help is again appreciated! This usually goes very quickly, and as the saying goes, many hands make light work!

APRIL 28/29, 2018: Spring Ingathering for UNITED THANK OFFERING“Your Blessings Become Blessings for Others”United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. You are never too young or too old to count your blessings and start a daily spiritual practice. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily

blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and in Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world. To learn more, see the 2017 Grants List on display in the Narthex, or log onto http://www.episcopalchurch.org/page/united-thank-offering

What Am I Thankful For? Give THANKS for the good things that happen every day – for the little things like a good parking spot on a busy day, sunshine for your family picnic, or a birthday card from a friend. Give THANKS for the big things like recovery from serious illness, a new job, or forgiveness and reconciliation after a long dispute. It’s suggested that every time you think of something you’re thankful for, you say a thankful prayer and drop pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, or dollars in your BLUE BOX. These Blue Boxes are available in the Narthex to help you gather your contributions, but it’s suggested that you turn those coins into paper money or a check and place the donation in a UTO envelope (or a plain envelope, clearly marked “for UTO”) for the actual ingathering. This way, you can use your Blue Box for many years – and many thankful prayers. Checks may be made payable to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, with a notation that the check is for “UTO or United Thank Offering.” If you have any questions, feel free to call Judy Henderson at 321-327-3175.

Through daily prayer and tangible offerings, LIVES ARE CHANGED IN VERY REAL WAYS.
