The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus

The program for this year’s Lenten Bible Study is The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus by Adam Hamilton. It is a 6 session series using a book and accompanying DVD.

Here is a brief overview of the program: Using videos shot on location, we will visit the Jordan river where Jesus was baptized and the wilderness where he was tempted. We’ll see the ruins of ancient Capernaum, where Jesus healed the sick, and see where Jesus gave the sermon on the mount. We’ll travel across the Sea of Galilee and visit the last remaining community of Samaritans in the world. Then finally we will go to Jerusalem where Jesus spent his final days.

This particular program was chosen because it closely parallels the places that will be visited by the Holy Trinity group traveling to the Holy Land this April.

The program will be offered by our clergy during their Bible Studies, and during the Adult Bible Study at Whole Church Family Night:

• Wednesdays at 11:30am in Lewis Hall, beginning February 7 (except on Ash Wednesday, February 14)

• Wednesdays at 6:45pm in the Parish Hall (except on Ash Wednesday, February 14)

• Mondays at 11:00am in Lewis Hall, beginning February 12 (except on Presidents Day, February 19)

Books are $10, and will soon be available at the church and in the church office.

Our Bible verse for 2018 is Jeremiah 17:14: “Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.” This verse is a prayer. Jeremiah is speaking directly to God, asking for his people to be healed, repaired, restored, and rebuilt. Jeremiah is saying, Lord, make us whole and keep us whole. Make us healthy and keep us healthy. This is our prayer for Holy Trinity in 2018.

A few verses earlier, Jeremiah 17:7-8 says: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” That is a great picture of one who is healthy and whole by trusting in the Lord.

Together as a church family we trusted in the Lord in 2017. We did not face drought, but we faced many other challenges that taught us to trust in the Lord, including a major plumbing leak and, of course, the hurricane. Thanks to your generosity, we ended the year in the black for the 11th year in a row. And thanks to your generous response to the SOAP stewardship campaign, we have a balanced budget for 2018.

We are also very thankful for God’s blessings on three major new initiatives in 2017: the new website, the remodeling of the flower room and the launch of Whole Church Family Nights. Thank you to Daniel Farr our Kitchen Manager and chef, who together with a fantastic culinary team, regularly feeds around 100 people at dinner on Wednesday evenings. We clustered programming for all ages around dinner, preceded by a quietly powerful worship service. All together, the challenges, transitions and new initiatives of 2017 give us more reasons than ever to move forward in faith trusting God with our future.

What’s ahead in 2018? Many opportunities to ask the Lord to make us whole and keep us whole! Jesus said, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” Jesus then travelled around proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing disease and sickness among the people. Jesus made people healthy and gave them ways to stay healthy. We

believe this church is called to share the good news and healing power of Jesus. Here are some highlights of what we are planning in 2018:

1. Pastor Sharon Lewis will be coming February 9-11 to lead a Vestry Retreat and Preach. Hopefully she will come back in the Fall for a healing mission.

2. During Lent, we will study a program called The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus.

3. In April we will lead a trip to Israel; a group of 16 of us will literally walk where Jesus walked. Please keep this journey in your prayers. We hope that the whole church will be blessed by what we learn.

4. In March will be the dedication of the $20 million in renovations at Trinity Towers East and South. We are so thankful that our church helped make that possible.

5. Plans are underway with the leadership of Lisa Soloway and Deacon Stacey Westphal for Holy Trinity to launch a new outreach ministry in August for teens aging out of foster care.

6. Soon we will see the revitalization of our lovely historic chapel enter a very active phase. We hope that by Christmas the bell in the narthex might actually be in the new chapel bell-tower.

7. Newcomer Ministry is also set for some new energy in 2018. We want to thank the incredible Betty Shanks for her many years of fantastic work in welcoming those new to this church. And we are happy to announce that Linda Edwards is the new chair of newcomer ministry.

It’s going to be a great year of healing and salvation through Jesus as this church reaches out to the community around us with a message of wholeness and health in body, mind and spirit!

Jeremiah 17:14 says: “Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.” Please join us in this prayer in 2018.

Faithfully,

Rev. Pam and Fr. Steve

Friends of Holy Trinity in MissionThe Rev. Loren Fox, former Rector at Church of the Blessed Redeemer, Palm Bay, and his wife, Linda, both of whom some of you know, but many do not, are answering the Lord’s call to mission, to spread the Gospel of the Lord in places where it is actually forbidden. They leave two young of-age sons behind. The couple spoke about their journey at Holy Trinity at a WFCN just before Christmas. Rich and Pat Franck have agreed to be their support contact here at Holy Trinity, so this article is the first of a series to appear in the newsletter as we follow the Foxes in their ministry.

Many of us hear about mission and think that, even if feeling called to mission, most of us can’t DO mission because we work or have family obligations that simply would ‘t permit us to live in a foreign land. We think that mission has to be “going out.” But mission takes many forms, and for those of us that can’t “go”, there are many ways to support those who can and do choose to go into the mission fields. That is what Fr. Loren and Linda are asking of us here in the Diocese of Central Florida, and especially here at Holy Trinity. They are going at God’s call, but will be representing the entire Diocese. Their needs will be many, as they live and work in East Asia. Their work will be in a country where their personal security will always be at risk, and therefore, the exact location cannot be disclosed. They will not be working alone, but in partnership with others in a team effort.

The greatest need of the Foxes will be two-fold; prayer and financial support. They flew out of Orlando on Tuesday, January 23, and it will take many months for them to get integrated into their team, to learn the local cultures, and to establish working relationships with other missionaries in their area before being sent out to actually serve the local population. Please pray for Loren and Linda as they make this journey, that may be safe, and successful in spreading the word of God, as we are all challenged to do in our own ways. If you want to follow their journey, or are moved to provide financial support, and all of their support will be paid only by donation, you may do so at www.engagingtheadventure.org. They still need about $300 in monthly pledges to complete their budget needs. Please contact Rich or Pat Franck if you have questions. 321-242-3224.

COME SEE OUR NEW DREAM SPACE!

You are cordially invited to come see our newly renovated flower work room. Saturday evening, February 10 and Sunday morning, February 11, following all services, the flower work room will be open for you to see this wonderful new space.

Its official name is “Feed Thy Soul” Flower Room. We are so proud of it! The renovations have been made possible, primarily through the generosity of an anonymous benefactor, and the Holy Trinity Vestry. So many people have worked very hard to turn this space into a functional work area. We look forward to seeing you! Members of our team will be present. Stop by to say, “Hello!”

The Women’s RetreatMarch 9 - 11, 2018

Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center, Oveido, FL

REGISTRATION WILL BEGIN ON FEBRUARY 1

Theme: “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

In a world that seems to grow continually busier, the idea being still can seem like an impossible task. Maybe despite the endless to-do list we can find ways, in our hearts and souls to do just that.

During our time together we will explore physical and spiritual stillness and how to find our own sense of calm, to which God calls us. Our theme sessions and workshops will give us tools to find our inner calm in the midst of a busy world.

Along with the workshops, there will be times of fellowship and worship with music led by Clare Toy.

Be still...

...and know that I am God.

We will recognize newcomers to Holy Trinity during all church services on the weekend of February 24 & 25. Join us as we take the time

Saturday & Sunday,February 24 & 25

to welcome those newcomers who have added so much to the life of Holy Trinity. The entire congregation is invited to join us that Sunday between the 9:00 and 11:15am services for a reception in our newcomers’ honor in the Parish Hall. Please join us!

Our Featured Speaker: The Rev. Beth Pessah: Priest, wife, mother and lover of story telling. Beth lives in Ormond Beach with her husband (The Rev. Steve Pessah) and their two sons.
